4 Project Brief JCB Loadalls are the worlds number 1 telescopic handler used all over the world in agriculture, construction and even the military The main part of a Loadall is the telescopic boom, a hydraulically powered arm that can lift massive weights to heights of up to 20m In this project, you will make your own Loadall boom, with hydraulics and motors to lift as much weight as you can Lots of different attachments can be added to the end of the boom (such as forks, buckets or grabs) that allow the machine to perform different functions

5 Project Brief This is an engineering project. Engineers solve practical problems by applying mathematical and scientific knowledge To make the telescopic boom you will use many engineering skills: You will learn about forces and levers so that the boom can raise weights You will use hydraulics (the syringes) to move the boom arm up and down You will use electronics to wire a motor which moves the boom back and forth You ll use design skills to make your own attachment to put on the end of the boom

7 Team Roles For this project, assign each member of the team one of the following roles: Focused Role Description Group Leader Group Secretary Coordinator Implementer Lead your group to success by assessing progress towards the team goal and keeping the team on track. Leaders are responsible for getting all team members to participate and for making sure they all understand the project. Collect and share the information discussed during the team work. Create a written record of work being done, write out solutions, keep copies of each members work and prepare the materials for final project submission. Make sure the team is on track to meet deadlines and complete the project on time. Take the ideas of the group and make an achievable plan out of them. Makes sure the plan is carried out efficiently. Innovator Motivator Challenge the current ideas. Encourage new ideas and help the team work in new interesting directions. Drive the team toward the goal at all times. Make sure that all team members are focused and happy.

8 Gantt Chart A Gantt Chart is a way of showing when you plan to do each part of a project It allows you to visualise the start time, duration, and end time of each task It shows the team if the project is on track All the tasks are sorted in the order in which they will be done on the left axis Each task should be done by the end time of that task Tasks can overlap. This should only be done if you can actually do more than one task at a time Example Gantt Chart

10 Project Familiarisation Have a first look at the kits Don t lose anything! See if you can match the items on the kit list with the actual parts in the kit See if you can work out what some of the parts are used for Can you spot what all the items are in the diagram below? Try to work out how you would build some of the model

11 Questions Look at the example Gantt chart below: 1) Why are Gantt charts useful? 2) When does task 6 begin? 3) What tasks finish before task 7 starts? 4) How long does task 3 take to complete?

12 Answers 1) A Gantt chart allows you to plan out your project and visualise how long each task will take. 2) Task 6 begins on the 27-May 3) Tasks 1, 2, 3 and 4 finish before Task 7 4) Task 3 takes 6 days (starts 23 May finishes 29 May)
