1 The Cougar Connection Simons Middle School Our Vision is to become a School of Distinction Volume 1 Issue 3 March 2015 Inside SMS is challenging students Gateway teachers are using innovative programs to capture students attention in the classroom. 2 Operation Preparation 8 th grade students visit FCHS to speak with Community representatives about career and college readiness. 5 Our vision is to become a School of Distinction, a clear and simple message that has been conveyed during the school year. It resonates, its appealing, but more importantly it is relevant to the stakeholders of Fleming County Schools. Throughout the year we have conveyed the message that we want to be the best, to be a model for all middle schools in Kentucky. The focused work that has been accomplished by our students, teachers, Leadership Team, Committees, SBDM, and parents is amazing. Close your eyes for a few minutes and just think what SMS has accomplished over the past several months working together. Data usage and student engagement are essential to effective teaching. Utilizing data effectively not only increases student achievement but also encourages student engagement. One of the areas we are working very hard on at SMS is exploring how to engage students through the use of data creating data walls, data binders, and even having students track their own data. When students can discuss their own data think about what is possible in the classroom. In our department level Professional Learning Communities teachers are sharing data over common student assessments and using that data to have Continued on Page 6

2 2 The Cougar Connection Volume 1 Issue 2 February 2015 Science is a Drag! Mrs. Comb s Gateway to Technology class has been very busy learning how to create 3-Dimensional models using computer software. Students used Google Sketchup to design a building and then used Inventor to design a Pegboard Toy for children. After learning how to use the Inventor program, students created their own design for a dragster which they are now constructing by operating a scroll saw and drill press. Once the dragsters are complete, students will test their designs by racing their dragsters against each other to see which design performs better. 5 5 The Cougar Connection Volume 1 Issue 2- February 2015 Operation Preparation held for 8 th grade students Fleming County Schools planned an event called Operation Preparation to coincide with a statewide initiative to increase competitiveness of the global market and encourage career and college readiness among our 8 th and 10 grade students. Throughout this past week, 8 th graders have met with high school guidance staff to plan their freshman schedule. As the excitement builds in transitioning to high school, students were able to travel to FCHS and take a tour of the school. On Tuesday, March 10 th, 8 th graders were bussed to FCHS. Additionally, students participated in Operation Preparation. Community members participated in a morning long event at our high school representing over 35 occupations. Students were scheduled three different sessions based on their Career Interest Survey. Students had the opportunity to meet in small groups with the community partners in an advising session and discuss the students career aspirations and the required education/training needed to meet their goals and career plans. Students were also encouraged and challenged to take more rigorous coursework while in high school to prepare for a successful future. A broad base of occupations were represented during the event and sparked many career interest among our students.. We would like to thank ALL of our community partners for assisting us with this important event. 5

6 6 The Cougar Connection Volume 1 Issue 2 February 2015 Simons Middle School Students of the Month Social Studies Teachers selected students of the month for February! Congratulations to Gina Kirby, Tanner Faris, Herbert Grimm, Ron Smith, Dalton Williams, Principal s Choice and Cody Kissell, for Band. Continued from Page 1 meaningful conversations around instructional practices. These PLCs will become the cornerstone of our Continuous Improvement efforts through the remainder of this year and into the school year. Last but not least, we believe that writing in the content areas has tremendous benefits on student achievement. Students deepen their knowledge of course material by writing. Whether reflecting on what they ve learned, composing a question, or connecting knowledge to personal experience, writing extends students engagement of a subject. If students have a chance to explore course material through writing, they are likely to feel more invested in it, to be better able to discuss it, and to retain what they ve learned. Reading our students writing whether a paragraph describing a lecture or a research paper gives us a heightened sense of their grasp on course concepts. This, in turn, allows us to teach to their needs. Writing gives students practice in participating in the discipline. Rather than simply testing their acquisition of knowledge, writing provides an opportunity to analyze, challenge and contribute to existing ideas. As we head toward the home stretch, I hope all of you have a very enjoyable Spring Break. We continue to look forward to the opportunity to show what our kids can do this spring. If you ever have any questions about anything don t hesitate to contact our office and we ll be glad to talk to you about it. It s a great day to be a Cougar!!! Simons Middle School Principal 6
