1 HOST FAMILY GUIDELINES Guidelines and Expectations for Ensuring a Successful Experience School Year

2 INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PROGRAM HOST FAMILY GUIDELINES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Thank you for deciding to host an international student. We hope that this will be an incredible educational and cultural experience for your entire family. Please use the following guidelines to help your family have the best experience possible. There are many benefits to hosting an international student. This entire experience will be a valuable one for both your family and the student. Hosting a student can help families enrich their cultural perspective and can help students learn about American culture and develop their language skills. Please, always treat the students as a member of your family. Your family is their American family; therefore, feel free to communicate with your host student, set guidelines, and enforce rules the same way you would with your own children. We are sure that you and the student will learn a lot from this entire experience. A warm, friendly, and flexible approach to your student will ensure an enjoyable experience. EXPECTATIONS FOR HOST FAMILIES: Provide a warm, friendly environment Ensure your student s safety and well being Encourage students to speak English at all times Be sensitive to the cultural differences between the United States and your student s country of origin Communicate any concerns or problems that arise so as to help solve problems or misunderstandings HOST FAMILY RESPONSIBILITIES - ASSISTING STUDENTS UPON ARRIVAL: AIRPORT PICK UP: You will be provided pickup information for your student. Typically, students will arrive at Terminal B- Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX. When picking up the student, please have a sign with the student s name. It is always best to stand right outside of the ramp. SETTING GROUND RULES: Please establish a clear and moderate list of important rules (preferably in writing) that all members of your family would be required to follow. Review these rules with the student to make sure the guidelines are clear. Again, the success of this experience depends on how well the host family communicates with the student. Clear, concise, moderate rules will help you ensure that your host student succeeds. Please help your student by introducing them to your home in the following ways: Bathroom How to take a shower or bath (note: In most Asian countries, there is a drain in the bathroom floor and typically no shower curtain. Please explain to the student how to turn the shower on and off, hot and cold water. Also make sure that the student knows not to get water on the floor and how to use the shower curtains properly. In addition, you might also want to designate a place for the student to put his toiletries. Please provide basic toiletries such as soap, toilet paper, and so on. In addition, please explain the appropriate length of time for shower and baths. A student should be responsible for personal hygiene toiletries. Furniture The student s room should be a typical room for a high school boy. (Bed, dresser, lamp, desk). All students will have their own computers or laptops. 2 P a g e

3 Bedroom How to make their bed, which covers to sleep under, how often sheets are to be washed and by whom. You set the guidelines for how the bed is to be kept and how often sheets are to be washed and by whom. You set the guidelines for how the room is to be kept as well. Communication is very important. If the student knows what your expectations are, everything will work out. These expectations will need to be conveyed to your student upon arrival (First day is always the best). Laundry Who does the laundry and how often. Make laundry detergent available to the student. Please explain to the student the difference between soap and bleach. Kitchen How to use the microwave, oven, refrigerator, etc. As far as using the stove, it is up to you. In any case, please communicate with your student. Also explain to the student the importance of cleaning up after using the kitchen. Safety Issues Locking the doors, turning on and off the lights upon arrival and departure. If you feel it is necessary, you might provide the student with a set of house keys. Schedules Please discuss with your student when to get up, when to go to bed, when to take a shower. If you have a different schedule for during the week and one for weekends, please let the student know. Transportation- You should provide reasonable transportation. You set the guidelines with the student. It is always great if you can include the student in a lot of your family activities. This will be a wonderful opportunity for you to get to know the student better. It is also wonderful for the student to spend time with your family outside of the home. ACCOMADATIONS: Please provide the student with a private room for sleeping, studying and privacy. There should be a bed with linens, adequate storage such as a closet or dresser, adequate lighting, fire exit window, and a desk and chair. If you would like, the student can purchase his own sheets, pillows, and so on. You can discuss these needs with the student when he arrives. Again, including them in this process can be very beneficial and rewarding. INTERNET SERVICE: The student will probably connect to your internet. This is important to the student because he can communicate with his family via Skype. The internet will also be used for school assignments and so on. You set the guidelines for internet usage. Please help the student understand the importance of using the internet in a careful and responsible way. MEALS: The host family will provide three meals a day. BREAKFAST: Food needs to be available to the student. Please explain how students should help themselves. Note: some students will say they are not hungry or may not eat breakfast, but you should encourage them to do so. As far as specific food items, you can discuss preferences with the student. However, feel free to provide them with the food that you would provide your own family members. NOTE: Some Asian students may not be used to eating cereal. Please explain to the student about American style breakfasts. Asian students love rice for all meals, so you might want to make that available to them if possible. LUNCH: Variety is always good. It is always good if the student has some input in meal choices. However, please feel free to provide the student with the food items you judge appropriate. You may go to the store together and have him choose his lunch menu. DINNER: Prepared by the host family. It is always a great idea to have this meal with the entire family. This is great opportunity for you talk to your student about the day, discuss family plans, etc. (One of our host families suggested assigning a night for the student to cook a meal.) 3 P a g e

4 RESTAURANTS: From time to time, families may like to invite students out for dinner. The stipend money can cover some of these expenses. If you go out to dinner, that is part of providing three meals a day, and that is where the stipend would come in. COMMUNICATION PROCESS: Communication is the key to the success of a homestay experience. Letting your student know what your guidelines, rules, expectations are, is extremely important. If at any time, you have any questions or concerns, please let us know. The most common difficulties experienced by host families are: The student is Too quiet, too shy, won t talk to us Too demanding, asking too many questions Rude Homesickness Makes a mess in the shower Wanting more freedom than we will allow Immature Too studious/not studious at all Too social Always tired Does not like our food CONVERSATION AND FAMILY ACTIVITY: The purpose of a student living with host families is to engage and learn from the American cultural experience and develop their English skills. Please include your student in family activities and encourage your student to participate in family conversations. Make them feel a part of your family. For example, students may ask you for help with homework; please let the student know when it is the best time for you. If they seem bored or restless during down times, encourage them to take a walk or bike ride, prepare a dish from their country, play a game, or watch TV. In the beginning communication might be a bit challenging. Please remember that international students tend to be shy at first until they get used to their new environment. At the start, please speak slowly and clearly, as students are not used to our accents. Writing things down may aid communication. Should you experience concerns with your student: Of course we all wish for every experience to go exceptionally well, but there may be a time when it does not. Sometimes students and families do not blend well or the student behaves in a way that is concerning to you and your family. Please remember that students are away from home, in a new place, and this may be the first time they are without the guidance of their parents. Occasionally students like to test their host parents, not only to see what the boundaries are, but to learn what is important to their host parents. Everyone parents differently. In the event that this happens, there are two important things to remember: Patience- Patience is very important in this instance. Please try not to overreact to a situation as it is not often helpful. Your student may be going through something and their behavior is not the norm for them. As with many teenagers, their age often causes them to behave inappropriately. Having patience will help you to be nonjudgmental and will help in following established procedures. Our goal is to improve the student s behavior and address the issue. 4 P a g e

5 Communication- Communication is crucial to the success of all experiences, and especially when there is a concern. A student may be experiencing trouble in school, or difficulty making friends. They may be feeling homesick or missing a special occasion back home. Often times their behavior is not indicative of what the issue is and you will never get to the bottom of it unless you have a heart-to-heart conversation with the student. This is your first step in solving the problem. Please remember that many people have done much for your student to be here. This is not a situation where giving up easily can occur. We owe it to the host family, the student, their parents, and our international partner to give the student an opportunity to change their behavior. MISUNDERSTANDINGS and PROBLEMS: Students, as well as families, are encouraged to contact Damien High School or your host family coordinator anytime they have a question or concern. We are here to help solve any misunderstandings or problems that might arise. If we do not hear from you, we assume that everything is fine. TELEPHONES: Students should have their own cell phones. In the first week (especially the younger students) students will need help getting a cell phone. MEDICAL INSURANCE: Students have medical insurance; however, vision and dental are not included. Please make sure you have a copy of the student s insurance card and information with you. CURRENCY: Students are advised to bring their own money, credit card, or ATM card. A host family should never open an account or co-sign an account for their student. Under no circumstances should a host family give money or lend money to a student. This includes family trip expenses, lunch money, etc. VISITING RELATIVES: Students should notify you when their relatives are visiting. You are not expected to house them; however, they might like to meet you, so please make yourself available. VISITING GUESTS/FRIENDS: Students are not allowed to have guests without your permission. Please discuss your specific house guidelines with them. PROPERTY DAMAGE: Please note that Damien High School is not responsible for damage to your personal property. Should you choose to allow your student to use your things, you should do so at your own risk. Computers, laptops, and electronics are included in this. You set the guidelines on this. Students are typically very careful, so there should be no problems with property damage at home. SOME CULTURAL ORIENTATION POINTS FOR HOST FAMILIES: The following highlight some cultural differences: You may need to explain to your homestay student how to use the sheets on the bed and to explain where the wet towels go, or they may turn up in some very peculiar spots. Some homestay students may be very shy about having their underwear washed by another person, so please allow them to do that by themselves. Drains are usually built to handle a large quantity of water in the home country. Asian students are typically not used to eating a lot of bread (Sandwiches, etc.) and they may want a meal with rice. You do not have to cook rice every day, but your student will appreciate it if you serve rice occasionally. You may be surprised if your student forgets to say please when asking for something and Thank you when something has been done or given to them. This is because in some cultures, family members are not expected to keep thanking each other. If time permits, make contact with your student before they arrive in America. This may make the initial meeting feel less awkward. 5 P a g e

6 Initially, your homestay student will feel like a guest in your home. Please let them know they are a part of the family. This will help them adjust a little better. There is a time difference between The United States and your student s country of origin, so please help them adjust to this difference by discussing with your student appropriate times to go to bed, wake up, and so on. RELIGION: Families need to respect a student s religious beliefs and background. It is better to share the love of God through your actions in your home rather than by forcing them to attend church. MONTHLY ACTIVITIES: We are looking for parent volunteers to help plan activities such as potluck dinners, movie nights, bowling nights, etc. If you are interested please call the International Program Office. VACATIONS: Holidays are a time when many students go home; however, some may not be going home. Please try to work out the vacation schedule with your student. STUDENT TRAVEL: All student travel must be arranged within periods of vacation. We highly discourage students missing days of school due to late arrivals or early departures. All travel requires that a Travel Report Form be filed with the International Student Program Office at least two weeks prior to the departure date. LENGTH OF STAY: The student will arrive anywhere from a week to ten days before school gets started in order to adjust to the new home and new life. This period is very important; this is when rules and guidelines should be set. HOST FAMILY STIPEND: You are to provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. Also, reasonable transportation should be provided (Taking them to the mall, seeing friends, etc.). If you are going to the movies with the student, please use part of your monthly stipend to cover this activity. The student is responsible for everything else (New clothes, music, going to movies with friends, shopping, and so on). ATTENDING SCHOOL FUNCTIONS, EVENTS, and MEETINGS: Host parents are obligated to treat their student as they would if their own child was attending Damien. As such, host parents are obligated to attend all school-wide events such as: parent/student meetings, back-to-school nights, parent/teacher conferences, college prep nights, Academic Awards Ceremony, mother/father/son masses, Kairos mass, Baccalaureate mass, graduation, sporting events, etc. LIVE SCAN and VIRTUS TRAINING: By mandate of the Los Angeles Archdiocese, all adults 18 years or older living in a guardian house must have a Live Scan and receive Virtus training. Directions for receiving both can be found on our website at - EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS: Not to consume alcohol, tobacco, or drugs at anytime To abide by American laws at all times To adhere to the schedules and time tables- especially to wait at the agreed time and place when being picked up by their homestay family. If there are any schedule changes, they are to inform the host family of them To let you know where they are going at all times To confirm with you if they can invite friends home for a meal or to visit 6 P a g e

7 That they must obey homestay family directions That their host will have their well-being and safety in mind at all times Homestay hosts are not running a hotel service and they should assist with washing the dishes, keeping their home clean, and assisting with laundry, etc. That all household rules apply to them as they do to other members of the host family VACCINATIONS: All NEW students are required to receive a TB test and Tdap shot prior to attending school. Verification should be given to the international program coordinator. ACADEMIC PROGRESS: Students are expected to do all that is necessary in the way of remaining in satisfactory academic standing at Damien High School. Host families should monitor the academic progress of their student and help his academic needs like they would their own child. Damien uses a student information platform called Aeries. Both students and guardians will be given log in credentials at the beginning of school. Please use this to remain familiar with your student s progress. PROGRESS and FINAL GRADE REPORTS: Progress reports will be sent to the guardian address each quarter. Final grade reports will arrive at the end of each semester. Please scan and send each report to either the student s agent or directly to the natural parents. CHRISTIAN SERVICE HOURS: Each Damien High School student must complete a minimum of 100 Christian service hours upon graduation. See the Director of Campus Ministry for more information. You are responsible for offering rides to and from Christian service opportunities. ATTENDANCE: Attending school each and every day is vitally important to the success of your student. Students should arrive on time. Excused absences are allowed by calling the school prior to 9am and bringing a signed note to the attendance office on the day of return. Attendance can be reached by calling the school at Unexcused absences and tardiness will result in consequences from the Deans office. Please see the Parent-Student Handbook for policy on attendance. DISCIPLINE PROCESS: Please read the Damien Parent-Student Handbook with your student. Damien High School reserves the right to discipline or remove a student at any time if deemed necessary and according to the policy and procedures laid out in this handbook. STAYING IN THE LOOP: It is important that you know what is going on at school each and every day. It is good practice to printout and post Damien s weekly calendar (found on our website at This will help keep you and your students in the loop. SPORTS: We encourage our international students to get involved in sports while at Damien. For more information visit our webpage at Contact the international program office for further clarification. GUARDIANSHIP: California State law requires each student to be under the care of a legal guardian. If a student is under guardianship, the guardian will be considered legally responsible for the student. This means that guardians must provide up-to-date contact information and inform Damien High School if and when guardianship is discontinued. If guardianship changes during the school year, a guardian must notify in advance the school in writing and submit a new Custodial Authorization Form that is signed by parents and mailed to Damien High School. 7 P a g e

8 Hosting can be a wonderful cultural opportunity for your family and for your student. Please remember that the initial period will require some adjustment. We ask families to have realistic expectations. We are here to help both families and students make the most of their time together. Please contact us anytime!
