1 IB Precalculus X4B Jeaneen Aldridge Atherton High School phone: Textbook: IB Diploma Programme: Mathematics Standard Level Course Companion, by Buchanan, Fensom, Kemp, LaRondie, and Stevens; Oxford University Press Class website: Course Description International Baccalaureate Standard Level Mathematical Methods is a two-year course taken as IB Precalculus during the junior year followed by IB Calculus senior year. The goal of the course is to provide students with a solid mathematical foundation for university level mathematics by introducing a broad range of topics. Graphing calculators are used extensively in the development and application of many of the topics covered. Emphasis is placed on developing the student s ability to apply and fluently communicate mathematics. Course Content (to be covered over two years) Topic 1: Algebra Sequences and Series Exponents and Logarithms Binomial Theorem Topic 2: Functions and Equations Inverse and composite functions, domain and range, graphing functions on a GDC Transformations of graphs Reciprocal Function Quadratic Function Exponential Function Solving equations graphically and analytically Topic 3: Circular Functions and Trigonometry Radian measure, arcs and sectors Unit circle definitions of sin, cos, and tan Basic identities and relationships between trig ratios Trigonometric functions Trigonometric equations in finite intervals Applications of trigonometry in triangles Topic 4: Vectors Two and three dimensional vectors Scalar product of two vectors Lines in the plane and three dimensional space Coincident and parallel lines; determining the point of intersection of two lines Topic5: Statistics and Probability Concepts of population, sample, random sample, discrete and continuous data Presentation of data and working with grouped data

2 Statistical measures of central tendency and dispersion and their interpretations Cumulative frequency Linear correlation of bivariate data Outcomes of complementary, combined, independent, conditional, and mutually exclusive events Discrete random variables and their probability distributions Binomial and normal distributions Topic 7: Calculus Limits, derivatives, and convergence Chain rule, product rule, and quotient rule Anti-differentiation with indefinite integration and boundary conditions Kinematic problems Graphical behavior of functions Portfolio: two components consisting of a modeling project and an investigation Formal IB Assessments Two types of formal assessments are used to determine IB diploma scores: (1) The Internal Assessment: a portfolio consisting of two entries. Portfolio scores are submitted in February of the senior year. (2) The External Assessment: 2 timed papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. A calculator is not allowed on Paper 1. A graphing calculator is required for Paper 2. Both exams are given at the end of the senior year. Methodology A variety of teaching strategies will be used throughout the year. All require active student participation. Class activities include lecture and note taking, guided practice, cooperative learning, discussions, modeling real world events, and discovery learning. Students work both individually and in small groups. 3 Student Evaluation Grading Scale Forms of Assessment A % - Tests B % - Quizzes, Graded Assignments, Homework, C Math Notebook D % - Midterm, Final and Internal Assessments U below 60 Tests: These are typically worth 100 points. You can expect a test about every three weeks. If you are unable to take a test due to an excused absence, you will need to make arrangements to make up the test after school within one week. The best way to prepare for tests is by being an active participant in completing your daily work and homework. Being an active participant means taking time to make sure your answers are correct, addressing any mistakes, and seeking additional help on any skills and concepts that continue to cause you difficulty. Homework : Expect about 30 to 60 minutes of homework every night. Homework (always due the following day) will be collected and graded on a random basis. Late home work is not accepted for credit. All homework assignments must be completed and kept in your math notebook for your notebook grade. These are my homework expectations: You are expected to attempt every problem and clearly show all work. If you do not understand a problem, you are expected to ask about it in class and seek extra help if needed. You are expected to check your answers, correct any mistakes, and make sure all problems are complete. You can access complete worked solutions at this website: (I will post a link on the class website.) Assignments are to be numbered and kept in a three ring binder that I call your math notebook, readily available for use on future course work. Math Notebook: You will keep all course work (notes, homework, quizzes, tests, etc.) organized in a three ring binder. The organization process is simple; we will just number each assignment as we do it and keep them in numerical order. You can find a weekly list of assignments at my website. Your math notebook will stand as a compilation of all the hard work and effort you put forth in this course over the year. Keeping your materials organized will help you maintain a sense of continuity and prepare for exams. You can see where we ve been, where we re going, and how the topics fit together. At the end of the year, your notebook will be a good resource for future math courses. Math Notebooks will be collected and graded once every six weeks.

4 Makeup Work No late work will be accepted; assignments are due at the beginning of class. You must have an excused absence to receive credit for makeup work. All assignments are posted in a class notebook and kept the gray file cabinet in the back of the room. Assignments are also posted online at my website. According to school board policy, students have as many days as they are absent plus one to turn in the work. As noted above, a one week window is given for tests and quizzes to be made up because they must be done after school, during lunch, or study skills. It is the student s responsibility to make sure that work is completed and turned in within the allotted amount of time. Conduct Expectations 1. Come to class prepared and on time Being prepared means bringing your homework, notebook, textbook, paper, pencil and calculator every day. You are given a one-minute notice before class begins. You are expected to be in your seat ready to begin class when the tardy tone sounds. Please have your homework out and start working on the warm-up exercise right away. 2. Show respect to others You are expected to conduct yourself in a manner appropriate to the classroom setting. Be polite to each other, help take care of classroom property, and leave your work area clean and the end of class. 3. Stay on task and participate in classroom activities During your time in this classroom, you are expected to give your full attention to the study of mathematics. 4.
