2 Introduction The KS4 Curriculum This is the KS4 Curriculum brochure and we hope that you find it informative, useful and accessible. The curriculum has undergone very significant changes over recent years due to the reform of the GCSE qualifications. We are offering a different range of subjects this year and more subjects will become available for your son in year 10 and 11. It has been the intention of all staff and governors at the school to produce a curriculum which is exciting, relevant and engaging. It is our hope and belief that we have achieved this. We are proud of our GCSE and progress results at Wheelers Lane, and will give you all the support and encouragement we can to enable you to do your best. Core Subjects All students have to follow a core curriculum of examination subjects. These are the subjects set out by the Government that all pupils study. This includes: English language English Literature Maths Biology Chemistry Physics Or: Combined science

3 English Baccalaureate You may have heard of a qualification called the English Baccalaureate. This is a standard introduced several years ago and often used by university to determine a breadth of academic rigour. It is not so much a new qualification, but rather a way of recognising that a student has achieved a grade 4 or 5 in a range of GCSE qualifications. English Maths Two sciences History or geography A modern foreign language Whilst making your options choices, we would advise you to think carefully about whether you will be able to achieve the English Baccalaureate. We think that it is a qualification that some employers and universities will look for. Therefore we would strongly recommend that all students consider continuing their study of history or geography and a modern foreign language.

GCSE English Language is a basic requirement for most college courses, university entry and employment.

6 Mathematics GCSE Edexcel 1MA1 The aims and objectives of the mathematics GCSE are to enable students to: Develop fluent knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts. Acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems. Reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences, and draw conclusions. Comprehend, interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms, appropriate to the information and context. The topics of study at KS4 are divided into Geometry & Measures, Number, Statistics & Probability, Algebra and Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change. Some aspects of these topics have been studied during KS3 and are now studied in more depth. The volume of subject content has increased as well as demand of content. Together these changes are designed to help students emerge from GCSE Maths with a level of confidence and fluency that will provide a genuine skill for the rest of their working lives.
