1 CJ 103 CRIMINAL JUSTICE: INTRODUCTION TO ACJ Course Syllabus This syllabus document is a binding contract between the student and instructor of this course. It contains important information about how the course is designed to work, course requirements, student and instructor responsibilities, grading information, contact information and other helpful information that will help you be successful in this online course. All students are required to read this syllabus and become familiar with the contents. CONTACT INFORMATION: Instructor: Jayna Pettersen Phone Number: (253) / emergency message at (253) (Cindy Bassage) Address: jpettersen@pierce.ctc.edu Office Location: Cascade Building Room 387 Office Hours : Mondays & Thursdays, 8:00am-4:30pm REQUIRED TEXT(S): NONE. REQUIRED TECHNOLOGY: You must have reliable access to a computer with speakers and Internet access. It will be very hard to complete this class if you only have access to a computer through the Pierce College computer labs. You really need to have a computer of your own that you don t need to share with anyone. High speed Internet access is also best, if possible, but not required. Most content in this course is accessible with mobile devices. **Important! You may need to listen to audio recordings for activities and assignments in this course. A USB microphone /headset OR speakers on your computer are required to be able to hear the audio and video recordings. RECOMMENDED BROWSERS AND OPERATING SYSTEMS: For best results, the latest versions of these web browsers are recommended: Firefox Chrome Safari Internet Explorer For best results the following operating systems are recommended: Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8, on a PC Mac OSX on a MAC. 1
2 Older operating systems do not work well in this course. OTHER TECH TIPS: Have a backup plan for computer crashes, Internet downtime or software problems. Keep copies of all your work on a flash drive or CD in case of computer disk failure. Virus protection for your computer is highly recommended. RECOMMENDED SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS: You will submit most of your written projects in a Word.doc or.docx format unless otherwise requested. The following applications can save documents in.doc format: PC Users: Microsoft Word 2007, 2010 or 2013 (MS Office Suite) Mac Users: iwork Pages application will save to.doc format. MS Office for Mac is also available Google Docs free with your Pierce student gmail account Open Office free download available at COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an introduction to the elements needed to be successful in the Criminal Justice two year and certificate(s) programs at Pierce. This course will prepare students for the intricacies of student success at Pierce College and prepare them for their culminating portfolio project in CJ 280. STUDENT OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course students should be able to: 1. Identify areas and person in college resource departments. 2. Create a flexible educational plan that can be changed upon college and individual needs. 3. Create portfolio template that will address FAK, PTO and CAO of individual identified Associate or Certificate(s). 4. Demonstrate proficiency in PowerPoint. Professional Technical Outcome (PTO): Graduates will communicate appropriately based on topic, audience and situation. Core Ability Outcome (CAO): Information Competency: Graduates will be able to seek, find, evaluate and use information and employ informational technology to engage in lifelong learning. 2
3 COURSE ASSESSMENTS/ASSIGNMENTS: 10 online assignments each worth 10 points Major Assignment: Educational Plan Major Assignment: COA/PTO PowerPoint presentation Total Available Points 100pts. 200 pts 200 pts 500 pts. There are multiple assignments due each week. The last day to turn in work online will be stated online. You will receive 25% reduction in score for any assignments turned in late. This means late from the weekly due date as well as the stated date online. GRADING PROCEDURES: To use this course as a core Criminal Justice class in any of the Criminal Justice degrees or certificates you must earn a minimum of a 2.0 GPA. Your grade is determined by total points earned on all assignments listed in this syllabus. 4 INSTRUCTOR RESPONSIBILITY STATEMENT: As the facilitator of this course, I am committed to developing a quality-learning environment, whereby each student will be challenged to learn and grow personally and professionally. If learning is not occurring, please contact me immediately so we can problem-solve the situation. My desire is for continuous improvement in the course, in myself, and in each student. My contact information is listed on page one of this syllabus. Communication/Feedback Expectations: As a student, you can expect that I will respond to your within 48 hours and will grade assignments/tests/quizzes within four (4) days. Please contact me immediately if you have not heard from me within these timelines. COURSE POLICIES: NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL AND THEN WILL BE SUBJECT TO A 25% DEDUCTION: 1. All papers, unless specified, will be typed in 12 pt. font, double-spaced, one-inch margins on all four sides and have a cover sheet. 2. Student s name will appear only on the cover page. 3. Each page will be numbered (except cover page). 4. Paper length must be strictly followed in order to receive full credit. 5. Any personal situations or conflicts that occur during the course should be brought to the attention of the facilitator as soon as possible. 6. Plagiarism will result in an automatic 0.0 for this class and a letter of such put in the student s academic file with the school. 7. Attendance in this class is important and is a direct representation of me as an employee. I will always have great attendance, even in an online class. Your attendance is a binding commitment in the CJ program that will directly impact your grade. It is also one of the ways employers evaluate references of students. HELPFUL TIPS AND STRATEGIES: Attend class each week and check into the Canvas classroom. I post weekly Announcements and it is your responsibility for knowing when things may have changed. Create study groups with students that have similar availability schedules. Be proactive, there are many assessments in this course. You need to stay on top of them. It is very easy to get behind if you put off doing your work each week. 4
5 Ask for help early, if you need it. Ask your classmates or ask your instructor. Realize this course is only for a few weeks, not a lifetime. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish in a short period of time by making this class a priority and focusing on completing your work. Extra credit opportunities are available for this class. This is an opportunity that you should always take advantage of.
