Perform operations on real numbers and basic algebraic expressions without the use of a calculator. 2. Apply and follow the mathematical principles, operations and strategies to solve linear equations. 3. Model and solve real-world applications involving math principles, operations, and strategies. Attendance: College policy allows for a maximum of 9.3 missed class-hours; the equivalent of 8 classes. Three tardies are equivalent to an absence. If you are more than 15 minutes late or leave more than 15 minutes before class ends, that will count as an absence. If you leave during class and return you will be assessed a tardy. You can be dropped for lack of attendance. If you are absent from class, you are responsible for mastering all information discussed during your absence. Do not ask the instructor to repeat important information that you missed. Read the textbook, study the examples before attempting the problem set, and contact a classmate to obtain or go over the notes. See the instructor during office hours with specific questions after attempting the problems, if help is needed. Supplies: 200 sheet spiral/notebook, pencil, eraser, pen, highlighter, and 8 large bluebooks ( $3.25) from the PCC Bookstore; only. NO CALCULATORS.

2 Grading: 50% = Chapter Tests 25% = Final Exam 20% = Quizzes 5% = Homework Quizzes All work will be evaluated on the following scale: 90% - 100% A, 80% - 89% B, 70% - 79% C, 60 69% D, below 60 % F Homework: All homework assignments are valued at 0 points each. Practice is to be completed online using MyMathLab. The MyMathLab access code is available for free with the purchase of a new book. The access is good for the life of the edition. It can also be purchased online at If you are already registered for MyMathLab from last semester, you may be able to change your enrollment to this section. USE AN ADDRESS THAT YOU ACTIVELY CHECK; I frequently send messages via . MyMathLab works on PCs and Macs. If you do not have a computer, PCC has a computer lab in the lower level of the D-building. When you are unable to complete a problem or if you are not sure how to do a problem, 1) click view an example, 2) click help me solve this, and/or 3) click text book). View an example is the same for everyone; Help me solve this is the same as the given problem and walks you through the problem; and textbook takes you to the beginning of the current section using the e-book. When you are unable to complete a problem after several attempts and using the aides, press Ask my instructor and explain to me what you think is wrong. I will go over as many problems as I can at the next class meeting. Homework Quizzes: After completing the homework, you are to take a short quiz. The homework assignments are required in order to take the homework quizzes which account for 5% of your grade. You will need to achieve a predetermined grade on the homework assignment in order to take the corresponding quiz. The questions for the quiz come from the homework assignment. The quiz score is the grade that will be recorded for that assigned section. There are no deadlines for working on homework, but there are deadlines for the homework quizzes. There are a total of 5 days to complete a homework quiz. The highest score will be recorded. Extra credit is available when all quizzes are completed, for a set of assignments leading up to an exam, that receive a score of 90% or higher. The amount of extra credit is equivalent to a 20% increase for each assignment. There will be a 1 point (20%) deduction on the homework for each quiz not taken by the deadline.

3 Tips for HW: Complete all homework in the 200 sheet-notebook or binder in a neat and organized way as if you were writing a math book. Bring this to class each day so you can make corrections and take notes on those problems. Tests: Tests are listed on the calendar; the dates may change. Missed tests receive a grade of zero. There are no make-up tests**. No extra credit will be awarded if your phone goes off during a test. Extra Credit: Extra credit will be available based on improvement on consecutive tests. A = 10 points extra credit 20% or higher improvement = 10 points extra credit % improvement = 5 points extra credit Less than 10% improvement = 2 point extra credit Quizzes: Quizzes will be unannounced. Missed quizzes receive a grade of zero. There are no make-up quizzes. One of the lowest quiz grades will be dropped at the end of the semester for every six quizzes taken. No quizzed will be dropped, if your cell phone type device goes off during a quiz, you exceed the allowable absences, and/or you have more than 20 tardies. **Missed tests due to required fieldtrips or athletics at PCC, court, or hospitalization may be taken at alternate times ONLY when arrangements have been made with the instructor in advance, when possible. 5 How students enroll To enroll in a typical course, a student needs to have a: Student access code, a valid credit card, or a PayPal account Students get an access code with a new book purchase or by buying the code separately in a student access kit/card at the campus bookstore. Students can also buy access to a course online with a credit card or PayPal account while they are enrolling. The student access code is nontransferable and can be used only once. If a student is waiting for financial aid, they can access your course without payment. This option grants a student temporary access to your course for 17 days. For more information, see To request temporary access. Course ID This number, which identifies your particular course, consists of your last name followed by five digits, for example, wong You must give your students the course ID before they can enroll. address - The student's registration and enrollment confirmation will be sent to this address. This address is also available to you, the instructor, for course-based communications. A student who does not already have a Pearson account and is enrolling for the first time should follow the registration instructions from the Students area of the MyLab and Mastering website. To assist these students, print the instructions and distribute them, along with the course ID for your course. A student who already has a Pearson account performs the steps in Registering and Enrolling in a New Subject below to enroll in a new course. To assist these students, copy the instructions to a document and distribute. You may want to enter your course ID in the space provided in step 2. Note: Students who need to enroll in another course based on the same textbook as a current or previous course should go through their Pearson Account Profile to enroll. They do not need to use a new access code or make a payment. Direct these students to: 1. Go to and sign in. 2. Under the list of MyLab and Mastering products, click Enroll in a Course. 3. Enter the course ID received from the instructor of the new course, confirm the course information, and click Continue. If the student is prompted to provide an access code or purchase course access using a credit card or PayPal, the course materials do not match the previous course.
