1 Rogue Community College RWC Summer 2018 Math 112 Elementary Functions MTWR 10:30 11:40 Instructor: Mary Middleton Rm RWC J1 Office: Wiseman (W9) Phone: Office Hours: 9:00 10:30 AM TWR, additional on request Course Description: Topics include trigonometric functions, analytic trigonometry, and additional topics in trigonometry. Covers basic and advanced trigonometry. We ll cover chapters 6, 7 and 8 of the pre-calculus text. Prerequisites: MTH 95 and RD 30, or appropriate placement test scores. Required Materials: Text: Precalculus with Modeling and Visualization Volume 2, Second Custom Edition for RCC, Addison-Wesley, Rockswold, 2014 with MLP access. A TI-83 or TI-84 (plus or silver editions) or other graphing calculator is required. (TI-84 is the model the instructor will be using.) Graph paper and pencil. Grading: You will receive a grade A-F based on your completion and performance in the listed categories. Your grade will be based on a weighted average of the categories and will be assigned as follows: A 90%, B 80%, C 70%, D 60%, F < 60% HW Quizzes: There will be 6 quizzes spread throughout the term (see schedule). Each quiz will have 2 parts; the first part will contain problems directly from the book work assigned each week, and the second will contain new problems over the same topics. A total of 6 quizzes will be given but only your top 5 scores will be included in the computation of your grade. This will accommodate for unexpected absences. Weight: 10% Online Work: Each section we cover will have an accompanying online assignment. Each section s homework should be completed on the day that its lecture is completed. Due dates are listed in MML. Weight: 7% In-class Assignments: In-class assignments will be given sporadically and will not be announced before class. These assignments will give you the opportunity to practice problems with the support of your instructor and your classmates. These assignments will be graded mostly on participation and cannot be turned in late. Weight: 8% Tests: There will be 3 cumulative, closed book, closed note tests given throughout the term. Although the tests will be cumulative the majority of problems will cover new material. If you need to take a test late there will be a daily 10% deduction on the maximum score attainable (arrangements must be made in advance). Weight: 15% each Final: The final exam will be cumulative, closed book and closed note. A formula sheet will be provided. 2 Academic Integrity: Cheating will not be tolerated. Any student caught, or suspected of, cheating could face disciplinary action including, but not limited to a failing grade on the assignment/test, a failing grade for the course, or suspension from the class. If you are having so many problems that you feel the only way out is to cheat, then you need to come talk with me. I am here to help you succeed. Attendance: It is important to realize from the beginning of the term that this class is not designed to be done in an independent study format. Attendance in necessary, missing will affect your grade negatively and you will be less likely to succeed in the course. If you cannot attend regularly, please see me immediately to explore alternatives to taking this class. Technology Use: Cell phones and/or IPOD type devices are not to be used during class. Cell phones should be turned off or turned to silent. If for some reason you need to leave your cell phone on vibrate mode during class please speak to me before class begins. Laptop use is acceptable but the use needs to be limited to course related functions such as taking notes. Help outside of class: If you are having trouble in this class it is important to seek help early and seek help often. Each topic in mathematics builds on the previous topics, so it is extremely important to stay caught up. Make use of the resources made available to you. The Tutoring Center in the Wiseman building offers free tutoring for RCC students. You do not need an appointment! Tutors are available starting at 8:30 am on weekdays. Check the on-line calendar for more details. There is also tutoring available at both the Riverside and Table Rock campuses. There are many online resources available to you. Log onto your MyLabsPlus account and use the Study Plan button to try additional problems. Watch videos and read lessons at Khan Academy, Purplemath, and YouTube. These links can be found on my page or the Math department page of RCC. Feel free to come by my office or send me an whenever you are struggling. 3 Rules, Regulations and Important Information. Regular Study Time: Budget 2-4 hours per credit each day to practice your math skills. Students are greatly encouraged to form study groups and work together to understand, discuss the material, and check the answers and process on homework assignments. RCC Policies: Administrative Drop: students who do not attend at least 50% of the class sessions during the first week of school and who do not contact the instructor to indicate a plan to attend are automatically dropped from the class during the 2nd week of the term. Refund policy: Students dropping a class by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday of the second week of the term get a full refund. After that there is no refund. Withdrawal from class: A student may withdraw from a class between the Thursday of Week 2 and the Friday of Week 8 at 11:59 pm. (Week 5 during summer term). W grade will be assigned. Disability Services: Any student who feels that he or she may need academic accommodations for a disability, such as vision, hearing, orthopedic, learning disabilities, psychological or other medical conditions, should make an appointment with the Disability Services Office. Incompletes generally are not given. If 75% or more of the course work is successfully completed, incompletes might be given for a special case that is evaluated on an individual basis, but not in lieu of a poor grade. These techniques include data fitting and the use of graphical, symbolic, narrative and tabular methods of analysis. Use trigonometry in a variety of applications in surveying, engineering, navigation, and others. Solve analytic geometry problems involving trigonometry Identify the need for data, obtain it from existing sources, and evaluate its relevance and accuracy for problem solving. Use inductive and deductive reasoning to develop and verify mathematical arguments. Participate in problem solving exercises and teach others as a team member. Select and analyze information involving trigonometric functions, and communicate the results to others using oral, written, graphic, pictorial, or multi-media methods Approach practical problems by choosing appropriate mathematical techniques outlined in the textbook, use quantitative data to construct logical explanations, and express mathematical ideas and concepts orally and in writing.
