8 8 Integrated Lesson Leaders and Leadership (Microsoft PowerPoint) EDUCATIONAL GAME: (10 minutes) A suitable educational game, as per Appendix A, may be used as an optional activity at any point during the course of the lesson at the discretion of the ICT or class teacher TOUCH TYPING (5 minutes) Check that all Learners: 1. Have their hands in the correct touch typing position (ASDF JKL; - home keys) 2. Look at the screen all the time 3. Are sitting up straight with their bodies square to the keyboard TECH TALK: (5 minutes) FORMAT PAINTER To copy text formatting, select the text that has the formatting you want to copy select the format painter and highlight the text you want to format.

9 9 INTEGRATED ACTIVITY In order to promote relevant discussion, the following questions are posed by the educator to the learners: - What are the qualities of a good leader? - Is it always enjoyable to be a leader? - Are there negative aspects to being a leader? A short discussion takes place about leadership and the qualities needed to be a good leader. Your class / year / grade is holding an election to vote for this term s / quarter s Class Senators / Prefects / Monitors. Hold a discussion with the class about the positive, negative and interesting aspects of being a leader (PNI). Is it always fun to be a leader? Does it have its negative aspects? Divide the class into 3 groups group 1 brainstorms the positive, group 2 the negative, group 3 the interesting about being a leader. One person in each group can then report back to the class. It is important to emphasize to learners that not being a leader does not make you a bad person. We need all types of people to make things work the world cannot consist of chiefs only. Remind them that we all have our strengths and that we should be proud of those and work to improve them all the time. Task: Create a presentation about yourself which motivates why you should become a Class Senator / Prefect / Monitor and how you can contribute to the smooth running of your class. Include photographs of yourself which show your strengths and talents. Note to the educator: This task should ideally include photographs of learners doing different things to demonstrate their strengths. If the school has a digital camera, demonstrate its use and allow the learners to take two or three photographs of each other and download them into a shared folder.

10 10 Learners could also be requested to use their own family digital cameras. If the school has a scanner, learners could bring photos of themselves to be scanned and downloaded into a shared folder. As a result of the varied models of scanners and digital cameras being used by schools, instructions for their use are not included. When you scan pictures, they should be saved to a shared folder. 1. Create a Vote for Me folder in your digital portfolio locate your digital portfolio double click to open file new folder type Vote for Me in the name bar enter 2. Open the MS Power Point programme by clicking on the Power Point icon on the desktop or by clicking Start New Office Document Blank Presentation (Power Point 2000) 3. Power Point 2000: Select a suitable layout OK 4. Power Point XP: Select blank presentation from the menu on the right of the screen select a layout from the menu which pops up on the right 5. Save your document into your Leaders folder in your digital portfolio file save as locate your new folder double click type a suitable name in the file name box save 6. To change the page orientation of your presentation file page setup landscape 7. Select a title layout for your first slide right click on the slide away from any text box select the title layout option OK 8. Select a suitable background right click between text boxes on the first Power Point XP slide background click on the down arrow in the background fill box fill effects select an effect OK OK 9. Note to the educator: If you have photos saved in a picture folder, they can be used as a background right click on the slide background click on the down arrow in the background fill box fill effects picture select picture locate the pictures folder double click to insert a picture

11 Click in the text box to insert a catchy introductory statement 11. Format the text in the text boxes by highlighting the text format font select style and size changes OK 12. If you would like other text on your slide to be the same as the main heading use the format painter to change the style and size of other text on your slide click on the format painter on the formatting toolbar 13. If the format painter is not visible click on the more buttons icon on the formatting toolbar format painter 14. Highlight the text you want to format the text will automatically appear in the same style as that of the first text you formatted 15. If you wish to rotate the text on your title slide click on the box rotate tool on the drawing toolbar a green dot will appear click on the dot and rotate the text box. In Power Point XP click on the green dot attached to the adjustment handles on the shape 16. To insert a picture from the clip art library (Note to the educator: Ensure that the clip art library is available for learners to access) insert picture clip art type a search word in the search for clips box use the scroll bar to scroll through the pictures click to insert (Power Point XP) click on the blue arrow to insert (Power Point 2000) 17. To insert scanned or digital images insert picture from file locate the folder where the photographs or images are saved double click to insert 18. You are now going to motivate why you should be elected a leader in your class (Note to the educator: discuss with the class how many slides they should have in their presentation) 19. To insert a new slide insert new slide select a suitable layout 20. Insert a suitable background 21. Type a heading in the title box 22. Type a short phrase about your first strength 23. Insert new slides, text, backgrounds and pictures

12 To animate your slide presentation click on your first slide and then on slide show custom animation 25. Power Point 2000: In the top left of the custom animation dialogue box, check the objects in the slide which you wish to animate OK 26. Click on the arrows next to the animation order window to change the order of appearance 27. Power Point XP: click on the down arrow in the add effect box select entrance select an effect click on play at the bottom of the custom animation window to preview the animation 28. Do the same to each slide until you have animated every slide in the presentation 29. To view your slide show slide show view show esc to end the show Power Point XP 30. You are now going to add notes to your slide show click on the normal view button in the bottom left corner of the screen 31. Notes pane: The notes pane lets you add your speaker notes or information you want to share with the audience, which you don t want to appear on the slide 32. Quick save CTRL S 33. Power Point 2000: Set the slide transition slide show slide transition select an effect and speed 31. Under the advance heading select on mouse click and automatically after. Click on the up arrows and increase the number to 10 seconds select a sound if you so wish apply to all Power Point 2000
