6 Mindfulness Fundamentals Mindfulness can be defined as focused, relaxed attention and is a natural ability that can be strengthened through practice. Why mindfulness? We live in a fast-paced, media-driven society that is placing an unprecedented amount of stress upon our children. This type of toxic stress impairs attention, emotion and mood regulation, sleep, and learning readiness. Prolonged exposure to this stress has lifelong impacts on mental and physical health. Mindfulness offers tools to transform our habitual responses. Regular practice of mindfulness has been shown to: Improve emotional regulation and self-acceptance Enhance focus and attention Improve standardized test scores and working memory Increase executive function Improve social skills Improve mental health Alleviate depressive symptoms Session 1 helps students understand how brain functions assist in learning to make choices. They will also learn the core breath-based practice. Session 2 supports the core concepts and expands the toolkit for living a more mindful life. Both sessions are designed for student who have never taken mindfulness or have taken several classes. Learning mindfulness takes continuous practice and ongoing guided instruction to strengthen the understanding and implementation of the practices.
