1 Butler Community College Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences Division Calisa Marlar Revised Spring 2017 Implemented Fall 2017 COURSE OUTLINE Beginning French 1 Course Description FL 118. Beginning French 1. 5 hours credit. This course will enable the student to communicate in French using fundamentals of basic vocabulary and phrases, pronunciation, reading and writing. The student will also define cultural characteristics inherent to the target culture, study the relevance of the target language community as it reflects on the student s own life, and make connections to other disciplines. This course is designed for the student who is beginning basic language study and preparing to pursue foreign language credits that fulfill degree requirements. The learning outcomes and competencies detailed in this outline meet, or exceed the learning outcomes and competencies specified by the Kansas Core Outcomes Project for this course, as approved by the Kansas Board of Regents (Transfers as FRN 1010). Required Materials For complete material(s) information, refer to Butler-Assessed Outcomes The intention is for the student to be able to 1. Communicate competently, at a beginning level, in French. 2. Demonstrate beginning language knowledge and skills. 3. Recognize elements of French-speaking cultures. Learning PACT Skills that will be developed and documented in this course Through involvement in this course, the student will develop ability in the following PACT skill areas: Analytical Thinking Skills Critical thinking - Through class discussion and analysis of informational passages and course content, the student will develop critical awareness of basic French. Communication Skills Reception and interpretation of messages - Through the production of written and spoken communication that expresses ideas and conveys needs, the student will develop basic communication skills in the French language. Technology Skills General computer use By completing electronically-facilitated research and preparation of computer-generated assignments, the student will develop basic computer skills. Major Summative Assessment Tasks These Butler-assessed Outcomes and Learning PACT skills will be demonstrated by FL 118 Beginning French 1 1

2 1. Recognizing similarities and differences between the sound and writing systems in the native and target languages. (A skill) (KWLC Standards 4.1: Novice Range) 2. Communicating on some very familiar topics using single words and phrases that are practiced and memorized. (C skill) (KWLC Standards 1.1: Novice Low Range) 3. Identifying, exploring, and discussing authentic instructional websites, materials, news media, short texts, and videos created for speakers of the target language. (T skill) (KWLC Standards 3.2: Novice Range) Skills or Competencies These actions are essential to achieve the course outcomes: (The following skills and competencies are taken from the Kansas World Language Curriculum Standards approved July, 2017) Standard 1: Communicate effectively in the target language in order to function in a variety of situations and for multiple purposes 1. Benchmark 1.1 Communication Interpersonal Learners interact and negotiate meaning in spoken, signed, or written conversations to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions. 2. Benchmark 1.2 Communication Interpretive Learners understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics. 3. Benchmark 1.3 Communication Presentational Learners present information, concepts, and ideas to inform, explain, persuade, and narrate on a variety of topics using appropriate media and adapting to various audiences of listeners, readers, or viewers. Standard 2: Interact with cultural competence and understanding 1. Benchmark 2.1 Cultures Relating Cultural Practices to Perspectives Learners use the language to investigate, explain, and reflect on the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the cultures studied. 2. Benchmark 2.2 Cultures Relating Cultural Products to Perspectives Learners use the language to investigate, explain, and reflect on the relationship between the products and perspectives of the cultures studied. Standard 3: Connect with other disciplines and acquire information and diverse perspectives in order to use the language to function in academic and career-related situations 1. Benchmark 3.1 Connections Making Connections Learners build, reinforce, and expand their knowledge of other disciplines while using the language to develop critical thinking and to solve problems creatively. 2. Benchmark 3.2 Connections Acquiring Information & Diverse Perspectives Learners access and evaluate information and diverse perspectives that are available through the language and its cultures. Standard 4: Develop insight into the nature of language and culture in order to interact with cultural competence 1. Benchmark 4.1 Comparisons Language Comparisons Learners use the language to investigate, explain, and reflect on the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own. 2. 3 Learners use the language to investigate, explain, and reflect on the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own. Standard 5: Communicate and interact with cultural competence in order to participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world 1. Benchmark 5.1 Communities School & Global Communities Learners use the language both within and beyond the classroom to interact and collaborate in their community and the globalized world. 2. Benchmark 5.2 Communities Lifelong Learning Learners set goals and reflect on their progress in using languages for enjoyment, enrichment, and advancement. Learning Units (The following learning units are taken from the Kansas World Language Curriculum Standards approved July, 2017) Benchmark 1.1 Interpersonal Communication greet peers. introduce self to someone. answer a few simple questions. greet and leave people in a polite way. introduce self and others. answer a variety of simple questions. make some simple statements in a conversation. ask some simple questions. communicate basic information about self and people they know. communicate some basic information about their everyday lives. Benchmark 1.2A Interpretive Communication (Listening) occasionally identify the sound of a character or word. occasionally understand isolated words that they have memorized, particularly when accompanied by gestures or pictures. understand a few courtesy phrases. recognize and sometimes understand basic information in words and phrases that they have memorized. recognize and sometimes understand words and phrases that they have learned for specific purposes. Benchmark 1.2B Interpretive Communication (Reading) recognize a few letters or characters. connect some words, phrases, or characters to their meanings. FL 118 Beginning French 1 3

4 recognize words, phrases, and characters with the help of visuals. recognize words, phrases, and characters when they associate them with things they already know. Benchmark 1.3A Presentational Communication (Speaking) recite words and phrases that they have learned. state the names of familiar people, places, and objects in pictures and posters using words or memorized phrases. introduce self to a group. recite short memorized phrases, parts of poems, and rhymes. present information about self and others using words and phrases. express their likes and dislikes using words, phrases, and memorized expressions. present information about familiar items in their immediate environment. talk about their daily activities using words, phrases, and memorized expressions. present simple information about something they learned using words, phrases, and memorized expressions. Benchmark 1.3B Presentational Communication (Writing) copy some characters or letters and words that they see on the wall or board, in a book, or on the computer. write words and phrases that they have learned. label familiar people, places, and objects in pictures and posters. fill out a simple form with some basic personal information. write about themselves using learned phrases and memorized expressions. list their daily activities and write lists that help them in their day-to-day lives. write notes about something they have learned using lists, phrases, and memorized expressions. Benchmark 2.1 Relating Cultural Practices to Perspectives use expressions for greetings, leave takings, and common classroom or social interactions. participate in or simulate games, birthday celebrations, storytelling, and dramatizations. express, either in simple language, symbols, or actions, the connections among cultural practices, products, and perspectives. 5 identify and observe tangible products of the culture, such as: toys, dress, homes, monuments, currency, famous people, and art. identify, discuss, and produce types of artwork, crafts, or graphic representations enjoyed or made by their peer group within the target culture, such as: models of monuments, mosaics, murals, traditional recipes, etc. express, either in simple language, symbols, or actions, the connections among cultural practices, products, and perspectives. Benchmark 3.1A Making Content Connections English Literacy & Social Studies read or listen to stories from the target culture and compare them to familiar stories from the same genre. present short biographical sketches of people who have had a positive influence locally or globally. read and view different text types and genres in order to interpret content. identify and label maps of cities, states, or countries with civic and geographic features where the target language is used. Benchmark 3.1B Making Content Connections Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM) use appropriate tools strategically. attend to precision. look for and make use of structure. look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. obtain, evaluate, and communicate information. use mathematics skills to convert U.S. dollars to the currencies of the target language countries in order to understand prices of items. use mathematics skills to convert weights and measurements from the American system to the metric system in order to understand distances, quantities, etc. use authentic resources about a region or ecosystem introduced in science class to create a target language poster that highlights plants, animal life, geographical features, and weather in the area. use science knowledge and skills to record daily temperature and weather in different locations around the world, based on location and time of year. Benchmark 3.1C Making Content Connections Arts interact with authentic examples of culture, such as: music, art, dance, visual arts, architecture, and cultural movements or styles originating from target language countries. identify key creators or innovators in the arts from target language countries. Benchmark 3.2 Acquiring Information & Diverse Perspectives read, listen to, or talk about age-appropriate school content in the target language. expand vocabulary through exploration of illustrations, infographics, video clips, websites, and print. identify the main idea(s) of authentic target language texts on current events or familiar topics. explore website of schools in target language countries to identify courses, schedules, and special projects, and compare the information to their school s website. identify, explore, and discuss authentic instructional websites, materials, news media, short texts, and videos created for speakers of the target language. Benchmark 4.1 Language Comparisons observe and compare registers of language (e.g., formal and informal) in greetings and leave takings and other common social interactions in the language they are learning and their own. recognize similarities and differences between the sound and writing systems in the language they are learning and their own. identify cognates between the target language culture and their native language, cite the patterns that connect them, and detect false cognates within the context in which they see them suggests a misfit. inventory idiomatic expressions in both their native language and the language being learned and talk about how idiomatic expressions work, in general. Benchmark 4.2 Cultural Comparisons demonstrate and compare/contrast appropriate gestures and oral expressions for greetings, leave takings, and other common social interactions in the target cultures and their own. compare daily routines and celebrations (i.e., birthdays and holidays) of the target cultures to their own. 7 compare/contrast tangible products (i.e., toys, sports, equipment, and food) of the target cultures to their own. compare/contrast expressive products (i.e., rhymes, songs, and folktales) of the target cultures to their own. Benchmark 5.1 School & Global Communities attempt to interact in the target language with members of their community. identify professions that require proficiency in the target language. exchange basic information about themselves, their studies, or their family, with speakers of the target language and/or students in other class, in face-to-face or virtual settings, such as social media, instant messaging, and video conferencing, etc. Benchmark 5.2 Lifelong Learning Communities interpret materials and/or use media from the target language and culture for enjoyment. play sports or games from the culture. listen to music, sing songs, or play musical instruments from the target culture. exchange information about topics of personal interest. Learning Activities Learning activities will be assigned to assist the student to achieve the intended learning outcomes through lecture, instructor-led class discussion, group activities, drills/skill practice, worksheets, small group projects, readings, viewing of various types of multimedia, in-class and out-of-class speakers or cultural events, student participation, conversation scenarios, practice situations, paired activities in the target language, and other activities at the discretion of the instructor. Grade Determination The student will be graded on learning activities and assessment tasks. Grade determinants may include the following: daily work, quizzes, chapter or unit tests, comprehensive examinations, projects, presentations, class participation, and other methods of evaluation at the discretion of the instructor.
