You will discover a range of highlights and learning achievements from across our classrooms in the newsletter items that follow. School Culture the importance of our student voice Over the past few weeks, since arriving at Tanduringie, I have been regularly asking our students about our school motto, Good. Better. Best. and what it means to them. In particular, I wanted to know what Good. Better. Best. actually looks like in our classrooms, our playgrounds, or even when we are away from school? What would we expect our students to be doing and saying? It s like riding a horse... if you fall off you get right back on. I can try and improve my work. We have to be good at something before we can get better. November Wed 8th Fri 10th Camp Fri 17th Swimming Carnival I believe these statements accurately capture our student voice and convey an important message about the positive learning culture that is embedded at our school. When I hear our students talking about Good. Better. Best. in this way it clearly reflects their intrinsic motivation to improve and aspire to do things better. The key take-away message I hear in our student voice is this: It s great to be good at something, but what if I could be even better at it? For students at Tanduringie our school culture and student voice reflects our whole school belief that nothing is as important as learning. I am very proud of our students for sharing their responses so openly, and I am equally proud of our students for being honest when they really weren t sure what our motto meant to them. As a school it is our work to ensure that every student at Tanduringie can proudly state what our motto means and, more importantly, be able to clearly articulate what it means for them and their learning. Reading Our #1 Priority As a staff we are reflecting on how we teach reading across our school and this will form the basis for much of our work throughout the remainder of the year. There are many successful ways that we are already teaching reading. The purpose of this work is to ensure that our reading programs and practices continue to meet the learning needs of our students and enable every student to continue to improve their individual reading growth. For us, as educators, to instill a passion for learning within all children and to nurture their social, emotional, physical and academic development.

2 Semester 1 Report Cards At Assembly this week I spoke with our students about the importance of giving their very best effort as they complete their final assessment pieces during these busy last few weeks of term. I challenged them to find that extra gear and use their stamina to stay focused and work through until the end of term. I believe our students have risen to the challenge this week and I look forward to reading about our students successes before report cards are distributed to families on Monday 19 th June (in Week 10). Teachers have already begun to compile overall effort and achievement grades, and are working on subject area and overall behaviour comments. Parent Teacher Interviews Interviews provide a valuable opportunity to discuss your child s progress with their classroom teacher. We will shortly send home a timetable for scheduled interviews in Week 10. Please get in contact with the school if your family s allocated time is not suitable (Timetable on back page). Readers Cup Our best wishes go to the team of Eliza Lawless, Dylan Mathews, Maye Douglass, Elijah Alderton-Pink, and Charlotte Bourke as they are just days away from representing our school at Readers Cup next Wednesday 14 th June (Week 9) in Kingaroy. We are very proud of the work and time that each of these students has invested in preparing for this competition and we are excited for their participation in the tournament. Go Tanduringie!! Thank you to Mrs Mathews and our parent helpers for supporting our students to participate in this tournament. Premier s Reading Challenge For a student to successfully complete the Premier's Reading Challenge they must read or experience the number of books indicated in the table below. Experiencing a book can include classroom or at home activities such as shared reading, listening and reading along with a book, or being read to. Year level Prep Year 2 Years 3 4 Years 5 9 Number of books Read or experience 20 books 20 books 15 books The requirement for Year 5 through to Year 9 students to read 15 books rather than 20 books acknowledges that older students are likely to select longer, more complex books that may take them longer to read. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability. Please record your child s reading with their classroom teacher, and encourage your child to read throughout the upcoming school holiday break. Athletics Day Term 3 Our annual Athletics Carnival will be held at Cooyar State School on Thursday, 13 th July. Attached to this newsletter is a lunch menu. More information about the carnival will be shared before the end of term. Tuckshop Tuckshop will be happening again next Friday, 16 th June. The Term 2 menu is attached to the newsletter. Remember to attach the order form to the outside of your payment envelope. Future Dates Term 2 will conclude on Friday, 23 rd June. School resumes for Term 3 on Monday, 10 th July and concludes on Friday, 15 th September (10 weeks). Thank you for your continued support of our school. 3 Year 5/6 News with Mr Thorpe English Our students have prepared and delivered their digital, multi-modal stop-motion animations that explored a character s behaviour when faced with an ethical dilemma. Students particularly enjoyed using digital cameras and ipads to take pictures of their carefully-crafted sets, as well as using PowerPoint on their laptops to bring their production to life with images and sound. We were all super-impressed by the quality of the slide shows. Students gave each other feedback about what worked really well and how to make improvements for next time. In reading groups we ve been continuing to discuss information and narrative texts, and have linked our reading to our study of European and North American cultures in Geography. In English we are now exploring many interesting types of poetry from cinquains, odes, ballads and Haiku. We are learning to appreciate how poetry can be used to tell a story and we have enjoyed writing our own poems about nature. Mathematics I have been very impressed with our students progress with their weekly number facts challenges, and their hard work is certainly paying off. From Week 9 we will begin exploring Think Mentals and explore ways to strengthen our mental computation. The Year 5 students have been investigating angles and symmetry, including flips, slides and turns of 2D shapes. The Year 6 students have been exploring order of operations and learning that there are mathematical laws that we need to use when calculating complex problems that involve the four operations. Science Over the past few weeks we ve been investigating electrical circuits as a means of transferring and transforming electricity. In small groups this fortnight we have designed and constructed a Steady Hand tester with great results! Students are now completing their Science assessment where they are investigating how to test electrical components and identify faults in the circuit.

4 Year Prep/1 News Dear Parents, The Year 1 students have been working hard. They have just completed their assessment on 2D and 3D shapes and objects. They are now moving onto using different thinking strategies for mathematical equations. The Prep students have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes and how 3D shapes are used within towns. In English, both the Preps and Year 1 s have been looking at different types of texts, how some texts have a beginning, middle and end and how characters feel emotions too. The Prep s and Year 1 s have been really working on using their lines, finger spaces and sounding out words to work out what letters they need. They are all doing a fantastic job! Just as a quick note, on the Friday s your child has tuck shop, can you please communicate with them about if they are having both morning tea and lunch. This saves a little disappointment instead of them lining up for morning tea when they do not have it. Thank you all for your support, Karli and Mel. 5 Year 2/3/4 News Welcome to week eight! The 2/3/4 class continues to be a busy place and right now the students are working through a number of assessment items across all key learning areas. Last week, the 2/3/4 students presented their spoken presentations in the role of a character from the novel, Charlotte s Web. In the last couple of weeks of school we will revisit persuasive texts and write our own persuasive. Over the last few weeks in Geography we have been learning about some of Australia s neighbours. The students have worked in teams to complete a number of tasks about the natural and human characteristics of Rotorua (New Zealand), Yogyakarta (Indonesia), Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Vanuatu. In our Mathematics lessons last week, the year two students learnt about counting small amounts of mixed coins and notes. The year three students learnt more about place value and three digit numbers while the year fours continued to consolidate their skills adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing numbers. Thursdays are always a busy day in the 3-6 classroom. The year 3/4 maths group have been learning about mapping and angles. The year five students have investigated 3D shapes and currently we are learning about angles. The year six students have completed a number of lessons about angle relationships and right now they are preparing to investigate how to create the biggest 3D pyramid from an A3 piece of paper. The year six students have enjoyed revisiting making 3D shapes with playdough and constructing skeletal models using straws and pipe-cleaners. Our netball competition is quickly coming to an end with semi-finals beginning next week. Congratulations to all our teams who have played so well and who have demonstrated excellent sportsmanship.
