C461 Instructor Harry Garmanian Voice Mail (14026) Math Office Course Description: The basic objective of this course is to provide skills in solving real life problems by manipulating, analyzing, and interpreting tabular and graphical data. It is a study of evaluating algebraic expressions, solving linear equations, and indentifying functions in various forms. Textbook: Introductory Algebra,a Custom Edition for Scottsdale Community College by Richelle M. Blair, et. al. Calculator: A graphic calculator is required for this course. T1-83 or T1-84 calculator is highly recommended. Course Competencies: 1. Solve linear equations. 2. Graph linear functions given data tables or an equation. 3. Determine and interpret the domain and range of a function given its graph.

2 4. Determine and interpret the slope and intercepts of a linear equations or function. 5. Understand the relationship between the slopes of perpendicular and parallel lines. 6. Given sufficient information or data, write linear relationships. 7. Use function notation to represent and evaluate linear relationships. 8. Solve linear inequalities and graph solution on the real number line and on the coordinate plane. 9. Solve linear systems in two variables by graphing, substitution, & elimination methods. 10.Simplify polynomial expressions. 11.Perform operations on polynomials (add, subtract, multiply, divide, powers). 12.Model and solve real-world problems using linear equations, proportions and systems of linear equations. The faculty and programs at Scottsdale Community College are dedicated not only to effective teaching and successful learning in regard to your academic growth, but are equally committed to enhancing your critical thinking skills and personal development. In addition to the activities and assignments provided to assist you in the learning of this course content, there will be activities to help enhance and assess your critical thinking skills and aspects of your personal development as they relate to this class. Periodically, you will be asked to participate in individual and/or group tasks which will help you better understand your own growth in these two areas. Tests There will be five chapter tests (100 points each) plus a final comprehensive exam (150points). You must let me know in advance if unable to take a test on the scheduled day. Only one makeup test will be allowed which must be taken at the Testing Center at times other than class time. All students are required to

3 take the final exam during the scheduled time. The final exam will include all material covered during the semester. Grades Components of the Grade: Grading Scale: 5Chapter Tests 500 Points A=90%-100% Homework 100 Points B=80%-89% Cumulative Final Exam150 Points C=70%-79% Class Activities/Participation/Attendance (50 Points) D=60%-69% Total 800 Points F=Under 60% Attendance Students are required and expected to attend all classes, to be on time, and to stay for the entire class period. District policy states that a student may be dropped from a class when he/she has accumulated more absences than the number of class meeting per week. However, for the purposes of this class, each student will be allowed three absences. Students who accumulate more than three absences (the equivalent of two weeks of class) prior to the 45 th day may automatically be dropped from the class by the instructor. After the 45 th day, it is the student s responsibility to complete the necessary paperwork and submit it to the Admissions and Records Office in order to withdraw from the course. Be advised that if your name appears on the final roster you will be given the grade you have earned in the course! Homework: Each student is required to keep a math only notebook for homework. It must be arranged by chapter and section number. The work must be neat and organized. I will check the homework notebooks during each chapter test period. 20 points will be given for each assigned homework provided ALL the work is completed.. Work not turned in when due will only be accepted the next time the class meets for a maximum of 15 points. All work must be shown.

4 Note: The homework for which you will earn credit is the assigned exercises in Doing Mathematics at the end of each section. The required problems are EVERY OTHER ODD AND EVEN PROBLEMS. Math and Tutoring Center This center provides free tutoring and resources to reinforce and supplement classroom instruction and assists SCC students to achieve academic success. Free tutoring services are available at the Math and Tutoring Center which is located at CM 441A. The Center also provides instructional support resources in the form of videotapes, software, and print materials. Special Needs: Students with disabilities are required to register for services in the Disability Resources and Services (DRS) office in the Student Center at the beginning of the semester. The DRS office will meet with you to determine accommodations based on the appropriate documentation. This must be on file before any accommodation will be provided to students. Faculty is not authorized to provide any accommodations nor can they approve any accommodations for students in class. This office is located at in SC-144 and the telephone number is Academic Integrity Students are expected to do their own work. You are encouraged to work together and to study together if you believe it will help you, however, your work must be your own. If any form of dishonesty does occur, disciplinary action within MCCD policy and guidelines will be taken to ensure fairness to all students.
