2 About Ms. Mitchek For those of you who do not know me, I am Ashton Mitchek. I grew up here in Cheyenne Wells and graduated in I then went to college and majored in elementary education at Fort Hays State University. I graduated with my bachelors in May This is my fifth year as a classroom teacher and I am very excited. This will be my first year teaching 5 th and 6 th grade Language Arts. My goal is to incorporate different delivery strategies in order to have students learn and retain the information. Also, I feel very privileged to have the different technology we do in our classroom. We will be using the smart board, an ipad, smart document camera., and blogging If you have any questions throughout the year, feel free to talk to me, my door is always open. My contact information is at the end of the handbook. I look forward to spending this year with your child. 2

3 Mission Statement: We will work as a team to make a positive, safe, and effective learning environment for everyone; teachers, students, and guardians. Classroom Expectations: As the students are getting older, I will be expecting more of them. First I expect them to be responsible. This means they are responsible for their behavior, their supplies, their work area, their quality of work, and their actions. Also, I expect them to have a positive attitude and always try their best. I know some aspects of school can be very difficult, but it s important to try hard so that as teachers we can get the best idea of how the students are achieving. Finally, I expect the students to be compassionate towards others. To me this means that students do not judge others and have a general understanding that we are all different and that is what helps make the world a great place. Discipline Procedure: Since the students are older, I will expect them to help monitor their behavior and also we will talk about appropriate consequences for a behavior. If the behavior continues then I will contact the principal and also the guardian will be notified of what is happening in the classroom. Snack and Drinks: Drinks can be brought for parties, just make sure that you have enough for everyone. The students are allowed to bring a water bottle to school, but it must have a lid on it. They are not allowed to bring any other drink besides water to school to drink throughout the day. If you feel your child needs something other than water throughout the day you can contact the school nurse to discuss it. 3

4 Snacks are welcomed in the classroom for birthdays or parties. Make sure to bring enough snacks for all of the children. Also, we do have some allergies so if possible please avoid bringing treats with peanuts. Also, we have the one to one rule; one healthy snack to one sweet or unhealthy snack. The school nor I will provide snacks for your child throughout the day. Playground Rules: 1. Students will stay in assigned fenced area and leave gates closed at all times. 2. During recess students are to stay on the playground. No one may enter the building unless they have a pass from the playground supervisor. 3. Students will solve problems in a respectable manner. 4. Students will use appropriate language. 5. Students will use playground equipment properly and safely. 6. Students will keep clean and dry. 7. Students will keep rocks, sticks, wood chips, sand, snowballs, etc. on the ground. 8. No food or beverage is allowed on the playground. 9. Toys brought from home must stay in the classroom. 10. No tackle football is allowed. If playground rules are broken the student will get a verbal warning the first time. If they break a rule again then they will have to sit out/or walk the perimeter for the rest of the recess. If there are reoccurring problems on the playground logical consequences will follow. If the child is in a physical fight then both parties will be taken to the office. Communication A Daily Planner will accompany the students home every night. The students are responsible for filling out the planners. The planner will include homework assignments, assignment due dates, and important dates. 4

5 The Tuesday Express will be sent out every Tuesday. It will include school information and a classroom newsletter. Parents need to remember to sign the envelope before it is returned to school on Wednesday. The Daily Bulletin, Event Calendar, etc. can be obtained on the school web page at Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled in the fall and spring of each school year to discuss student progress. I am available for phone calls (school ext Home before 8:00 p.m.), visits or s (ashon.mitchek.@cheyennesd.net) anytime during the school year. If you send a text, please identify yourself. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I typically only check my s and phone during my plan time (7:50-8:50) so if you need immediate feedback, please contact the office. Assignments Assignments need to be turned in at the end of each class hour or at the beginning of the next day. If a student is struggling with the concept he/she needs to contact me before the next class period. I am available immediately after school and from 7:30-7:50 each morning to give extra help. Please check the Parent Portal to make sure that your child has turned in all their assignments. Homework Procedure: Every night your child will have homework. It is to READ! The students will need to post to the class blog once a week. It is due every Monday answering questions from the book they are reading. If you do not have the proper technology to do this, the school does and we can arrange a time for them to complete the work. Also, at times there will be writing homework as well. All homework should be written in planner. If the student is absent, I will send a homework sheet home and special folder outlining what they had missed that day. The students will need to turn their completed work in within a week of their absence. If it is not turned in within a week it will be a 0. 5

6 Grading Daily work is meant to be used as a practice to learn a skill. Students will receive a participation grade for most of these assignments. Grades will be taken on the assessments. This means that fewer grades will be taken so it is imperative that the students do their best on the daily assignments to ensure understanding of the concept being taught. If a test grade is below a 70% students may retake the test, after reviewing the content again, for a better grade. Students must inform the teacher if they wish to retake the test. Grades will be posted on the school web site. The Grading Scale is: % = A 90-80% = B 80-70% = C 70-60% = D Attendance Attendance will be taken at 7:50 a.m. each day. If a student enters the classroom after this time, he/she will be considered tardy and will be sent to the office to get a tardy slip. If a student is continually tardy, parental contact will be made to ensure that the student is on-time. Bathroom Usage The students will have the opportunity to use the bathroom during independent work time, not during classroom instruction. Cell Phones Cell phones may be kept in the student s backpack but they must not be heard or seen during the school year. If a cell phone goes off in class or is seen by a teacher, the phone will be confiscated and the student will receive a day of inschool suspension. 7 Before/After School The students are allowed in the building at 7:20 a.m. Students are to go to the cafeteria where they can eat breakfast or wait until the bell rings. The students will be released at the end of the day at 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Unless they have a prior arrangement with a teacher or school employee, the students need be out of the building by 4:15. Classroom Schedule: To be determined (this is a tentative outline) 7:50 11:35 5 th grade reading writing (specials will be during this time) 12:30 3:00 5 th grade math and science 3:00 4:00 social studies Classroom Parties: List of classroom parties: Halloween Christmas Valentines PARCC/CMAS/ end of year The students will actively plan their party and be responsible for their part.for birthday parties, the children are welcomed to bring treats for everyone. The time for the party will be determined later. Overview of Subjects: Reading We have a new reading series called benchmark literacy. It is well aligned to the modified state standards. We will use this to do a whole group lesson, then break into small groups where there will be guided reading, word work, and silent reading. Then the students will be engaged in participating in literature circles focused around grade level novels that are different genres. I hope to do a novel a month. 7

8 Writing We will be using the program Every Child a Writer which we have done for two years now. This program will have the students writing every day. They will be in differentiated groups in order to help increase their writing ability. Our new reading series also ties writing into it and responding to what you read. Also grammar will be covered at this time. Social studies I will use a social studies series called My World. This series comes with an interactive workbook that will engage students. It will be supplemented with other activities, projects, and stations. The students will also engage in close reading during social studies through an interactive notebook with passages. Math and science will be taught by the very capable hands of Mrs. Osborn. Any questions regarding those subjects should be directed towards her. School polices regarding medication; Consult the school handbook for information. Students cannot bring medication to school at any time and self-administer it. This includes cough drops. School polices regarding visitation: Consult the school handbook for information. Feel free to stop in and visit, but please check into the office first. School bus policies: Consult the school handbook for information. Remember, riding the school bus system is a privilege and proper behavior needs to be shown on any school vehicle.
