2 Why do certain people become famous? There are some people who find themselves in the spotlight for what they have achieved. Others want to be the centre of attention, and so they deliberately look for fame. But is the reality of being famous as attractive as it appears?
3 READING SECTION TASK 1 - Read the following three texts and annotate (make notes/underline key points) as you read them: What is fame? is an extract from a book about fame in the 21 st century. Welcome to the Brit School. is an article from The Observer newspaper. The whole world must be watching. is an extract from Dame Ellen MacArthur s autobiography.

10 TASK 2 - Answer all 7 questions You will be assessed for your reading skills, including your understanding of the text in relation to each question. Think about the effect of words chosen and remember to analyse using the P-E-E Point Evidence Explanation technique, where appropriate. Questions 1 and 2 refer to the text: What is fame? What impressions do you get of MacArthur s different feelings now that the race is over? (5 marks) Write at least one page in your response. Remember to use quotes in your answer. Write about: MacArthur s reactions to the crowds in paragraph 5. The different feelings MacArthur experiences in paragraph 6. How MacArthur feels about the end of the race in paragraph 7.

15 Writing Section Complete Task 3. Spend minutes on this question. You will be assessed for your writing skills, including the presentation of your work. Take special care with handwriting, spelling and punctuation. Think about the purpose, audience and, where appropriate, the format for your writing. The quality of your writing is more important than its length. You should write about one to two pages for each task but extra has been supplied. TASK 3 Washing-up disaster! You are a reporter for the Shepton Mallet Journal. You hear news that a tanker full of washing-up liquid has spilled onto the streets in the centre of town and is causing delays and chaos. Write a detailed report on the incident, informing the readers about: What happened and how it happened. What the effects are. What the council is going to do about it. Skills to show off: Accurate, neat writing Paragraphs Exciting descriptions about the incident use imagery, for example adjectives, similes, metaphors A range of perspectives: eyewitness reports, police statements Humour and originality

Look through your answers. Underline any spellings that you think are incorrect. Use a dictionary to check these. Write any corrections here:
