4 Introduction EiMTV offers students a fun and interesting way to practise English as well as offering an insight into different aspects of British life. EiMTV includes eight programmes, divided into four sections as detailed below. Each programme corresponds to two sequential units in the English in Mind Student s Book, but can also be used alongside any course of a similar level. This pack contains the EiMTV DVD/Video and booklet, including worksheets and teaching notes. Programmes The Mag is a magazine-style programme which follows two presenters as they travel around Britain in search of interesting people and places. The programmes are freestanding, fun and informative and cover a diverse range of topics. It s All About Me is a two-part documentary that looks at different lifestyles by focusing on the daily lives of people with interesting jobs or hobbies. Life Swap is a two-part reality show where two people live each other s lives for a day, learning about the other person s hobbies, skills and jobs. The Hub is a two-part drama based around a performing arts club in Britain. It follows the daily dilemmas and adventures of a group of teenagers as they take part in acting, singing and dance classes. The Mag, It s All About Me and Life Swap all feature real people talking about their real lives. The Hub is the only programme that uses actors. Worksheets For each programme there is a worksheet containing a wide variety of tasks to develop students comprehension and language skills. They are divided into the following sections: Before you watch This task is designed to stimulate students interest in the topic or provide them with any challenging vocabulary they may need to understand the programme. While you watch These activities demand more detailed comprehension and practice of the key language items. After several viewings and completing this section, students should have a more detailed understanding. After you watch This task extends the topic of the programme and gives students some free language practice. Some of these activities could be extended into mini-projects if time permits. Recommendation It is advisable to let students watch the whole programme before introducing the worksheets. The danger of going straight 4

5 into the activities is that students may concentrate more on the worksheet than on the programme itself. Be sure to give students plenty of time to read the tasks before viewing begins. Asking students to watch a programme and look at a worksheet simultaneously challenges their ability to multi-task. Teaching notes These notes provide background information and offer suggestions for extension activities. They show how each programme relates to the English in Mind course, indicating unit and exercise correlation, for example Unit 4.2 refers to Unit 4 Exercise 2. All the activities are explained and an answer key is provided. Full video scripts are provided at the back of the booklet. Timings are offered for each section/scene: DVD followed by video. Using the DVD/Video In order to take full advantage of recycling the language covered in the English in Mind course, it is recommended that you use the corresponding worksheets. However, if you decide to use the DVD/Video without the worksheets there are several activity types you could use. Prediction pause the video periodically and ask students to guess what will happen next. The Hub and Life Swap lend themselves well to this type of task. What can you see? video brings a wealth of images into the classroom. By pausing the video and using the still picture as though it were a poster you can introduce new vocabulary to the class. Viewers and listeners students work in pairs facing each other, with one member of the pair facing the TV and the other with their back to the TV. The viewer tells the listener what is happening and gives a running commentary. This can be done with the sound off or on. Rewrite the ending after watching a programme, rewind to a minute before the end. Tell the students that they are the scriptwriters and the producers now want them to write a new ending. This would work well for The Hub. Dubbing watch a section of video with no sound a couple of times and ask students to write their own script. Then replay and ask students to act as dubbers and read their script in time with the programme. Dictogloss this task is suitable for higher levels. Play a section of a programme two or three times and ask students to listen very carefully. Then put students into small groups and ask them to reconstruct the text from what they remember as a group. Using the video scripts The video scripts can be used as the basis for extra activities such as: Jigsaw task photocopy a relevant section/scene. Cut up the dialogue and asks students to either reorder the conversation or decide who says what. Role play ask students to act out or base an invented role play on a relevant section/scene from the script. 5

8 It s All About Me: Entertaining Food Programme overview SUMMARY This programme is about a professional chef called Elaine Day and her company Entertaining Food. If you have access to a computer, you can show students the company website: In the UK there are many catering companies who prepare food for special events and parties. Nowadays there are more and more people who use catering companies for dinner parties at home. LANGUAGE This programme corresponds to Units 1 and 2 of English in Mind Level 1. Grammar: Present simple positive, negative and questions (Units 1 and 2) Before you watch This task gets students thinking about their favourite food. Put students in pairs to ask each other questions about their favourite meals. Then ask a few students to tell the whole group about their partner s meal. While you watch 1 In the kitchen Section 1 introduces Elaine, the chef, and explains her job. Let students watch this section a couple of times. To extend this task, ask students to correct the false sentences or to make all the sentences negative. 9 2 At the farmers market TEACHING NOTES 1 This task practises present simple questions and short answers. Watch Section 2 a couple of times. Students then complete the questions and write short answers. To extend this task ask students to think of more questions about the programme so far. Ask students to complete the table then watch the section again to check their answers. Check students understand the meaning of all the words. To extend this task, ask students to discuss food they like and dislike. Then watch the chefs making the vegetable stock several times so students can circle the verbs they hear. Check that students understand all the verbs then ask them to work in pairs to describe how to make vegetable stock. They should use the verbs to help them.
