Students will learn abut the varius methds fr starting up, managing and financing a new venture. Students will get a chance t evaluate real wrld business plans and vides f entrepreneurs. Learning Outcmes: By the end f the curse, student shuld be able t: 1. Examine the steps required, the supprt available, and the tactics cmmnly emplyed by entrepreneurs starting a business. 2. Critically evaluate business plans in terms f feasibility, investment ptential, risk, and cmpleteness. Materials: All f the required materials fr this curse may be purchased at the De Anza Bkstre. Technlgy: The fllwing technlgy is required in rder t access the curse materials. Yu will need a cmputer (n Windws-Minimum f PII 300 mhz; n Mac-G3 350 mhz) with bradband access) t the Internet. Mdem users will nt be able t view the streaming vides. If yu can cme t campus weekly, yu are welcme t use the Library West Cmputer Lab t watch the vides. It is lcated in the basement f the Learning Center West building. Yu need t have a current brwser in rder t view the web-based curse materials (Firefx is recmmended). Yu als need t allw ckies, Java, and pp-ups. Yu will need t dwnlad and install the free Real Player media player in rder t view / listen t the curse vides. Sme f the streaming vides will als be made available in the frmat fr the Windws Media Player, but yu must use the Real Player if yu are n a Macintsh r if yu need clse captined files. Requirements: Fr a few f the vides frm PBS, yu will use a Java clipstream r Windws Media Player. Again, the Java clipstream ptin wrks well and is recmmended fr Macintsh users. Yu will need t have Java installed n yur cmputer, and ensure that yur brwser allws it. Yu will need t dwnlad Flash t view the presentatins in their graphical frmat. (Mst peple already have this installed.) Yu will als need Micrsft Wrd, OpenOffice, r the Wrd Viewer t view the business plans and sme ther Wrd dcuments. Yu will als need a persnal address t receive curse annuncements. As sn as yu lg int Catalyst accunt, yu shuld receive an welcme message frm the instructr. Yu shuld read the assigned text chapter, and then review the assciated Flash presentatin. (A text versin is als prvided if yu cannt use Flash r want t print ut ntes.) Games: Each week there is sme type f nline game r puzzle available t test yur cmprehensin f the lessns. The games are prvided t help yu determine hw well yu understand the material, and t help yu prepare fr the midterm and final examinatins. Yu may use these games as many times as yu like and yur scre is nt recrded in my grade bk. Hwever, yu will receive 2 pints fr trying the game and submitting yur initial scre where the quiz is lcated befre the psted deadline that week. Discussin Frums: Each week yu will als be expected t cntribute t yur chice f class discussins. This discussin frum allws yu t demnstrate yur understanding f curse cncepts and learn frm the experiences f yur classmates. The assignments are varied,

3 they invlve tasks such as web research, vide case studies, a team prblem, r even a rle play exercise. Yur grades in the discussin frum will be evaluated accrding t the Discussin Rubric prvided in the table belw. (Nte that students will nt get credit fr ding mre than ne tpic each week. All directins have been fllwed. Adds significant, new, and substantiated ideas t the chsen discussin tpic and demnstrates that the discussin has been reviewed prir t psting. Psts fully in the discussin by the deadline. Writing is clear and easy t read. Psts are written in a prfessinal manner with prper grammar and punctuatin. All questins psed in the assignment are fully answered but explanatins may be brief r sme f the directins missed. Psts are generally clear but may cntain ccasinal grammatical errrs r typs. Sme f the assigned questins are skipped r ignred. Examinatins: There will be 2 exams t test yu n the material yu have learned. The questins will cntain similar cntent t issues explred in the practice quizzes and games, readings, and discussin assignments. These tests will be timed, s yu will need t be cmpetent in curse cncepts t cmplete them. Yu will nt have the time t lk up many answers in the textbk. Midterm (40 pints) cvers textbk chapters 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,10,11, and 12. It is due by Friday 5/13 by midnight Pacific Standard Time. Final Exam (40 pints) cvers textbk chapters 2, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20. Students must cmplete the final by Tuesday 6/21 by midnight PST. Optinal Extra Credit Final Essay (8 Pints) The student has the ptin f answering a final exam essay questin fr up t 8 pints f extra credit. Students will have ne hur t cmpse their answer t the essay questin. This extra credit is als due by Tuesday 6/21, althugh it is timed separately t allw yu t take a break. Schedule yur wrk t cmplete tasks n time. Fr instance, games cmpleted n time are wrth 2 pints. Games cmpleted late are still helpful fr review, but d nt earn yu any pints. the instructr when yu dn't understand the answer t ne f the practice questins, r pst a questin in the "Student Café" and ask anther student t help.

5 Try t be ne f the first few students t answer the discussin grup tpic, s that yu dn't have the pressure f reading 30 psts and cming up with smething "new". If yu dn't receive 9 r 10 pints n the discussin grup, g back t that earlier week's psting t see if yur instructr psted a respnse.
