NOTE: A graphing calculator is optional, but highly recommended. A scientific calculator is required. Prerequisites/Co-requisites: Prerequisites: C or higher in MAC 1105 or appropriate placement score Co-requisites: None Textbook & Other Course Materials: This is an ONLINE course. All homework and quizzes will be completed through Pearson s My Math Lab, and your enrollment will happen through the Canvas activities. You will be required to purchase the license, but the license includes an electronic version of the text book. You will not need a class code. Use your Lakehawk address when registering for the course. If you have not activated your Lakehawk account, go to the LSSC homepage and follow the instructions. Calculus with Applications: Brief Version, Lial, 10th edition, Pearson Education, 2012 (An etext is available through MyLab and Mastering, therefore a print version of the text is optional for this course.) Technology Requirements: Canvas is a required component of this course. Students unfamiliar with Canvas are expected to complete the Student Orientation course located in Canvas within the first week of classes. After logging into Blackboard and accessing this course, you will be asked to complete a course orientation. During this orientation you will be prompted to register for the MyMathLab (MML) portion of this course to create a link to your coursework. You will need an access code as stated above (purchased online through the publisher s site or from the LSSC bookstore). Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the registration process. Once registered, you need only login to Canvas to access your coursework. Since you are linking your MML component through your Canvas course, you do NOT need a MML course ID. A TI 84 Calculator will be available to you for tests, provided by the Learning Center. You may wish to practice with this calculator as there are functions specific to this course. TI-89 or TI-92 are prohibited. If you have any question about other calculators, please be sure to contact me before the first test. The online portion of this course s content may be accessed from any computer with an internet connection (a high speed connection is best). Please see the LSSC Lakehawk Page for information on how to obtain Microsoft Office 365 as an LSSC student.

3 Student Learning Outcomes: The following outcomes will be assessed in this course. An outcome is defined as something students take with them beyond this course. After successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrates knowledge of limits. 2. Demonstrates knowledge of derivatives. 3. Demonstrates knowledge of derivative applications. Course Objectives: Objectives are defined as what the course will do and/or what the students will do as part of the course. To prepare the student for mathematical applications in business and the social sciences; this will require an understanding of the calculus used for analysis. Academic Integrity: The successful functioning of the academic community demands honesty, which is the basis of respect for both ideas and persons. In the academic community, there is an ongoing assumption of academic integrity at all levels. There is the expectation that work will be independently thoughtful and responsible as to its sources of information and inspiration. Honesty is an appropriate consideration in other ways as well, including but not limited to the responsible use of library resources, responsible conduct in examinations, and the responsible use of the Internet. Privacy Policy (FERPA): The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. 1232g; 34 CFR Part99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of a student s education records. In order for your information to be released, a form must be signed and in your records located in the Admissions/Registrar s Office. Zero-Tolerance for Violence Statement: Lake-Sumter State College has a policy of zero tolerance for violence as stated in College Board Rule Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with Board Rule Attendance/Withdrawal Policies: Institutional Information: Once the Add/Drop period passes, students deciding to discontinue class attendance and/or online participation have the responsibility for formal withdrawal by the withdrawal deadline. Withdrawal Deadline: To successfully withdraw from this course, you must do so by Monday, March 25 th by 11:59 PM.

4 Instructor Policies: All answers must be in simplified form. For example, all fractions must be reduced. Other specifications will be made in lecture notes in Blackboard. You are expected to conduct yourself in a professional manner during any on-site visits, during virtual interactions with the professor and/or your classmates, and when posting to the discussion board. If you are late for your scheduled test appointment, you may not be allowed to take the test. In this event you will receive a zero for the test unless you are able to schedule a new appointment within the testing time period. Cheating Policy: While it is encouraged to perform practice and homework collaboratively, tests, quizzes and the final are expected to be performed independently. If you are caught violating this expectation, it will be considered cheating. Forms of cheating can include, but are not limited to: Having unauthorized notes/formulas during a test Use of any electronic during a test Soliciting help during a test Taking a test in an unauthorized setting, other than the proctored setting Violations will be handled as such: First violation will result in a zero on the assignment, no warning may be given Second violation with result in a removal from the course with a grade of F Your Expectations of Me: I will treat you with courtesy and respect. You will display high standards of academic honesty and integrity. Late Work/Extensions: Homework can be continued after the due date with a 5% per day penalty. Quizzes, tests and practice tests dates will not be extended.

5 Grading Information: Grading Scale: % A 80-89% B 70-79% C 60-69% D 59% and below F Methods of Evaluation: Tests: Dates for the tests and final will be pre-announced. It is your responsibility to make an appointment in the Learning Center to take your proctored tests. Early registration is suggested as to ensure a convenient time for you. Make-up tests will not be allowed You have a minimum 3 day window to take each test at a preset time you choose. Therefore, make up tests will not be permitted without proper documentation. If you have sufficient documentation and need to make up a test, you will have 1 week from the end of that test window to make up the test. You will need instructor approval before making up a test. See course schedule for test weeks. Online homework and quizzes: A portion of your grade is based on completing assigned online homework, quizzes, and video lectures. You must complete all online work at the My Math Lab website by the specified due date. All assigned online homework problems can be completed an unlimited number of times, but each problem must be completed correctly at least once to receive full credit. You will have 2 attempts per online quiz, the highest of which will be counted in your quiz average. The lowest 2 online quiz grades will be dropped prior to calculating your quiz average. You may not attempt a quiz until the related homework is complete with at least 70% correct. The due dates are set and there will be no extensions, however you can continue homework with a 5% per day penalty. They will be optional, but are highly recommended for understanding topics. Online homework through My Math Lab is assigned and due throughout the semester on a weekly basis. This will be the only bonus for test grade purposes. Final Exam The final exam is a comprehensive, proctored paper exam in the Learning Center.
