1 ENGLISH SPEAKING BOARD Year
2 Why ESB? Focus on effective communication skills, with a practical emphasis. Children speak in front of a small audience. Children demonstrate their listening skills. Gives children the opportunity to learn and recite a poem. Children read a short passage from a chosen book. Gives children greater confidence. The process supports our English lessons.
3 The ESB has 4 Sections:- Section 1 Show and Tell - Time 2 mins Section 2 Speaking by Heart Poetry 1 Min Section 3 Reading Aloud 1 min Section 4 Listening and Responding
4 Show and Tell - Possible Topics My Lego Train My Crazy Brothers Football Gymnastics My Ski Holiday My Safari My Guinea Pigs Being a Beaver My Puppy My Bike Hockey My Fossils My Chickens
5 Show and Tell Something special to you (the child). Choose a subject that you have plenty to talk about something from your experience. Include personal details. Show your listeners a board with pictures and a few words to tell your audience about something that is special to you. Tell them without making notes. Children prepare the board themselves at home. 40% of the Marks
6 How do we help the children prepare? Each child practises speaking clearly at a controlled pace. The children make eye contact with their audience. Children glance at and point to the board as they speak. Children must show an interest in topic. Clear beginning and end. Introduce topic and say why they chose it. Finish by saying Thank you for listening to me, have you any questions?. Detail must link to own experience. Smile and look enthusiastic.
7 Poetry Children choose a short poem (do not write one yourself). Speak it aloud, from memory Use your voice and face to show understanding and enjoyment.
8 How do we help the children prepare? If they have not chosen one from home we help the children find a poem. Give the title and poets name (If known). On the day we are able to prompt the children if they forget a word. Give a clear, audible voice. Share the poem enthusiastically.
9 Reading Aloud Choose a favourite reading book. Tell the listeners the title and author of the book. Read clearly so that you can be heard by everyone. Understand the passage. Bring your reading to life.
10 How do we help the children prepare? Choose a passage of 100 words from a fiction book. The passage must have dialogue speech. We make sure it is an interesting choice. Give the title and author. Read fluently and with a lively voice. Glance up from time to time to look at your audience. Look enthusiastic! Know why you chose the book. Make sure you have read the whole book know how it ends.
11 Listening and Responding Listen carefully to the questions after your talk. Answer clearly and thoughtfully. Listen well to other speakers, sitting still and look at them. Find interesting questions to ask others when you have the opportunity.
12 How do we help the children prepare? Children are supportive of others. Listen carefully. Ask thoughtful questions and make relevant comments. Be ready to take part supportively. Have an encouraging attitude to the rest of the group. Be positive, helpful and courteous throughout.
13 Remember Taking part in the ESB is very special for the children. If they have chosen a special topic for their presentation, found a favourite book and selected an enjoyable poem it will be fun for the children.
