1 Kuna High School Physical Education Guidelines for Success Instructor: Mr. Stanley Phone: ext Semester: Spring 2017 School Year: Department: Physical Education and Health Course: Physical education PE Sports. Elective - Semester long class Philosophy Physical Education is an integral part of the education process therefore your student s physical education class should provide maximum participation for all students. This Physical Education class emphasizes the unique contribution that physical activity makes toward the students mental, social, and physical well-being. Physical Education has as its primary objective the building of sound bodies through physical activity. This class also has the distinctive opportunity to help the development of the sportpersonship of each student through physical activity. Students will have the opportunity to develop proper attitudes toward physical activities and good standards of social behavior. Therefore, every student should gain the self-satisfaction, and other desirable qualities that come through participation in physical activity. Student in this course will have the opportunity to participate in some of the following activities through out this semester: fitness and wellness activities, tennis, archery, ultimate Frisbee, badminton, flag football, speedball, floor hockey and team handball. Absent students If you are absent from class, you must complete a make-up assignment to receive the points for the day. You can get the make-up assignment form from Mr. Stanley or on the class website. Lockers Physical Education locks and lockers will be issued by the teacher. Cell Phone Policy: NO CELL PHONES During PE Class. NO cell phones in the locker room. Leave your cell phone in your locker or give your cell phone to my teacher aid. 1st classroom offense - the teacher has the discretion to take the student s devices for the remainder of the hour and the teacher will assign a classroom detention during tutorial. Communicate with parents about the violation of this policy. ( or phone call). Loss of 25 points from participation grading category. 2nd classroom offense - the device will be confiscated, turned in to the main office and a classroom detention during tutorial will be assigned. Confiscated devices need to be picked up in the main office by a parent. Loss of 25 points from participation grading category. 3rd classroom offense - the device will be confiscated, turned in to the main office and a classroom detention during tutorial will be assigned. Confiscated devices need to be picked up in the main office by a parent. Loss of 50 points from participation grading category. Dress and Grooming: Physical education clothing should be comfortable as well as clothing in which the student can safely participate in vigorous physical activity. The student s physical education clothing MUST be different from the clothes they wear to school or will be wearing for the rest of the school day. The Kuna High School dress and grooming policies will be followed. The Kuna high student handbook can be found at the following web location: 1. Shorts or sweat pants must be worn during class no cutoffs or denim shorts, long pants or Pajama clothing. 2. T-Shirts should be appropriate to an educational setting. Shirts that advertise alcohol, musical groups, gangs or drugs cannot be worn during class. No tank top or sleeveless shirts. 3. Athletic shoe must be worn no bare feet, sandals, hiking boot or dress shoes. 4. No Jewelry earrings, watches, necklace or any forms of jewelry. 5. No hats except outside. Tardies and Class Behavior Class participation A student is considered tardy if he/she is not in their assigned seat when the tardy bell rings. If a student arrives to class during the first twenty (20) minutes of the class period, they will be considered tardy. After the first twenty (20) minutes of the class period, they will be counted as absence. The 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd tardy of each class are there for those times when things happen like running late, locker problems, visited with a friend too long, etc. These tardies are free. On the 3 rd tardy I will notify parents. However, starting with the 4 th and 5 th tardy a referral to the administration for consequences. If a student is the cause of a class disruption and has a consequence assess. First they will lose 25 to 75 points from their participation grade and I will contact parents. The point value deduced will depend on the nature of the disruption. Major class disruption the student will be sent to the office. Student will have an opportunity to make up the loss of points for tardies and class disruption by doing an assignment. The

2 student must see Mr. Stanley during tutorial to get the tardy/class disruption makeup assignment. *****Truancy and school suspensions - Students may NOT make up the work missed. ***** Sick or Injured students If you are sick or injured, a parent or guardian must write a note, which will excuse you from participating for up to 2 days. If the sickness or injury is long, a doctor s note is required. Please list the sickness or injury on the note and list contact information (phone number) of your parent or guardian. Start of class When the tardy bell rights students will be at the assigned location for roll call if you are not at the assigned location when the bell rings you will be tardy. After roll is taken students will be given 5 minutes to dress and then return to the roll call location. End of class Student will be given about 10 minutes to re-dress. The students are required to return to the gym and wait to be excused. Do not leave the gym until the bell rings or the teacher excuses you. Grading 30% of the Students grade will be calculated from dressing out. Each day is worth 1 point if students are unprepared for class they will receive a (-4) point deduction for that day. Unprepared (not changing into appropriate class dress)... (-4 points) 30% of the Students grade will be calculated from participation. Students will receive 1 points a day for participation. Mandatory Fitness Testing is incorporated into your participation grade. Athletes must participate on the day of a contest. The following actions will result in point deductions from this participation grade: Non-participation (-4 points) Leaving field/ gym or locker room without permission... (-10 points) Tardy to activity (-2 points) Violation of safety rules (-2 to 10 points) Misconduct / Profanity (-2 to 10 points) 20% of the Students grade will be calculated from skills test and game play. Grading rubric for Student participation in game play Exemplary (3) Satisfactory (2) Sportsmanship Encourages others, Takes turns, Takes turns, shares, no put-downs Takes care of self, Usually positive Effort / Participation Awesome participation, always on task, constantly pushes self, prepared for class Steady participation, On task, usually pushes self Needs Improvement (1) Required frequent interventions, demeans others, selfish, often not positive Not yet working, passive participation, sometimes on task, seldom pushes self. Skills / Performance Knowledge Can do things well, uses the proper technique Communicates and applies the rules. Can do many thing well, improving, consistent techniques most of the time. Can usually communicate and apply rules. Can do some things well, inconsistent, sometimes uses technique. Seldom communicates and seldom applies rules. 20% of the Students grade will be calculated from test, quizzes, daily and other written assignments. Grading Scale A = 100% - 90% D = 69% - 60% NO Dress Policy. B = 89% - 80% F = 59% - 50% 3 no dress = phone call home C = 79% - 70% 4 no dress = phone call home discipline referral 5 no dress in a semester will result in a failing grade.

3 Physical Education Class Expectations Dear Parent/Guardian: In order to guarantee your child and all the students in my health classroom, the learning environment they deserve, I am utilizing the following discipline plan in my classroom. I believe all students can behave appropriately in my classroom. I will not tolerate any student who interferes with my teaching or who keeps other students from learning. Guidelines for successful Student Behavior 1. You may engage in any behavior that does not create a problem for you or anyone else in the world. 2. If you find yourself with a problem, you may solve it by any means that does not cause a problem for anyone else in the world. 3. You may engage in any behavior that does not jeopardize the safety or learning of yourself or others. To ensure that the above Guidelines for Success are followed, I will operate with the following principles as my guide: 1. I will react without anger or haste to problem situations. I will provide consequences that are not punitive but that allow the student to experience the results of a poor choice, enabling him or her to make better choices in the future. 2. I will proceed in all situations with the best interest of the student. The student s academic, social and emotional well-being will be fostered. 3. I will guide students toward personal responsibility and the decision-making skills which they will need to function in the real world. 4. I will arrange consequences for problem situations in such a way that the student will not be humiliated or demeaned. 5. Equal is not always fair. Consequences will be designed to fit the problems of individual students and they may be different even when problems appear to be the same. 6. I will make every effort to ensure that the students involved will understand why they are involved in consequences. 7. If I at any time act or react in a way that a student truly feels in unjust the student needs to say to me, I m not sure that s fair. I will arrange a private conference during which the student can express to me why he or she feels my actions were not fair. This may or may not change my course of action. 8. I am always open to calm, rational discussion of any manner.
