2 Murray Park School Job Description Lead Teacher of Science Title: Salary: Responsible to: Framework: Teacher of Science Main Pay Scale + TLR 2c Head of Subject (Science and ICT) To work within the framework of teachers pay and conditions, current legislation and the policies of the school. Duties as a Classroom Teacher Teaching in an agreed curriculum area Planning structured lessons that meet the needs of individual students Sharing plans and teaching resources with colleagues Maintaining records, marking and assessment of pupils work according to school and departmental policies, external examination and national curriculum requirements Reporting on pupils as required by the school policy and national curriculum requirements Using school procedures to maintain your teaching area/s to a standard that motivates pupils and meets health and safety requirements Following safe working practices in all your teaching and duty situations Supporting the tutorial system as required. Key Tasks To be responsible to the Head of Subject for teaching duties within the department curriculum area. To work in accordance with the school s Curriculum Policy Statement and the aims and objectives of the Science department. To teach in Key Stages Three and Four, responding to departmental policy, KS3 National Curriculum guidelines and KS4 syllabus. To liaise with other members of the department in the delivery of Science, undertaking a fair and equitable share of the work by helping to develop and prepare teaching materials for use within the department and cross-curricular themes as required. To maintain records, marking and assessment of pupils work according to the departmental assessment policy, National Curriculum requirements and Key Stage Four course requirements. To monitor progress of students and report to parents in line with school procedures for recording and reporting. To set and mark homework as indicated by the department and school homework timetable in accordance with the departmental homework policy.

3 To contribute to the organisation of displays of work within the school, and in particular to be responsible for provision of a motivating learning environment in an identified area of the department. To follow school procedures for maintaining the standards of furniture, fittings and equipment in your teaching areas. To attend departmental meetings, general school meetings and Parents meetings as appropriate. To be responsible for and follow adopted safe working practice in accordance with the latest Health and Safety regulations. To fulfil a role within the tutor system and actively support the work of heads of Year To participate in relevant INSET to enhance teaching effectiveness. In addition to the duties described in the generic teacher s job description the following are the main responsibilities of the post: Collaboration with the Head of Science and Computing and Progress Leaders and post holders to plan and implement curriculum change and innovation. Working with lead practitioners in order to lead the development of teaching and learning materials to support curriculum innovation. Supporting colleagues in implementing curriculum change. Supporting colleagues in developing their teaching practice. Working with colleagues to identify students who are at risk of underachieving in KS3 and KS4. Designing, resourcing and delivering intervention programmes at KS3 and KS4 to improve the rates of progress of underachieving students. Tracking the progress of students who had been at risk of underachieving and evaluating the effectiveness and impact of our intervention programmes. Attending meetings, conferences and keeping up-to-date with curriculum innovation; sharing these new ideas with the department. Co-ordinating and contributing to the department s enrichment programme. 5 Science and ICT Department The newly created Science and ICT department delivers separate Sciences at KS4, Computer Science and GCSE ICT as well as the combined Double Science GCSE qualification at KS4. At KS3 pupils follow the Exploring Science Scheme with assessments throughout the year. The seven Science staff cover the 3 Science disciplines at KS3, whilst the four ICT specialists cover all elements of ICT teaching. There is a formal end of KS3 test is carried out in May for all Y9 pupils. Both the Science and ICT Departments are currently successful and well-resourced departments. There are eight science laboratories all of which have access to audio-visual equipment and ICT provision. The department is also equipped with a set of 30 netbooks for our exclusive use. The eight laboratories are split between two buildings and three prep rooms. There are two technicians that support the technical provision within Science and two ICT technicians to support provision across the whole school. There are also seven ICT suites of 24 PCs across the school with two additional smaller suites and our Mac Suite of eight PCs. Teaching and learning have been the focus of staff development with many exciting initiatives being introduced into these areas. At KS4 Biology, Chemistry and Physics are taught by specialist teachers and all staff are able to teach a second Science discipline to KS4 level. All KS3 students have 3 hours a week learning Science, with an hour a week of ICT. All of KS4 have a double option of 5 hours a week of Science with ICT and Computer Science being part of the Options process and offered as a single option choice. The separate Sciences have are allocated an additional option place if students wish to follow this course. The Science and ICT Department values pupils participation in extra-curricular activities. We lead and take part in Enrichment days during the year that involve collaborative activities using Science, Information Technology and Engineering with the Design and Technology department. This is an exciting time to join the school and the department. The Science and ICT department forms a cohesive and supportive group and will welcome the input of an additional enthusiastic and innovative teacher. The successful candidate will find a culture of realistic self-evaluation within the department and subsequently a desire to constantly improve and push the boundaries of our performance. This is an excellent opportunity for a new teacher to work with a strong team to make a real impact upon pupil progress.
