1 NORTH VISTA SECONDARY SCHOOL Computer Applications 7018 Secondary 3 Normal (Technical) 2017 The Computer Application Experience The Computer Applications syllabus aims to prepare our Normal Technical (NT) students to be technologically adept citizens, and to function and contribute effectively in an increasingly technologically-driven world. KEY PROGRAMMES / COMPETITIONS The syllabus emphasises fundamental knowledge and skills, and include the appreciation and use of software application packages for the following: Word processing; Computer drawing and image editing; Multimedia presentations; Spreadsheet calculations and charts; Game design and programming; Applications on the Internet. Term Learning Experiences Learning Outcomes 1 PS1 I/II. Computer virus / Computer crimes PS1 III. Data privacy Students will learn about computer viruses, computer crimes and data privacy. They will learn what computer viruses and malicious software may do to computers and user data. Students will also understand more about computer crimes and their harmful effects. (a) Understand the effect of computer virus [1.5.1] (b) List measures to prevent computer virus [1.5.2] (c) List examples of computer crimes [1.5.3] (d) List measures to prevent computer crimes [1.5.4] (e) Show awareness of data privacy [1.5.5] PS2 I. Random number generator PS2 II. Variables Students will learn about game design and documentation process, and will be introduced to the concept of random number generation. Students will also learn what variables are and how to use the variables to create the game on their own. PS3 I. Mathematical operators PS3 II. Backgrounds Students will learn the use of mathematical operators in the form of quizzes. The use of flowcharts will also be explained so that students can create these flowcharts in the game documentation. (a) Understand and use a conditional loop [6.3.9] (b) Understand and use random number generator [6.4.3] (c) Understand use of a variable [6.4.6] (d) Change the value of a variable [6.4.7] (e) Output the value of a variable [6.4.8] (a) Understand and use mathematical operators [6.4.1] (b) Understand and use relational operators [6.4.2] (c) Read a response from the mouse [6.4.5] 1

2 PS4 I. Boolean operators PS4 II. Key press Students will learn how keyboard keys can be used to move objects; start or stop a game; and perform other actions. Students will also practice using instructions that were learnt in the previous lessons. (d) Describe what the game is about, in short paragraphs [6.5.1] (e) Determine the characters or objects for the game [6.5.2] (f) Create the scripts for the game [6.5.3] (g) Explain how the game is played [6.5.4] (a)read a key press [6.4.4] (b)draw flowchart for the game algorithm [6.5.5] Revision Exercises I / II previously through worksheets during practical and theory lessons. These worksheets will be kept with them as revision notes. Coursework Skill sets learnt in Sec 2 and 3 Students have to use their prior knowledge to create the game on their own or by tweaking the script in the animation taught in Secondary 2, to make it into a game. Students will revise what they have learnt in previous lessons. (a) Complete a game making coursework 2 Coursework Skill sets learnt in Sec 2 and 3 (Con t) - Based on the completed flowchart, students have to use their prior knowledge to create the game on their own or by tweaking the script in the animation taught in Secondary 2, to make it into a game. Revision Exercises and Sample Paper previously through worksheets and Sample Paper during practical and theory lessons. These worksheets will be kept with them as revision notes. (a) Complete a game making coursework Students will revise what they have learnt in previous lessons. Mid-Year Examination - Paper 1 (Written) JUNE HOLIDAYS 3 PS5 I. Count functions PS5 II. Bitmap graphics PS5 III. Hyperlinks Students will learn about sharing documents online and using functions for counting. Students will do conditional formatting and use skills such as sorting (numerically and alphabetically). Students will learn about the modulus function (MOD) and how it can be used to find the remainder when one value is divided by another. Lastly, students will use conditional and relational operators, together with rounding functions (e.g. ROUND) to calculate subject marks to the nearest whole number. Students will then draw a flowchart for a process to determine whether a Pass or Fail grade is to be awarded. PS7 I. Combination Chart PS7 II. Text box Students will learn how data is collected in a situation and represented visually using charts and tables. Students will learn how to create a combination chart to compare two set of data and also use text boxes to lay out the text and graphics for a newsletter. (a) Restrict cursor movement to input cells [4.2.1] (b) Understand how changes in one or more data items can affect other related data items [4.3.3] (c) Generate random numbers below a specific value [4.4.1] (d) Round (up or down) numeric data values [4.4.2] (e) Express numeric data values as whole number [4.4.3] (f) Find the remainder when one number is divided by another [4.4.4] (g) Understand and use conditional statements [4.4.7] (h) Understand and use relational operators to compare data values [4.4.8] (i) Express problem solutions using flowcharts [4.4.12] (a) Embed a chart (with or without data table) from spreadsheet [3.1.8] (b) Import text into text box (frame) [3.3.6] (c) Understand that text can flow from one text box (frame) to another [3.3.7] (d) Control the flow of text from one text box (frame) to another [3.3.8] (e) Add, remove or modify borders of a text box [3.3.9] (f) Import graphics into text box (frame) [3.3.10] 3

Networks and computers Students will learn how objects can be viewed from different angles and directions and use a 3D application software to design 3D models which are useful as samples of original products that can be manufactured. Students will understand the different types of network systems and how are they identified. Mail Merge PS9 II. Sound editing PS9 III. Slide show Students will learn how to use an application software to prepare a stack of personalised documents for the event using mail merge. They will also be editing sound clips which will be added into a multimedia slide show that will be run during a school open house scenario. 4 Revision Exercises and Sample Papers previously through worksheets and Sample Paper during practical and theory lessons. These worksheets will be kept with them as revision notes. (g) Understand and state that computers in a network can share resources such as documents, databases and software [1.1.17] (h) Understand the difference between intranet and internet [1.1.18] (i) Identify the situations in which computers are used in society [1.4.1] (j) State how the use of computers has affected the way people live and work [1.4.2] (k) State the various services available on the internet such as on-line news, cyber-shopping, on-line registrations, seat reservations and examinations [1.4.3] (a) Extract parts of a sound clip/track [2.3.3] (b) Edit sound clip/track for a purpose [2.3.4] (c) Record and store digital voice [2.3.5] (d) Understand the concept of mail merge [3.4.7] (e) Use the mail merge feature for documents with data from table in word processor [3.4.8] Revision on all skill set learnt. 4
