5 WHAT IS DIFFERENT FROM GCSE? Changes to friendship groups, as fewer subjects and new tutor groups. Demands in/ out of lessons (10 study periods per week, independent). Increased independence in curriculum self directed, project work, reading related articles on line, in library etc. Split teaching; most subjects will have 2 teachers. No detentions! But still follow up when work is not completed. Need to check s regularly. Deadlines longer term, not just next lesson. (Use diaries/ wall planners.)

7 MANAGING WORKLOAD 27 hours of contact time, over two weeks, for students taking three A Levels. 3 lessons set aside for independent study (one for each subject per fortnight.) = 30 hours per fortnight in school

8 MANAGING WORKLOAD In addition, the same amount of time (30 hours) should be spent on work outside of the classroom per fortnight. Study periods provide 20 hours of time in school for work per fortnight!

11 PART-TIME WORK? Part-time work can be very useful. Employment skills. Financial independence Recommend no more than 8 hours per week.

12 WHAT ARE THE SCHOOL S EXPECTATIONS? 1) Minimum GOOD commitment to learning in all subjects. Need to be self motivated if not, why not? Always comes back to the key question Why are we here? 2) Minimum 95% attendance across all subjects (and formtime). Punctuality and attendance in every lesson is monitored closely.

13 HOW HAVE A LEVEL COURSES CHANGED? Old A Levels AS Levels - taken at the end of Year 12. Students are tested on the content of the Year 12 course. Counts for 50% of A Level. A2 Levels - taken at the end of Year 13. Students are tested on the content of the Year 13 course. Counts for 50% of A Level. New A Levels A Levels - taken at the end of Year 13. Students are tested on the content of the Year 12 and Year 13 courses. Counts for 100% of A Level.

18 How is the tutorial programme organised? 19 Monday Assembly Once per fortnight, in the Lecture Theatre. A chance to communicate key messages, broaden your knowledge and understanding and listen to external speakers. Academic Reading Once per fortnight (see Friday!)

20 Tuesday Community How can the sixth form play a role in the wider community? To start with, each form group in Year 12 and Year 13 will organise and deliver a charity fundraising event that will raise money for the sixth form s nominated charity.

21 Wednesday Personal Development A programme designed to support students with the wider aspects of being a sixth former. This will include health and well-being, careers guidance, UCAS and safety.

22 Thursday Study Skills A programme designed to help students manage their studies and develop skills that will prove helpful in any subject. This will include Growth Mindset training, getting organised and what makes an effective learner.

23 Friday Academic reading Spend 20 minutes reading material to support your learning. A reading list has been provided. Be prepared to discuss what you are reading with your tutor and how it has helped to develop your knowledge and understanding.

24 WHAT ARE THE QUALITIES OF A GREAT STUDENT? 1. Possessing a growth mindset; you can be better. 2. Being flexible; some times are busier than others. 3. Having knowledge about academic courses and each syllabus. 4. Using good communication skills. 5. Having good time management skills. 6. Being able to organise yourself. 7. Having a clear sense of your goals. 8. Being independent. 9. Knowing when and how to seek help. 10.Strong commitment to completing your program of study.

25 HOW CAN PARENTS HELP? Ask questions; be aware of important dates and deadlines; listen. Talk through future plans but don t worry if your son/daughter is undecided or change their minds. Attend parents evenings. Let us know if you have big concerns. Mrs Curtis is a good point of contact!

26 TOP ADVICE FOR SUCCESS 1. Don't attempt to cram all your studying into one session. 2. Plan when you're going to study and study at the same time each day. 3. Each study time should have a specific goal. 4. Never procrastinate your planned study session. 5. Start with the most difficult subject first. 6. Make sure you're not distracted while you're studying. 7. Use study groups effectively. 8. Review your notes, schoolwork and other class materials over the weekend.
