Larson Middle School

Mission The purpose of Larson Middle School is to ensure learning for all members of the school community. Vision Larson Middle School will become an exemplary learning community that embraces innovation and is committed to continuous improvement. Larson Middle School will be a place where a collaborative community develops curriculum, instructional strategies, and assessment to ensure all students learn and maximize individual potential.

Building Belief Statements Larson Middle School is committed to excellence Larson Middle school is a key element in the community and has a responsibility to be a resource for enhancing the quality of life for all citizens The educational process is a partnership with the entire community including family, business, and community organizations The educational programs will provide each student the best opportunity to learn, to develop personally and to experience success.

Goal 1 Writing

District Goal All students will be on track to be college/career ready in literacy. Larson SMART Goal All students will improve their academic writing proficiency by 5% during the school year as measured by school wide pre and post writing assessments.

Why did you choose this goal? The English department chose this goal after looking at our 7 th grade MEAP writing scores and to support the district literacy goal. The goal also focuses on timed writing for the Common Core Curriculum Smarter Assessment.

Pre-Assessment Data ALL GRADE LEVELS: Wrote to grade level writing prompts Writing was scored against common grade level specific rubrics PROMPTS: 6 th grade Pre-assessment data collected December 2011-January Timed Expository Writing Write an essay explaining why someone you care about is important to you. 7th grade Pre-assessment data collected October 2011-November Argument Writing Explain why a community resource should remain open. 8 th grade Pre-assessment data collected December January Timed Expository Writing Explain how you have changed since entering middle school

Brief Summary of Work on this Goal Including Future Plans: Common Assessment data at each grade level was collected from pre and post assessment results. The results show that not all students met the 5% increase in academic writing. After analyzing the data we found our largest gap was in the 8 th grade. This gap seemed to demonstrate that students were apt to be more successful when given the same writing prompt. This indicates students acknowledge writing strategies, but have difficulty interpreting new prompts. In the future we plan to work with consistent writing prompts and rubrics implementing in the fall and culminating in the spring. In an effort to align with the Common Core Standards, we will be working with students to interpret, analyze questions/prompts in order to create meaningful responses. Students will also understand academic vocabulary to enhance writing.

Goal 2 Math

District Goal All students will be on track to be college/career ready in mathematics. Larson SMART Goal All students will improve their math skills by 10% by the end of the school year as evidenced by the math department common assessments.

Why did you choose this goal? After analyzing MEAP and common assessment data, it was evident that students needed to improve their ability to problem solve in the following grade level objectives: 6 th grade fractions, decimal and integers; 7 th gradefunctions and linear equations; 8 th gradelinear systems of equations.

Pre-Assessment Data 6 th Grade AT Foundations-Quarterly Assessments, Math 6-Midterm Exam, Pre- Algebra Honors-Midterm Exam 7 th Grade AT 7-Quarterly Assessments, Pre-Algebra-Midterm Exam, Algebra Honors- Midterm Exam 8 th Grade AT 8-Quarterly Assessments, Algebra-Midterm Exam, Geometry-Midterm Exam

Strategies Developed and Implemented

Strategies: The strategies below were used at the 6 th grade, 7 th grade, and 8 th grade levels: Note taking, summarizing, mapping Foldables, compare and contrast- Marzano Grouping: Utilized different methods of grouping. Small group instructions: using learning centers and/or Title 1 tutors. Use before and after school Title 1 tutoring and remediation classes. Offering pre-algebra and algebra support classes in the 7 th grade and 8 th grade. Team-teaching in the 6 th grade and 8 th grade levels. Utilizing Edline to post assignments, upcoming assessments, as well as grades.

Post-Assessment Data Conclusions As presented in our results, a majority of students met the goal of increasing by 10%. One challenge that we faced was the changes that took place with some of the post assessments since the pre-assessments had been administered. In addition, another challenge was the change in the math tutor allotment due to Title 1. Furthermore, some students scored so well on the pre-assessment that there was not room for them to improve by 10%.

Brief Summary of Work on this Goal Including Future Plans: Common Assessment data at each grade level was collected from pre and post assessment results. The results show that not all students met the 10% increase in mathematic understanding. In the future we plan to work with consistent pre and post assessments. The math curriculum in changing next year so we are planning on trying other strategies to better help students. Some of those strategies include running support classes every other day to accommodate more students.

Goal 3 Science

District Goal All students will be on track to be college/career ready in science. Larson SMART Goal All students in science will improve their ability to draw conclusions from sets of data and analyze information from data found in tables and graphs by 5%. The results will be based upon common assessments taken in September and again towards the end of the school year.

Why did you choose this goal? We chose this goal because this is one of the few areas that the students scored 69% and below in the last two years of the district s learning target report. In addition, these skills are essential to the science curriculum and future success on college entrance exams, and higher education pursuits.

Pre-Assessment Data 6 th grade- selected nine questions that met the criteria from the district common assessment. 7 th grade- selected 9 questions from their district common assessment. 8 th grade created the questions to be used, as they didn t have a common assessment piece in place as of the date. * All of the questions focused specifically on the skill of reading and analyzing data tables, charts and graphs.

Strategies Developed and Implemented

Strategies: Common core literacy skills were implemented. Marzano strategies including use of graphic organizers, compare and contrast, cause and effect and cooperative learning. Opportunities to read, create, and analyze charts, tables and graphs using benchmark content from text. Opportunities to use real data from experiments to create graphs, tables and charts and engage in analysis of such data. Implement methods to teach reading of graphs as defined in Reading Graphs a 4 Step Method (Friel, Curico & Bright 2001). Skills Activity Books -ancillary materials which provide additional practicum provided by the text book publisher- Pearson Title I tutoring and literacy support

Post-Assessment Data Conclusions The post test results show that all grade levels had a majority of students who have increased their scores at least 5%. * met goal not yet met goal 0 6th grade 7th grade 8th grade *These numbers do not include the students who scored 100% on the pretest, moved out of the district, or new students who entered Larson after the testing periods.

Brief Summary of Goal Including Future Plans: The data was collected from pre and post common assessment results. A majority of the students met the goal of a 5% increase in the learning target. However, since all of the students have not met the goal, we will continue to focus on developing these skills and integrating them across the curriculum while seeking other areas of weakness to create our new goal.

Goal 4 Social Studies

District Goal All students will be on track to be college/career ready in social studies. Larson SMART Goal All students will improve reading comprehension scores by 2% based upon the results of common assessments administered by the social studies department.

Why did you choose this goal? After analyzing MEAP data we realized that students showed an area of weakness in Social Studies. Therefore, to align with the district goal, we chose to focus on reading comprehension with expository text. This focus will also prepare students for the Common Core initiatives in reading and literacy.

Pre-Assessment Data A pretest was administered in 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grade in October of Students in each grade level read a short, informational passage relevant to their curriculum and answered comprehension questions about that passage.

Strategies Developed and Implemented

Strategies: Marzano Strategies note taking, compare and contrast, predicting, summarizing, graphic organizers Mi-Class -- Middle School Content Literacy Assessments Standards and Strategies highlighting and rewording key words, chunking, think-alouds, talking to the text, text in the middle SIOP Sheltered Instructional Observation Protocol stop and jot, turn and talk, vocabulary practice Title I Tutoring and Literacy Support

Post-Assessment Data A post-test was administered in 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grade in March of Students in each grade level read a short, informational passage relevant to their curriculum and answered comprehension questions about that passage. Grade 6 Met goal 21% Did not meet goal - score remained same 14% 54% Did not meet goal - score dropped 11% Growth not shown due to initial score

Post-Assessment Data Grade 7 Met Goal 29% 36% Did not meet goal - score remained same Did not meet goal - score dropped 24% 11% Growth not shown due to initial score

Post-Assessment Data Grade 8 17% Met goal 47% Did not meet goal - score remained same 25% Did not meet goal - score dropped 11% Growth not shown due to initial score

Brief Summary of Goal Including Future Plans: Common Assessment data at each grade level was collected from pre and post assessment results. The results show that not all students met the 2% increase in informational reading. Several contributing factors have been discovered: Some students scored too high on pre-test to measure growth on post-test All At-risk, ELL, and special needs students showed growth in some cases as much as 60% Average students did not show as much growth. After observations, it was noticeable that many of these students do not apply the strategies independently. In the future social studies teachers plan to continue the use of these strategies for continued growth in reading for information. Next year s focus will be on finding strategies to motivate and engage the average student to use reading strategies independently without extrinsic rewards.
