1 Grade Level Benchmarks (GLB) describe the concepts and skills we want students to know and be able to demonstrate in each grade level and each course. Teachers will assess student academic performance for each GLB while providing instruction and tasks to maximize student progress toward demonstrating the expectations for each course. 3 rd Grade Grade Level Benchmarks and Components Oskaloosa Community School District * 1800 N. 3 rd St., Oskaloosa, IA 52577

2 3 rd Grade - Grade Level Benchmarks and Components Language Arts 3 rd Grade students will demonstrate the ability to read, write, and comprehend a variety of genre. A 3 rd Grade student in Language Arts will be assessed to determine what they know or are able to demonstrate on the following Grade 1. I can describe and compare/contrast theme, characters, setting, or events in a story, drawing on specific details in a text a. Read and comprehend a variety of fiction using specific strategies b. Ask and answer questions by providing details from a text c. Explain how specific aspects of illustrations contribute to the mood or setting of a story d. Determine theme, lesson, or moral of a story providing key details e. Describe the characters in a story and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events f. Distinguish their point of view from that of the narrator or those of the characters g. Read with accuracy and fluency to support comprehension h. Determine the meaning of words and phrases used in a text distinguishing between literal and non- literal language 2. I can describe and compare/contrast a variety of non-fiction texts a. Read and comprehend a variety of non- fiction texts using specific strategies b. Ask and answer questions from details in a text c. Determine the main idea of a text d. Describe the logical connection of text when using time, sequence, comparison and cause/effect e. Use text features, illustrations, and search tools to locate in a text f. Students will create works of art using various techniques: drawing with a variety of media, painting, ceramics, and the building of three-dimensional projects. Students will also participate in class discussions on various works of art using art vocabulary. A 3 rd Grade student in Art will be assessed to determine what they know or are able to 1.
