1 Pierce College at Joint Base Lewis-McChord Course Syllabus Course Dates: April 2 to June 1, 2018 COURSE TITLE: Introduction to Communication ABBREVIATION: CMST& 101 CREDIT HOURS: 5 INSTRUCTIONAL HOURS: 50 INSTRUCTOR: Kathy Brinez INSTRUCTOR INTRODUCTION: Being a military spouse since 1976 (now of a retiree), I understand how precious your off-duty (or family) time is, and I admire you for taking on this academic challenge. I have taught for Pierce College since In addition to this class, I also teach other English, humanities, and reading skill courses on-line. Besides a masters degree in education (reading instruction), I have completed a masters in humanities. Now I m back in school taking communications classes. Therefore, as an instructor, I support you, and as a student, I empathize with you! COMMUNICATIONS: All course communications will be through the Canvas course inbox. PREREQUISITE: none CATALOG DESCRIPTION: An investigation into communication theory including verbal and nonverbal communication. Communication barriers and processes will be studied. The student will also make presentations before the class. REQUIRED TEXT AND MATERIALS: This course uses Open Educational Resources, OER, meaning all material will be made available to you at no cost. I will provide instructions on accessing the material in the course modules. COURSE GUIDANCE: 1. Course Expectations: As a student, you can expect that I will respond to your within 48 hours and will grade assignments/tests/quizzes within four (4) days. Exceptions will be announced in advance. Please contact me immediately if you have not heard from me within these timelines. 2. Introductions: Students are expected to post a short (one paragraph) introduction to the course Discussions Area during the first week of the course. I have guidelines within the course for the introduction located in the first Module. 3. Discussions: This course may have discussions as part of the curriculum. Students may also desire to discuss topics with other students in an unscheduled manner. I, as part of the course, may publish discussion questions/topics and require your input. Should you desire to hold a discussion with other students enrolled in your course, you may be authorized to create your own discussion topics.
2 4. Course Incompletes: are not automatic and must be requested from me. Incompletes must be approved and arranged with me. 5. Student Responsibilities: Please remember that it is your responsibility to notify me of major changes in your circumstances (e.g. deployment) that affect your ability to complete all course work within the course timeline. 6. Plagiarism software: Please go to following link to learn about what constitutes plagiarism: 7. Etiquette: Etiquette for classroom and online courses is the same. Treat others as you would like to be treated, respectfully and compassionately. 8. Communications Standards: This course is a college class. All communications to your instructor or other students will be written at the college level. Communications for classroom and online courses are the same. Treat others as you would like to be treated, respectfully and compassionately. We will use standard English language and not the abbreviated, short-hand of texting or online communications. Spelling and grammar should be checked prior to submitting assignments or sending messages. STUDENT OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to: 1. Identify parts of the communication model 2. Explain the differences between communication contexts such as intrapersonal, interpersonal and small group. 3. Explain the role of self in shaping communication choices 4. Analyze the role of perception in the communication process 5. Identify factors that affect communicating with persons of different cultures 6. Demonstrate knowledge of the basic components and characteristics of language 7. Define and identify nonverbal codes and their functions 8. Identify and explain how reasoning affects communication 9. Acquire empathic listening techniques 10. Understand reasons we seek relationships 11. Describe how roles and norms are developed 12. Acquire skills in conflict management and group climate development COURSE REQUIREMENTS: The course is divided into nine (9) modules. Each module will contain the following: 1. Required readings 2. Web links 3. Open book quiz 4. Journal assignment (see below) 5. Discussion topic (see below) ON WRITING YOUR JOURNALS (Nine (9) Journals, 450 points): 1. Employ ethical concerns and values as you examine each of the questions. 2. Your journals should double-spaced, font 12-point and 1-2 pages in length. 3. Your journals should be sent using the assignments icon (check resources folder for uploading information). Identify your resources or consulting authors when you use them. A direct quote of another author should be placed in quotation marks. 4. Please save your journals as word doc or docx or in rtf (rich text format) before uploading into assignment.
3 DISCUSSIONS (Nine (9) posts, 270 points): The discussion questions within the modules are designed to allow extra development of discipline s reasoning through the voices of fellow students. Positive participation will improve your and your classmates learning. Please keep comments relevant and appropriate in content and tone. General discussions are also available for students to interact for study helps, ideas for writing, and the like. GRADING: Each assignment and assessment will be given a specific point value.
