2 Wednesday, Nov 21 Early Release - 11:25 Nov 22nd and Nov 23rd - Thanksgiving Break SUPPORT OFFERED TO MARCUS STUDENTS! WHAT S SAMMY S PLACE? It is a once weekly opportunity for one on one and small group tutoring offered to Marcus students by the Port Orchard Methodist Church located in downtown Port Orchard. It meets EVERY WEDNESDAY from after school until 5pm. Students take Bus #27 from here to the church, and parents can pick them up at the church. The afternoon starts with 30 minutes of healthy snacks and chill time to play board games, watch a movie, or talk and listen to music. Then, tutors begin helping our students with any type of help they need. This can be from working on math facts not yet learned, to practicing for a big test, to playing a game that enriches specific vocabulary even just reading with an adult for a while, or practicing conversation if one is a new English Learner. ALL THIS helps a student participate and work better in school, and we are grateful for the volunteers who have done this program with Cedar Heights up until this year. At Marcus, an elective support class is offered to all our students not performing at grade level. In addition, these students also still get a fun elective of their own choice. THEN, we also have 7 th Hour Study Hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45-3:45pm where math and ELA teachers are present to help students individually. NOW, we have Sammy s Place offered to our students for even more one on one tutoring opportunities. Call the School Counseling Office (360) , or your student s counselor for more information. 3 Attendance and Early Dismissal Recent changes Early Dismissal Best practice is to send your student with a note the morning of the day you need to pick your student up. Please designate the time of pick up and if someone else will be picking them up other than yourself. Your student will be issued an Early Dismissal Pass and be released at the appointed time. During school hours (not immediately before or after school) you may enter the staff parking lot and meet your student in the Main Office where you will sign your student out. If a note has not been sent with your student in the morning you will need to come into the Main Office and request your student s release. We do not accept phone calls for early release. Late Arrivals Students arriving after school starts are considered tardy. Tardies can be excused by a phone call, note or to the attendance office and need to be done within 24 hours. After four unexcused tardies to school students will receive consequences. Students arriving more than 15 minutes late are considered truant, this late arrival if not excused within 24 hours they will receive a consequence. Absences If a child is kept home due to illness, the attendance office should be notified as soon as possible. You may contact our attendance office directly by calling (360) , ing meddles@skschools.org or use the Attendance Application on your Skyward account to report your student s absence. School personnel will try to contact parents if this has not been done. 4 Be Present at School Nationally, an estimated 6.8 students are at risk academically each year because they are chronically absent - missing 10 percent or more school days due to absence for any reason - excused, unexcused and suspensions. A great online resource is for best practices, resources and highlight ways to identify warning signs of chronic absenteeism. Currently, we are at the midterm point of the semester, so there have been 45 days of school. (Absences of 5 days, then, become 10% absenteeism.) That is 275 minutes missed of math instruction, for example. It is difficult to make up those minutes of learning. Remember that we have 7 th Hour Study Hall every Tuesday and Thursday after school with math and language arts teachers. If your student is showing signs of chronic absenteeism five days absent, and home solutions are not working, please feel free to ask for assistance from your student s school counselor: Zack Fogel (A-K) (360) fogel@skschools.org Karen Little (L-Z) (360) little@skschools.org Students this age become very aware that they are falling behind when absent, so absences may also begin stress or anxiety situations needlessly. If students have medical appointments during the school day, definitely plan for a partial day of absence, and return to school as soon as possible. Avoid appointments during challenging classes and encourage your student to get their make-up work from a fellow classmate, by to the teacher, or by referencing the teacher s online procedures for make-up work. If your student needs to have a Pre-Planned Absence, then notify the Attendance Office at (360) or by letter two weeks in advance of the absence, and teachers can try their best to give make-up work. If your student has two or more consecutive days absent, then you may call the Main Office at (360) to gather make up work for you to pick up at the office within 24 hours. But, still --- Be present to learn!

6 MWMS 6th Grade Intramural Soccer Intramural soccer is offered to all 6th grade girls and is a non-cut sport. This is a wonderful way to learn basic skills of the game and to build excellent teamwork skills. In order to participate each player needs the following completed before the first practice on Tuesday November 13th. Athletic packet - packets can be picked up and turned in to the downstairs office Yellow emergency card - picked up in downstairs office and turned into the coach ASB fee paid - At the student store, cost is $30 Cleats, shin guards, athletic clothes Practices will be held 3 days a week; every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3pm- 4pm on the soccer field. If we have a game the day of practice then we will not have practice. Practice schedule and game schedule are attached. Remember the season goes for 5 weeks, and it will rain and it will be cold. Dress appropriately. We want this season to be about fun and learning, not about coughs and runny noses! 7 Story Time for 7th Grade We are very excited to have Val Kimball, the Indian Education Liason for our School District visit Marcus Whitman November 8 and 9. She will be visiting 7th Grade classrooms sharing stories from her tribe s oral tradition. BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND Two Mile Tuesdays will start November 6 th, from 3:00-4:00 PM. A Club form/permission slip must be completed and turned in before participation. Students will meet in Room 106 ready to go. Wear weather appropriate clothing and walking/running shoes. Some reflective vests are available to wear, though a student is welcome to bring his/her own if he/she has one. Students will sign in each time, check the course/distance and when he/she returns from walk/run. The course may vary some, though does include the fields around school, the streets around Orchard Heights Elementary School, and/or around Village Greens Golf Course. Rules of the Road are expected to be followed. There are no fees. Invite a peer to join you for an hour of conversation and cardio where you set the pace.

9 U3 CLUB U3 is a club for students who are interested in learning how to complete fun and challenging puzzles. We will discover and learn new games, puzzles, and thinking skills. We will be teaching each other strategies as we develop our problem solving in a fun way. Our first challenge is to teach all members how to master a Rubik Cube. If your child is interested, we meet every Monday after school from 3-4pm in portable 2 with Urushidani Sensei. You child may bring their puzzles and games to school, but they must keep them in their lockers until club time. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is a college-preparatory program designed to increase school wide learning and performance. The primary goal of the AVID program is to provide current academic success and develop future college-readiness skills for participants. We need volunteers who can commit to coming every Tuesday and/ or Thursday from 9:20 to 11:15. You would be working with small groups to guide questioning, but not give away the answers. If you are willing to work more days, we could probably put you to work in the AVID classroom. There are usually 2 or 3 dances/after school activities during the school year. Once they are scheduled, I send an asking for Chaperones for these events.
