1 Analysis of Functions/Math Analysis Course Syllabus - Mrs. Decker deckerm1@duvalschools.org Website: Dear Student and Parent: I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Analysis of Functions/Math Analysis at Paxon School for Advanced Studies. In order to provide each student with a positive, well managed learning environment, I have compiled a list of rules, procedures and requirements necessary for a successful school year. Please read through this letter. If you have any questions regarding this material or any other matter, please feel free to call, or schedule an appointment. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Analysis of Functions - In this course students will focus on the Fundamental Concepts of Algebra; Equations and Inequalities; Functions and their Graphs; Polynomial and Rational Functions; Exponential and Logarithmic Functions; Trigonometric Functions. Math Analysis - This math course is designed to focus on Functions; Matrices and Determinants; Sequences and Series; Probability. SUPPLIES & MATERIALS: 1. Textbook Algebra & Trigonomtery by Pearson 2. 3-ring binder with dividers (Notes, Homework/Homework Checks, Quizzes, Worksheets, Tests) 3. Plenty of loose-leaf paper & graph paper 4. Supply of #2 pencils, colored pens (not blue or black) & erasers 5. Graphing Calculator (If you are purchasing a calculator, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND at minimum a TI-83 Plus. TI-84s are preferable.) *Students are responsible for bringing the proper materials to class everyday.* EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to accurately represent their answers on any homework/ homework check, quiz, test and/or worksheet as instructed by the teacher. Students are expected to write complete sentences for word problems. CLASSROOM RULES: 1. If you are tardy, go to Student Services and get a tardy slip before coming to class. On time is in your seats when the bell rings 2. All assignments are to be completed in PENCIL, with all work shown. Work completed in ink will NOT be graded. 3. Do not cause a class disturbance by engaging in any activity that causes other students or the teacher to be distracted. 4. No food or drink (other than water), including gum, is permitted in the classroom. 5. Pack up and leave when the bell rings, not before (wait for my dismissal). 6. Respect me, your classmates and everyone s property. 7. If a student wants to use the hall pass, ask Mrs. Decker. To use the pass, students must place their cellphone in the Cell Block. They will receive the phone back when they return with the pass. *County and school wide rules are always in effect (refer to the Code of Student Conduct).*

2 FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE ABOVE GUIDELINES MAY LEAD TO: 1. Verbal Warning 2. Phone Call Home 3. Detention (to be served within 1 week) 4. Referral *The severity of the infraction will determine at which level the consequences will begin.* CLASS NOTES and HOMEWORK: Students are required to take notes on a daily basis. Notes usually include definitions, formulas, procedures and example problems. Keeping things neat and organized may prove to be quite beneficial. Homework will be assigned on a daily basis. Homework grades will consist of comprehension checks based on examples given in class and from assignment. ATTEMPT EVERY PROBLEM - beyond copying the problem given. SHOW WORK! CHECK answers from the back of the book, when applicable. I DO NOT ACCEPT LATE ASSIGNMENTS if you were present in class and just didn t complete the assignment! If you are stuck on a problem, I encourage you to read your notes, consult your textbook, call a classmate, attend after school help sessions with me or other tutoring opportunities. County policy is a day for a day, so if a student is absent 1 day, they have 1 day to turn in the assignment. If the student was absent 2 days, then they have 2 days to turn in the assignments, and so on. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to ask about your make-up work, complete it and turn it in. All assignments must contain student s COMPLETE name, date, period, assignment, and ALL work! TESTS and QUIZZES: It is your responsibility to be here on quiz and test days. If you are absent the day of the test or quiz, you will have two after school sessions to make up a quiz and four after school sessions to make up a test. Absences will result in a grade of zero. Homework Checks and homework should be made up by the day of the chapter test. Make-ups may be done on Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays after school from 3:00-4:00 p.m. CHEATING = ZERO (For both the supply and demand ends of the transaction) CELL PHONES MAY NOT BE USED AS CALCULATORS ON QUIZZES OR TESTS! I will be available on Thursdays from 3:00-3:45 p.m. in room 207 for anyone who has additional questions or needs additional help. Overall grades will be calculated by total point accumulation. Every assignment is worth a certain point total. The final grade will therefore be calculated by: [Total points earned / Total points possible] X 100 = your grade Letter grades will then be determined using the Duval County Grading Scale: A B C D 59-0 F

3 As far as the class, as a whole, is concerned here are a few suggestions/insights for the class 1. I would make sure that when your student is taking notes in class that he/she is not only writing down the examples that we work through during the lesson, but also writing down the step-by-step procedure that I am giving them. That way he/she can use those notes when working on homework, studying for quizzes/tests, etc. and have detailed instructions on how to work out those types of problems. 2. I would make sure the student is doing the homework like actually working out the problems and not copying from the back of the book or just waiting to write things down when we go over the assignment during the next class day. Working on homework is giving him/her a chance to practice those procedures and put those skills into action. The examples in notes and/or homework are the same types (sometimes the exact same problems) that they may see on the homework checks or quizzes or tests. 3. Most of the time, after we have gone over the entire assignment and discussed any questions or concerns that the students had with the assignment (I would encourage your student to ask questions when he/she has trouble and doesn t understand something that we have discussed), I usually give the students a 3 question homework check, sometimes more than 3 questions based on how many sections we might have covered. The students can use their homework and their notes to work on the homework check. They have about 15 minutes (or longer if there are more questions) to complete the homework check. I think having organized notes and having practiced the problems in homework would help in this aspect of the class. 4. I give all the due dates for quizzes, tests, reviews, etc. when we begin a chapter. I also remind them every class day of the upcoming events. I would make sure that your student is writing down those dates. The dates can also be found on my website calendar. 5. I give a review sheet at the beginning of each chapter. The students should be able to work through the problems on the review sheet as we go along in the chapter. 6. I have a notebook and grade record sheet check at the end of each quarter to see if the students are keeping an organized notebook of all the resources they will be able to use for review for the EOC. I have individual whiteboards in my classroom that the students use to do examples when we are talking about the lesson. I mark down who is participating by showing me their whiteboard and the work they have done. These are called Board Boosters. They count as a participation grade for the quarter. 7. I offer a recovery test for each chapter test. The recovery test is usually about 2-3 weeks after we have taken the initial chapter test. The student will have to complete an assignment in MathXL with a passing score of at least 75% before they are allowed to take the recovery test. I ask the students to sign up for the recovery test so that I only make enough copies for the students who are interested and don t waste paper. I will check the sign-up list with the MathXL assignment to see if the student is eligible for recovery. The recovery test looks a lot like the review sheet and the chapter test, so by the time the recovery test comes along, they have homework, HW checks, quizzes, a review sheet, the chapter test and notes to help them prepare for the test. I would encourage him/her to sign up for the recovery tests if he/she is not satisfied with his/her test grade that might give him/ her the opportunity to earn a higher grade. Students are not allowed to use test recovery as an option of making up the original grade if they were absent. They must make up the original test and then have the option of recovering the grade if there is still time to sign up. The recovery grade will replace the original test grade for better or for worse.

4 8. I offer make-up time on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. I offer tutoring for Algebra 2 H on Tuesdays and for Analysis of Functions/Math Analysis on Thursdays after school. I have the students sign in. I would encourage him/her to stop by if he/she has questions on homework, quizzes, tests or anything we have done in class. I usually ask the students what types of questions we need to talk about...so having him/her come in with an idea of what they are struggling with usually helps us maximize our time together. If he/she can t make my help sessions, the school offers an Academic Learning Lab guidance would have information on the days and times where peer tutoring is available. 9. I offer HW check recovery. If a student is unhappy with a HW check grade, they are able to go to MathXL and work on an assignment for that section and have the opportunity to recover the grade. HW check recovery should be logged into a folder that I keep by my desk. When a student enters a recovery in the book, then I update the HW check grade, if the recovery grade is higher. Students are not allowed to use HW check recovery as an option of making up the original grade if they were absent. They must make up the original homework check and then have the option of recovering the grade if there is still time to do so. HW check recovery is due by the time of the chapter test. Remember, I want you to succeed, however, the responsibility is ultimately in your hands. Please ask if you have any questions or need help. If something is unclear, see me as soon as possible. Don t wait until the next quiz or test. Above all, don t stop trying because DILIGENCE + PERSISTENCE = ACHIEVEMENT! IT IS STRONGLY SUGGESTED THAT YOU KEEP THESE GUIDELINES IN YOUR NOTEBOOK!
