1 College Level Student Learning Outcome Summary Report Guidelines College of Behavioral and Social Sciences & Social Work Reporting Dean: Pui Yan Lam, Associate Dean Date: Major/Certificate Programs are required to assess at least one SLO per year; however, some may elect to assess more than one. This report is a summary of Major/Certificate Programs assessments in your college, including documented impact on student learning and how assessment results will be used to improve student learning. Part I Refer to the form, beginning on page 4, which has been pre populated with the academic programs that award a Major or Certificate in your college. For each SLO(s) assessed for the current year, check a, b, c, or d as appropriate (defined below): Program s: a) SLO is met after changes resulting from ongoing assessments, referencing assessment results from the previous year to highlight revisions; b) SLO is met, but with changes forthcoming; c) SLO is met without change required; d) department /program demonstrates closing the loop process from previous year s report Part II Provide 1 2 page summaries as appendices for each of the Major/Certificate Programs that have assessed SLO(s) in your college this year. Include the following details for each SLO assessed: 1. Strategies or processes used to gather student performance data, assessment instruments used, and a description of how and when assessments were conducted; 2. Description of how the assessment SLO results were/will be addressed through changes (e.g., course content, course sequence, program curriculum, learning environment or student advising), including a) plans to improve student learning based on assessment findings, and b) a broad timeline of how and when identified changes will be addressed in the upcoming year. 3. Description of revisions to the assessment process the results suggest are needed; and 4. 8 Sociology BA Women s Studies BA ongoing data collection and analysis and discusses how it uses assessment data to affirm and/or make changes in the explicit and implicit curriculum to enhance student performance The program appends the summary data for each measure used to assess the attainment of each competency for at least one academic year prior to the submission of the self study. Students will demonstrate an understanding of core concepts such as social structure, socialization, culture, identity, institutions power, inequality and social justice. 9 PART II A. Summary of Assessment Results 24 out of 29 programs submitted their SLO assessment reports, a significant increase in response rate from the previous year. A tabulation of the results from Part I shows that: 2 of the 5 programs which did not submit their SLO reports assessment plan was under development for Interdisciplinary Studies and Race and Culture Studies 4 of the 24 programs assessed reported that (a) SLO met after changes resulting from ongoing assessments 8 of the 24 programs assessed reported that (b) SLO met without change required. 11 of the 24 programs assessed showed that (c) department/program demonstrates closing the loop process from previous year s report. 2 of the 24 programs did not indicate if SLOs were met. None of the reports concluded that SLOs not met. 18 of the 24 programs showing at least some closing the loop activities in response to assessment results. B. Summary of Data Collection Methods 1. Student Self Assessments through Survey: Children s Studies BA: surveys were administered at students entry point to he major in the Introduction to Children s Studies course (CDST 301) and the Senior Portfolio course (CDST 492). Psychology MS: a web based survey was administered to 1 st and 2 nd year students selfassessment regarding their perceptions of learning related to the selected SLO Social Work MSW: exit survey administered to the 2014 graduating cohort. 2. Criminal Justice, BA: qualitative assessment of research portfolios in CRIM490 Senior Capstone Government, BA: Students papers and in class exams in GOVT317 American Political Thought International Affairs BA: students case studies and final papers submitted for GOVT326 European Politics. History, M.A: Multiple choice quiz administered to students in HIST501: Introduction to Historical Studies. Psychology B.A.: a Senior Capstone quiz was administered to both BA Psychology and BS Applied Psychology students enrolled in the course.. Sociology B.A.: qualitative analysis of essay from SOCi490 Senior Capstone course Women s Studies: discussion assignments (e.g. discussion leader assignment) and final project (manifesto created jointly by students) in WMST490 Senior Capstone. 3. Student Grades from Courses Social Studies BA: grades from history coursework and selected social studies courses (Methods and Capstone) 4. Multiple Methods History BA: Student self assessment in HIST390 The Historian as Detective and students final papers in HIST490. School Psychology Ed.S. (traditional) National Examination in School Psychology, summary of grades in PSYC526, PSYC552, and PSYC554; competency in internship; portfolio ratings. School Psychology Ed.S. 11 MS Applied Psychology Mental Health group assignment in PSYC, application of ASCA National Model in internship, and evaluation of the teaching of a counselor in PSYC508. MS Applied Psychology School Counseling knowledge of theory in multiple courses; application of theory in PSYC697(Internship); teaching evaluation of counselor in PSYC508 (Classroom Management0 Social Work BASW: exit survey administered to senior in capstone course; assessment of two practice behaviors by Agency Field Instructors in students practicum sites; assignments in courses. C. Summary of Closing the Loop Efforts Most of the reports (18 out of 24) included a discussion of their closing the loop activities based on the SLO assessment report from Children s Studies, BA: Findings from the assessment are being considered preliminary and will become more evident at the end of the two year longitudinal assessment of all 12 SLOs. Some of the preliminary findings have been addressed in faculty meetings as an effort to begin closing the loop. Communication Studies, MS: The Department Graduate Advisory Committee was formed as the result of the previous assessment. The new Comprehensive Examination Exams option for graduation was developed and implemented. The MSC Curriculum Revision process has started. Disability Studies Undergraduate and Graduate Certificates: the curriculum was not changed but the methods of assessment were broadened and moved to the capstone course. Government, BA: To address the problem of students not retaining as much materials throughout the quarter, Powerpoint slides were posted to class Canvas site, learning assessment tests were created, bonus lectures were pout online to assist students in understanding materials, the department has also begun to use PLUS groups where experienced upper class students tutored the class International Affairs, BA: Case studies rather than large research papers were assigned to students in GOVT326; students were allowed to rewrite their first case studies if they found 11 W riting the College Level SLO Synthesis Report: Guideline

12 their initial grade unsatisfactory; two stage writing process to allow student to receive formal, graded feedback on their work before they submitted a final case study. History, BA: Report addresses the improvement needed for the assessment process in the department. Social Studies, BA: new tests were used, classroom exercises related to state standards were assigned; emphasis on assessment of student work and teacher pedagogy skills. Psychology, BA: Submitted new SLOS for both the BA Applied Psychology and BA Psycholoyg Programs. No substantial changes to curriculum made but are planning for an ternational assessment of the new SLO in the upcoming year. Ed.S. School Psychology: Provided guidance to candidates who were 2 nd and 3 rd year students in ; communicated with site supervisors so they understood the importance of our students working with parents and teachers in case studies; provided better guidance for students in selecting appropriate case studies. Ed.S. School Psychology (Online): Jamie Chaffin developed and taught PSYC602 online course which yielded strong outcomes in portfolios in 2014 cohort; received approval to offer a degree program through Graduate Studies and the State; PSYC 560 (Consultation) focused more on explicit feedback regarding the expectations of case study. Applied Psychology MS (Mental Health Counseling): No significant changes made due to increase workload of faculty. Changes for identified in report. Psychology, MS: No change was deemed necessary from the previous year. Social Work, BA: used new textbooks for SOWK468 (Social Work Research) and SOWK469 (Data Analysis); included more frequent article analysis assignments in SOWK469; continued with FLAIR assignments in SOWK468; increased the emphasis on single case design in SOWK468 and single case analysis in SOWK469 D. Revision to the Assessment Process There is a significant increase in completion rate in the SLO assessment reports from in the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences and Social Work.
