1 Geometry CP Mr. Brocket Course Syllabus Introduction: Geometry is the discipline of mathematics that defines the relationships of the space we live in. Geometry is based on a set of proven laws which, when applied with logic and algebra, allow student to prove other geometric facts. Geometry is used extensively in everyday live, especially in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction. This course will prepare students for their future success in subsequent classes and college entrance exams, and will follow the State of South Carolina Geometry standards. There will be an EOC exam for this course. Units to be covered this year Points, Lines, Planes and Angles Parallel and Perpendicular Lines Rigid Transformations and Congruence Other Properties of Triangles Parallelograms and Quadrilaterals Dilations, Similarity, and Proportional Relationships Right Triangles and Trig Area and Volume Circles Probability Supplies you need to bring to class everyday IPad (school provided) IPad stylus Pencil A 1in binder Loose - leaf paper Loose leaf graph paper A scientific calculator, preferably a TI-83, 83 Plus or 84 graphing calculator. YOU WILL NEED IT FOR TESTS. Password for a digital textbook (teacher provided) IPADS in Mr. Brocket s Classroom Apps that we will use on a regular basis on the IPad (for now) Noteability Google Drive Showbie My Homework Educreation Desmos Besides bring their IPAD, students will be asked to bring a traditional notebook, pencil, and paper to class every day. There are times when the internet will be down, you will forget your Ipad or it won t be charged, or we will have a lesson that can only be done on pencil and paper. Students will download warm-ups, notes, class activities, homework, and reflective journals from the shared Google Drive folder and open them in Noteability. Students will be asked to create a Noteability binder for Geometry as I specify. Assignments will be turned in using Showbie, and a class calendar of our work will be developed using the My Homework app. I may also use the app Remind to send out text messages of upcoming events to students. I have not decided whether homework will be graded using Showbie or whether I will grade it at student desk and then have students submit it on Showbie. It depends on what I find is faster. 1

2 We might not use an IPAD everyday in class. It is one of many learning tools we will use to make your educational experience personal and relevant. We will have a stoplight system on the use of IPADs in the classroom. Red light means ipads are not in use in any way. Yellow light means you are using specific apps only. Green light means you may use any APPROPRIATE app to complete the given task/assignment. You may take pictures of class notes only when given permission by me to do so. Ipads are always to be put away when we are testing. Ipad will not be used to take a summative test. Expectations and rules to live by Be on time to class and always do your best during it. Be respectful to myself and others. Come prepared to class every day. Have a positive attitude No food, drink, or gum in the classroom. The only allowable drinks is unflavored water with caps. (because of ants) No talking is allowed during the announcements, warm-up activities, tests, quizzes, or while I am teaching the whole class. Do not throw away trash by shooting baskets. Never stand up by the door at the end of class. Stay seated until the bell rings to dismiss you. Do not ask for a bathroom pass between classes or after lunch before the tardy bell rings. If you are not in your seat when the bell rings you are tardy, regardless of whether you were in the bathroom or not. Don t ask for a bathroom pass the first 10 minutes of class. Students must return all calculators and have their desk area cleaned up before they leave. Possible consequences for not meeting my expectations or following class rules After-school or lunch detention Parent phone call or Notification of an athletic coach Referral Personal Electronics Policy All cell phones are expected to be off during class and may not be used as calculators unless I give you permission. On special occasions you may be allowed to listen to MP3 players or music through your cell phone. If any cell phone is used for text messaging or social media and I see it, the device will be taken away and given to an administrator. If I hear a cell phone go off, I will remind you to turn it off and not take it from you. If I catch you with any electronic device other than an IPAD out and on, besides a calculator, without permission: First offense I will keep it until the end of the day After the first offense I will turn it in to an administrator 2

3 Bathroom Pass Policy You do not have to ask for a bathroom pass, all you have to do is, 1) Grab the boys or girls bathroom pass from the folder on the table at the back of the room 2) Sign out on the class travel log 3) When you return, sign back in on the class travel log and return the bathroom pass. If you are using the bathroom pass too frequently, one of your parents will be contacted and you may lose bathroom privileges if your parents do not tell me you have a related medical condition. Tardiness Students are expected to be on time to class. A student is tardy when he/she is not in their seat by the time the bell has rung and does not have a pass for being late. After the 4 th tardy, students will be given a discipline referral. Nine-week Grades I will use a percentage system to calculate nine-week grades. Tests 45% Quizzes and Projects 35% Homework and other assignments 20% Power of I program My class participates in the Power of I program. If a student does not pass a test with at least a 70%, they have not shown sufficient mastery of the unit s material, and will be given a 1 in the gradebook for that test, and for their overall grade until test corrections have been made. Students will be assigned afterschool tutoring in the ICU tutoring rooms and make test corrections until the score is a 70% or higher. If students do not attend ICU tutoring, parents will be contacted by the ICU coordinator (me), and they will be rescheduled until students attend and make their 70%. Students will be assigned a score of 70% on a mastered re-assessment, even if the make-up grade was higher. Keep in mind, just passing summative assignments like tests does not guarantee a student will pass the course for the year. By completing all homework assignments on-time, staying organized, and performing well on mid-unit quizzes and projects, the student is helping to insure they are prepared for the mastery test the first time and do not have to spend the extra time after school on tutoring and making test corrections. Homework grading policies Homework, or classwork assignments that were not finished during the class period, are due the next class period, unless otherwise stated by me. Most, but not all, homework assignments will be submitted using showbie the next day. Homework assignments will be collected and graded at my discretion. Assignments are graded on a scale, usually out of 10 possible points, based on the number of problems attempted and completed with work shown, or completion of the writing assignment. Students will not receive credit on assignments if work is not shown as taught by me. Thus, homework is not graded for accuracy, but is used by me as a formative assessment tool. We normally go over the answers to homework the next class period; therefore it is important that students complete homework on time so students and I can assess how well they understood the material. If work is not turned in on time, they will receive 7 points for late credit. Students must turn in late homework on or before the day they are to take the unit test, or their homework will not be graded. All late assignments should be turned into Showbie as well. If students are habitually not turning in their homework, or not keeping an organized set of notes on the Ipad, I will try to contact parents by phone or . 3

4 If a student is absent from school, they have as many days as they are absent to turn in missing work and receive full credit. It is the student s responsibility to get their make-up work. Students will be able to access make-up work by looking on My Homework and downloading it from Google Drive. If a student needs to get notes, they can me and I will you back a copy of the notes. Tests must be made up the next class day if the student is only absent the day of the test. If a student is absent from class for more than one day, they must meet with me and determine a day they will come in to make up their test. They will make up their test in the Math tutoring rooms. The math department offers tutoring Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 3:25 until 4:10 in the freshman academy, as well as free bus transportation directly to your home, once they have finished tutoring. Because of family and ICU commitments, I will not be available to offer after school tutoring myself.
