Course Outline Experimental techniques in aerodynamics: Pressure, temperature and velocity measurement techniques. Steady and unsteady pressure measurements and various types of pressure probes and transducers, errors in pressure measurements. Measurement of temperature using thermocouples, resistance thermometers, temperature sensitive paints and liquid crystals. Measurement of velocity using hotwire anemometry. Calibration of single and two wire probes. Velocity measurement using Laser Doppler Velocimetry and Particle Image Velocimetry Other measurement techniques

Course Outline 1. Introduction, Data acquisition 2 weeks 2. Pressure measurements 2 week 3. Temperature measurements 2 weeks 4. Velocity measurements a) Hot-wire Anemometry 2 weeks b) Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) 2 weeks c) Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) 3 weeks 5. Other measurement techniques 1 week

Grading HWs/Labs/Reports/ 20% Project Reports/Presentations/Poster 30% Attendance 10% 1 Midterm (27 November 2012@ 13:40) 20% (a closed book and closed notes exam) Final 20%

Lab Works: Each group will be responsible of one Laboratory Equipments which will come in November 2012 from TecQuipment. You will prepare an experimental laboratory documents for the equipments and prepare a laboratory work for undergraduate students. The list of the equipments will be given to you by the assistant. 1 st internal report is due 23 October You will also have a 1 st presentation on your project on 23 October 2012 in the class. 2 nd internal report should also include details about the course which will be given by TecQuipment in November 2012 (you are obliged to attend these courses during a week which will be specified by TecQuipment). The 2 nd report will be due to 30 November You should take to the video the course given about the lab equipments that you are responsible. Final report and the experimental laboratory documents for undergraduate students is due to 25 December A poster of the equipments should be prepared and will be positioned at the back side of the Laboratory equipment until the end of the class. Project presentations will be performed on 25 December All reports, presentations, videos should be given also in a DVD. Final report should have a fixed format white color book cover (no spiral or any other format will be accepted)

Projects: -Boeing VTOL UAV Student Design and Development Project -Amphibious UAV design and development which will takeoff and land to seaside with a 1kg of payload. -Max. 500 kw Wind Turbine Aerodynamic Design for 10m/s inflow velocity. Its small scale will be manufactured and tested at the back of the 1mx1m wind tunnel - SD7003 and NACA 0012 airfoil aerodynamic force measurements in 1mx1m wind tunnel (steady and unsteady measurements), comparison with CFD results. - Choose 2 different wind turbine blade airfoils for 500 kw wind turbine and do aerodynamic force measurements in 1mx1m wind tunnel (steady and unsteady measurements), comparison with CFD results. - Comparison of flow around a square and cylinder at different velocities and angle of attacks in 1m x 1m wind tunnel, comparison with CFD results. -Solar Tracking System Design Time schedule of Lab Works is also applicable for Projects.

Grading and course policy: There will be only one make-up exam. It will be after the finals and it will cover everything. Try not to miss the exams! If you miss midterm exam, final exam and Project Presentation you need to contact me within three days after the exam. You need a valid excuse (a medical certificate) for you to qualify for a make-up. Attendance is recommended. NA grade will be given in one of the following circumstances: Students who do not attend 70% of the classes Students who do not give studies and reports Students who do not attend Project Presentation, Mid Term 1 and its make-ups. Students who have NA degree are not eligible for make-up examination of final exam at the end of the semester/year. Study assignments are to be submitted on due date. Late submissions will not be accepted. Your work must be original. Duplications from past years or cheating will result in a 0 for your project grade. The same is true for study assignments. Teamwork is an integral part of establishing successful engineering projects. Therefore students are encouraged to form groups of 5 students. The team is expected to work together and act as a team.
