1 Honors Pre-Calculus Syllabus Ms. Seigle Room 118 Locust Grove High School Wildcats COURSE DESCRIPTION & UNITS: Pre-Calculus focuses on standards to prepare students for a more intense study of mathematics. The critical areas organized in eight units delve deeper into content from previous courses. The study of circles and parabolas is extended to include other conics such as ellipses and hyperbolas. Trigonometric functions are introduced and developed to include inverses, general triangles and identities. Matrices provide an organizational structure in which to represent and solve complex problems. Students expand the concepts of complex numbers and the coordinate plane to represent and operate upon vectors. Probability rounds out the course using counting methods, including their use in making and evaluating decisions. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations. August December January May Unit 1: Conics Unit 5: Trigonometric Functions Unit 2: Matrices Unit 6: Trigonometry of General Triangles Unit 3: Vectors Unit 7: Trigonometric Identities Unit 4: Introduction to Trigonometric Functions Unit 8: Probability Unit 9: Introduction to Calculus (time-permitting) COURSE STANDARDS: A complete list of standards for this course is available on my schoolwires page, accessible through the following link and/or QR Code: TEXTBOOK & RESOURCES: There is not a textbook for this course; instead, electronic sources will be utilized. Students are encouraged to BYOT (bring their own wi-fi accessible technology) daily. If your child does not have access to such technology, please let me know as soon as possible so that I may make other arrangements for him/her. GRADING: Assessments will be graded using a percentage-correct method. You must show all work (even if you use a calculator) to ensure full credit is received for correct answers. Students will receive progress reports throughout the year; however, credit for successful completion of the course will not be awarded until the end of the school year. Letter grades will be assigned according to a student s current average in the course, and will include the county-issued (5) honors points: A = B = C = D = F = 69 or below Assessments will generally follow these categories: Classwork / Homework 15% Quizzes 20% Tests/Projects 45% Exam Determined by County (~20% of average)

2 GRADING POLICIES: All work must be completed in pencil. Late assignments will be accepted for a maximum of half credit only You must show all work (even if you use a calculator) to ensure full credit is received for correct answers. Assessments are meant to gauge the level of mastery within a given time frame. For this reason, if a major unit test grade is higher than its corresponding quiz, the test grade can replace the quiz grade because it would demonstrate an increase in the level of mastery within the allowable time frame. Note: missed quizzes will not be made up; instead, the corresponding unit test grade will also be used for the missed quiz grade. Out-of-School Suspension (OSS) may prevent a student from making up work missed during the suspension. A student who has been absent is responsible for meeting with his teachers to determine any missed work and arrange to complete same. Mid-Year Assessment (December) and Final Exam (May): The mid-year assessment and final exam are cumulative. I highly recommend periodically reviewing past material so you are not overwhelmed reviewing at the end of the semester or at the end of the year. Student Learning Objective Assessments: In place of a state-wide test, students in GSE Honors Pre-Calculus will take the Student Learning Objective Assessments (SLOs) two times during the year. The pre-assessment will be administered in August/September, and the post-assessment will be administered in April/May. SUPPLIES: Notebook: Pencils: Paper: Calculator: Technology: Students should utilize a 3-ring binder for this class with (4) dividers labeled: FFM, CW & HW, Quizzes, and Tests. All assignments must be completed in pencil. (Note: #2 pencils will be required for assessments involving bubble sheets.) Loose leaf notebook paper (college or wide ruled). Graphing paper may be helpful, as well. Class sets of TI 84 Pus graphing calculators and TI-Nspire CX Handhelds will be used throughout the year for inclass work. For at-home work, students will need to either purchase* their own graphing calculator or gain access to Desmos, a free graphing calculator which can be found on the Internet or downloaded as a free Apple app. *Please consult the Math Department or potential college before purchasing an expensive calculator! We will frequently use technology as a tool for learning. Students with personal, internet-capable devices (Wi-Fi) should bring them to class with the understanding that they must adhere to the school and teacher s BYOT Agreement at all times. Ear Buds and Thumb Drive (or similar portable storage devices) are encouraged, as well. DONATIONS: Tissue and Hand Sanitizer are always needed. If you are able to donate for the class at any point during the year, I would greatly appreciate it! Dry Erase Markers for our class set of individual whiteboards would be useful for your child, as well. CLASSROOM RULES: 1.) Be on time 2.) Be prepared 3.) Listen and pay attention 4.) 3 ARRIVING TO CLASS DURING CLASS LEAVING CLASS MISSING CLASS OUTSIDE OF CLASS If the No devices sign is displayed, place your device in your assigned packet at the front of the room to avoid unnecessary distractions. Arrive on time, with all materials, be seated, and begin working on FFM (First Five Minutes Activity). If any supplies are needed, please promptly handle during this time. - Mechanical Pencils can be purchased if needed for $ Non-mechanical pencils can be purchased if needed for $ Graphing Calculators, if available, should be signed out Have due assignments out for teacher s review. Students generally do not need to ask permission to sharpen pencil, visit tissues and/or trashcan, use stapler, etc, unless doing so would obviously disrupt the class. Raising hands to ask/answer questions is helpful in maintaining order; however, class conversations will still occur. Thus, it will be important for students to be respectful towards classmates and teacher, and be cognizant of others both contributing and listening to the conversation. Although we will frequently work in small groups during class, students will be assessed based on their individual mastery level. Recognizing where additional help may be needed and requesting same requires a maturity level expected of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Students are expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner at all times as outlined in the Locust Grove Student s Handbook. Discipline for unacceptable behavior and tardies will be dealt with as described in the handbook. LGHS does not permit students to leave class during the first 15 minutes or the last 15 minutes of each class period. This shall be referred to as the 15 minute rule. Be sure to visit restroom and water fountain between classes. If the situation warrants his/her leaving class outside of the 15 minute rule, student shall then use one of his/her (8) passes for the year. At the conclusion of the year, unused passes will be rewarded as a means of encouraging maximum instruction time and appreciating preparedness. Students are responsible for determining, requesting, completing, and submitting all missed work outside of class time. Unit quizzes will not be made up. Instead, the summative unit assessment grade will replace the missed formative unit quiz. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, whether by general subject or more specific unit. Students and parents must understand that additional help outside of class time may be needed in order to master the standards in this course. My office hours will be posted outside of my door (room 118) each week as well as on my schoolwires page on LGHS s site ( ). 6 Parents of Mathematics Students, LOCUST GROVE HIGH SCHOOL GRAPHING CALCULATOR AGREEMENT *** FOR CLASSROOM USE ONLY *** Successful mastery of the standards in Honors Pre-Calculus requires the occasional-to-frequent use of a graphing calculator. Locust Grove High School will provide a TI-84 Plus and/or a TI-Nspire CX graphing calculator for your child to use in the course. Students are expected to use school calculators for their intended purpose. Students caught playing games on the calculators or drawing on the calculators will be dealt with as a discipline issue. If the graphing calculator is damaged by the student, you will be expected to pay for damages, including possible replacement of the calculator. Acceptable means through which to replace calculators include either purchasing a TI-84 Plus or TI-Nspire CX calculator (depending on which was damaged or lost) and bringing it in its original packaging to the math teacher, or paying $150 (TI-84 Plus) or $175 (TI-Nspire CX) to Locust Grove High School for replacement. You may choose to buy a graphing calculator for your child, assuring that s/he will always have one to use at school or at home. If you select this option, specific recommendations may be made by contacting your child s math teacher. Though many personal, Wi-Fi enabled, handheld devices have graphing calculator apps, students may not be allowed to use such devices during class, and will not be allowed to use such devices during assessments; in fact, only approved graphing calculators, if any, will be allowed for use on assessments.
