1 Grade Level Benchmarks (GLB) describe the concepts and skills we want students to know and be able to demonstrate in each grade level and each course. Teachers will assess student academic performance for each GLB while providing instruction and tasks to maximize student progress toward demonstrating the expectations for each course. 2 nd Grade Grade Level Benchmarks and Components Oskaloosa Community School District * 1800 N. 3 rd St., Oskaloosa, IA 52577

2 2 nd Grade - Grade Level Benchmarks and Components Language Arts 2 nd Grade students will develop skills to extend understanding of written and oral language. Students will read a variety of genres that require reading strategies and more complex vocabulary. A 2 nd Grade student in Language Arts will be assessed to determine what they know or are able to demonstrate on the following Grade 1. I can apply phonics and word analysis to become fluent readers a. Read and write words with consonant and vowel digraphs (r blends, s blends, l blends) b. Identify and read words made of different components (contractions, compound words, etc.) c. Read grade level irregular spelled words d. Identify and use synonyms, antonyms, and homophones e. Read and write words with long vowels team (ai, ay, ee, ie, ae, etc.) f. Read and write words with y as a vowel 2. I can read fiction passages fluently a. Use context to self- correct word recognition b. Read with fluency and use expression signals (punctuation, capital letters, underlined words, italicized, bold, quotation marks) 3. I can interpret, read, and respond to fiction and non-fiction text a. Locate and summarize text using pictures and words to aid in understanding b. Determine author s purpose and who is telling the story c. Use comprehension strategies to understand text d. Classify statements as fact or opinion e. Read on- level text with purpose and understanding f. Use context clues to develop and expand vocabulary g. Identify cause and effect relationships 4. I have developed and use writing skills a. Develop paragraphs b. Write friendly letters c. Write informative/explanatory pieces d. Write opinion pieces e. Write narrative pieces 5. I can apply grammar and mechanics oral and written a. Use commas in dates, series and compound sentences b. Produce and expand complete and compound sentences c. Use correct forms of irregular plural nouns d. Use reflexive pronouns (myself, ourselves) e. Use punctuation correctly in initials, abbreviations, and titles f. Use apostrophes when using contractions and possessive nouns g. Apply rules of capitalization (First word, I, proper nouns, days of week, months, titles of people, etc.) h. Use collective nouns i. Use adjectives and adverbs 6. I can incorporate speaking and listening to communicate a. Contribute to class or small group discussions b. Ask questions to clarify c. Speak to inform, entertain or express ideas in complete sentences d. Use eye contact and body language when speaking or listening Math 2 nd Grade students will demonstrate and apply an understanding of place value and number relationships as they add and subtract. A 2 nd Grade student in Math will be assessed to determine what they know or are able to 1. I can use a calendar, tell time, and count money a. Read a calendar b. Describe relationship among standard units of time 2

3 c. Tell and write time from analog and digital clock to nearest 5 minutes d. Calculate amounts and combinations of pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars 2. I can recognize place value positions a. Read and write numbers w/in 1000 b. Classify odd and even numbers c. Compare numbers d. Represent whole numbers e. Compose and decompose multi- digit numbers f. Identify, create and repeat patterns g. Mentally count up and back by 10 and 100 from any given number 3. I can solve addition and subtraction problems a. Add and subtract facts to 20 b. Construct and solve equations using the correct operation c. Solve simple equations with a missing addend d. Add and subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers with and without grouping e. Add 4 two- digit numbers f. Use addition to write equations to find the total number of objects in arrays up to 5 rows and 5 columns g. Solve 1 and 2- step story problems using problem- solving strategies, picture drawing, computation and mental math 4. I can estimate and measure using units for length a. Measure the length of an object by selecting and using tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks and measuring tapes b. Estimate and measure lines and objects to the nearest inch, centimeter, and meter c. Demonstrate that the smaller unit, the more units it takes to cover the measurement d. Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths that are given in the same units and equations with a symbol for the unknown umber to represent the problem e. Represent whole numbers as lengths from 0 on a number line diagram with equally spaced points corresponding to the numbers 0, 1,2.and represent whole numbers ums and differences within 100 on a number line diagram 5. I can analyze sold figures to create 2- dimensional figures a. Identify characteristics of shapes b. Compose and decompose 2D figures by replacing large shapes with smaller ones and smaller shapes with a larger one c. Read, write and represent fractions through fourths 6. I can represent and interpret data a. Explain the characteristics of bar graphs, pictographs, tables and charts b. Interpret data and make observations c. Draw a pictograph and bar graph Science 2 nd Grade students will build upon prior scientific knowledge to expand their understanding of their scientific world through the exploration of earth materials, physical forces and life cycles. A 2 nd Grade student in Science will be assessed to determine what they know or are able to 1. I can apply knowledge of properties of earth materials a. Identify the properties that make up our earth b. Inquire, conduct experiments, and communicate their findings 2. I can apply knowledge of daily and seasonal weather conditions a. Retell how weather changes daily and over the seasons due to the earth revolving around the sun b. Explain how the sun effects weather patterns c. Use tools to gather data and construct explanations 3. I can apply knowledge of life cycles of plants a. Illustrate the life cycle of plants b. Compare and contrast plants to plant parents c. Identify basic needs of plants and how they adapt to different environments d. Ask questions, conduct investigations, and communicate findings 3

4 Social Studies 4. I can apply knowledge of ways to care for the environment a. Determine ways they can contribute to a cleaner and safer environment 5. I can apply knowledge of good health habits a. Categorize food into the five food groups b. Develop a balanced meal that promotes exercise 6. I can apply knowledge of positions and motions of objects a. Use simple machines to change the position of an object b. Predict how forces will effect the position of an object c. Predict how tools are helpful in moving objects by conducting simple experiments and communicate their findings to peers while using safe procedures 2 nd Grade students will acquire skills in the following areas: cultural diversity, rules and laws, past and present, social responsibility, and map reading as it relates to themselves and their role as a U.S. citizen A 2 nd Grade student in Social Studies will be assessed to determine what they know or are able to demonstrate on the following Grade 1. I can compare and contrast cultures around the world a. Describe the characteristics of a culture b. Identify similarities and differences in various cultures 2. I can identify and use features of maps and globes a. Differentiate between natural and cultural features in your community b. Identify their town/city, state, and country c. Label basic parts of a map 3. I can identify and analyze the importance of rules and laws in their lives a. Explain why rules are important b. Identify rules at school, at home, and in the community c. Identify laws in their community d. Differentiate between rules and laws e. Identify the responsibilities of citizens at school, at home, and in the community f. Identify national symbols of America 4. I can exhibit an understanding that people have individual traits and roles that change over time a. Use a timeline to show understanding of past, present, and future using real- life examples b. Apply concepts, principles strategies and tactics related to movement and performance a. Demonstrate movement concepts 3. 5 Visual Arts - Art d. Identify nutrition 4. Exhibit responsible, personal, and social behavior a. Demonstrate personal responsibility b. Follows rules and etiquette 5. Recognize the value of physical activity a. Identify healthy, challenge and self- expression enjoyment 2 nd Grade Art students will acquire a basic knowledge of art concepts and techniques through the highly personal act of creating and discussing artwork. Students will create works of art using various techniques: drawing with a variety of media, painting, ceramics, and the building of three-dimensional projects. Students will also participate in class discussions on various works of art using art vocabulary. A 2 nd Grade student in Art will be assessed to determine what they know or are able to General Music 2 nd Grade General Music students will express themselves through singing, moving, playing, creating and listening to music. A 2 nd Grade student in Music will be assessed to determine what they know or are able to 1. Demonstrate expression in music a. Perform simple songs in small groups or independently b. Perform simple rhythmic and melodic patterns 2. Demonstrate understanding of theory of music a. Comprehend and use vocabulary for dynamics, tempo and meter b. Comprehend beginning notational elements c. Identify vocal and instrumental tone colors d. Identify beginning melodic and rhythmic patterns 1. Demonstrate basic knowledge of art history a. Identify the seven elements of art b. Understand basic art vocabulary 2. Use tools and techniques safely a. Use art materials and tools safely b. Use various media techniques c. Create patterns using shapes 3. Create 2-dimensional artwork a. Arrange elements to create a two- dimensional composition b. Use various media techniques and processes 4. Create 3-dimensional artwork a. Pinch, curl, and roll clay to make forms b. Curl, fold, and bend paper 5

6 Technology - Multimedia 2 nd Grade students will demonstrate basic computer skills and concepts of the computer, create documents and exhibit responsible use. A 2 nd Grade student in Multimedia will be assessed to determine what they know or are able to demonstrate on the following Grade 1. Demonstrate basic computer skills a. Identify computer terms b. Identify parts of the computer c. Use and control the mouse 2. Responsibly use computers a. Leave computer station neat and clean b. Practice safe use technology 3. Create a simple word processing document a. Open a document b. Save a document c. Print a document Information Literacy 2 nd Grade students will demonstrate understanding of the layout of the library and apply library policies and procures during the selection of age-appropriate reading material. Students will identify parts of a book and apply communication skills when sharing with peers. A 2 nd Grade student in Information Literacy will be assessed to determine what they know or are able to demonstrate on the following Grade 1. Select and check out a picture book a. Choose a book based on guidelines b. Read or listen to folklore c. Read or listen to fiction picture books d. Read or listen to non- fiction e. Read or listen to a variety of authors and illustrators f. Read or listen to award- winning literature g. Participate in activities such as storytelling, drama, puppetry, finger plays, songs, poetry, etc. 2. Perform on instruments alone and with others a. Perform on pitch and in rhythm b. Perform easy patterns in harmony c. Perform a variety of music d. Echo short rhythms and melodies e. Perform instrumental parts while others sing or play contrasting parts Grade Level Benchmarks are statements describing what students need to know and demonstrate to be successful in a grade or course. Each Grade Level Benchmark (GLB) is assessed by teachers and reported out on the report card. In addition, the Components describe the specific content and/or skills your child will be learning during that unit of instruction. The teacher will provide your child with instruction and learning experiences to maximize their learning potential. Our goal is to make your child successful in all content areas of the Oskaloosa curriculum.
