If you have direct scheduling conflicts with my office hours and would like further help, please let me know. Course Description: This course covers the following topics: linear functions, systems of linear equations, polynomial functions, properties of exponents, factoring polynomials, and various functions such as exponential, rational, and radical. Other items may be included if time permits. Analysis of the previous topics will include verbal, graphical, numerical, and algebraic reasoning. Math 95 is a developmental math course designed to prepare you for Math 111 or Math 211. Credits earned by completing Math 95 apply to enrollment (eligibility) but do not apply toward a degree and satisfy no university or college requirement. The grade received in this course will not count toward your overall GPA. Course Goals: 1. Students will provide accurate explanations of information presented in mathematical forms PG1 and QL 2. Students will convert relevant information into various mathematical forms PG1 and QL 3. Students will draw reasonable and appropriately qualified conclusions from quantitative analysis of data PG1 and QL 4. Students will understand and use quadratic, rational, exponential, and radical families of functions, and develop modeling with these functions. CS 5. Students will understand basic transformations. --CS Prerequisite: MTH 70 with a grade of C- or better, or satisfactory score on Western Oregon University math placement test.
2 Required Materials: Text: Textbook: Elementary and Intermediate Algebra 4th Edition, Sullivan, Struve & Mazzarella 1. Purchased new. The book, together with access code to the online homework from the bookstore.. 2. Purchased online at This purchase gives you access to both the online text and the homework on MyMathLab. The online version of the text looks exactly like the actual text, page by page. The cost is about $100. You will also need access to the online homework, which is available through MyMathLab and requires: a. An access code or a credit card AND b. The Course code: For the 10am class: wiebe47062 For technical support, please contact the MML technical support line ( or visit ) Calculator use will not be permitted on quizzes or exams. There may be homework problems assigned in which a scientific calculator may be necessary; keep in mind that given less complicated numbers, you need to be able to work the problem without a calculator. Course Structure: The course will contain a mix of interactive lecture, individual/group problem solving, and time for questions from previous homework assignments. Reading the text: You will be expected to read each (assigned) section in your textbook. It is a good idea to briefly read the assigned section before class and then to carefully read the section before you start your homework. You might find it very helpful to write out the examples in the text as well as to just read the examples. If you carefully write out the examples and work out all of the steps you will find that you have a deeper understanding of the material. You may ask questions about the text both in class and during my office hours. 3 Homework/In-Class assignments. There will be a mix of handwritten assignments (10% of your grade) and online homework (20%). o If you miss class, it is your responsibility to acquire any homework assignments that you missed, but you will not be able to make up any in class activities or quizzes unless you have spoken with me before-hand and have a proper excuse. o Completing your homework in a timely fashion will be essential to your success in this course. You will find that if you do not do all of your homework, you will not succeed in learning the material covered in this course. o Your online homework is typically due the next class day after it is assigned. Quizzes. There will be homework quizzes throughout the term. No notecard is permitted on the quizzes. The quizzes are worth 10% of your grade. Exams. There will be two mid-terms throughout this course. Each one will be based off of material that has been covered in lectures, homework problems, and in-class assignments. Use of one handwritten 3x5 notecard is permitted on each exam. Attendance and completion of assignments are essential to being a successful test taker. Make-up exams are not allowed unless you have spoken with me beforehand and it is an unusual circumstance. Each exam is worth 20% of your grade, giving the exams a total weight of 40%. The Final. It will be cumulative, encompassing the material that will be covered throughout the term. You may use one handwritten 3x5 notecard on the final exam. The final is worth 20% of your grade. Late Work: All written assignments are due at the beginning of class. Late work will not be accepted unless you have o a documented emergency filed with the Student Affairs office and my agreement, or o a documented University Sanctioned Absence from class which you have reviewed with me, and devised a plan for, in advance of the absence. Skills Test: The Mathematics Department has stipulated that a "Basic Skills Test" for assessing competency in basic pre-algebra skills must be passed by all Math 95 students. Each Math 95 student must pass the Basic Skills Test by the end of week 10. A student who has passed the Basic Skills Test in one of the two prior terms does not need to take the Basic Skills Test; in other words, a passing score on the Basic Skills Test expires at the end of two academic terms (including fall, winter, spring and summer terms). If you have passed the Basic Skills Test before, please be sure to let your instructor know which term you passed as well as your instructor at the time. To pass, you must have an overall score of at least 75% and you must get both problems 1 and 2 correct (multiplication and division of whole numbers). Any student not passing the Skills Test by the deadline will receive an F in the course. This test MUST be passed in order to pass the class. No later than Day 3 of Week 1, the Skills Test will be taken in class; results will be given to students by Day 4 of Week 1. This is your one opportunity for the week (no make ups). Beginning week 2 (after the in-class attempt) retakes will be administered at drop-in group retake sessions in MNB 110 at the following times. (Retakes may be taken up to once per week). o Wednesday 9am o Thursday 12pm o Friday 10am YOU MUST PASS THE BASIC SKILLS TEST ON OR BEFORE FRIDAY OF DEAD WEEK. IF YOU DO NOT PASS, YOU WILL NEED TO RETAKE THE COURSE.
4 Tips for success: Attend class. Even if you think you already know the material, in class assignments and homework quizzes have a significant impact on your grade. Ask questions! Don t be afraid of failure or giving a wrong answer; its how we learn and we all experience it every day. We don t need to always have the right answer, but we need to at least try if we want to improve and become more effective. Get extra help whenever needed. There are several resources available to you: o My office hours, feel free to drop by whenever you have any questions regarding the course or anything that I can help you with. If my hours don t work for you, let me know and we can make an appointment for a different time. o Free Tutoring: There is free Math 95 tutoring in the Math Tutoring Center (HL 228). See for specific tutoring hours. Other tutors in the tutor center may also be able to help you with Math 95, but it is not guaranteed. You may find the tutoring center is a great place to sit and work, even if you don t have questions. If the center is busy, you may find nice areas to sit and study near the center (library, second floor) and then you can check in with the center tutors if you need help. o Each other! Study groups are a great way to bounce ideas off each other and see the material in a different light. Just be sure that you don t completely rely on each other for the answers, since that can actually cripple you and force you to become dependent. Completion of all assignments, both written and online. Successfully completing (and understanding) homework assignments will have a large impact on your exam scores, thereby raising your grade in more ways than one! Veterans and Active Military Personnel with special circumstances are welcome and encouraged to communicate these, in advance if possible, to the instructor. Appropriate Classroom Behavior: You are ultimately responsible for your own attendance and performance. Disruptive classroom behavior of any kind, such as talking during lecture or consistently coming to class late etc., is not appropriate. This prescribed conduct for all students is described in the University Catalog. In particular, academic dishonesty of any kind will not be tolerated, and will be reported to the university. Also, leave your cell phone off or on silent when you come to class. They are not to be used at all during class. If for some reason you absolutely need to be contacted (in some emergency situation), inform me before class and an arrangement can be made. Disability Services: If you have a disability for which you are or may be requesting an accommodation, you are encouraged to contact both your instructor and the Office of Disability Services, APSC 405, or at , as early as possible in the term. Students needing medical or mental health care can access the Student Health and Counseling Center by calling , ing at health@wou.edu, or by walking in to schedule an appointment. Incomplete Grades: An Incomplete can only be granted for a student who is passing a class and has a documented emergency that prevents them from completing the course, after Friday of the seventh week of class, which is the last day for dropping a course with W grade.
5 Attendance: Students are expected to attend each class. I regularly take roll or have a sign in sheet. If you are absent I do not need a written or verbal explanation. However, absences will result in the loss of points if they occur on days when graded classwork or tests are given. Wolf Connections System: If the instructor determines your performance in this class is placing you at academic risk, you may be referred to a member of the Student Success Team. A student success specialist will offer to work with you to address issues and develop a student success strategy. Regardless of whether a referral has or has not been made, you are ultimately responsible for tracking your own progress in this course.
