1 Newsletter No Key to Success this fortnight: Resilience From the Principal - Mr David Hillhouse Welcome Back A very warm welcome back to all students, parents and school staff for Term 3. I hope you had an enjoyable holiday with family and friends. I would also like to welcome the new students and families who have joined the Sandy Strait State School community this term. Striving for Success in Semester 2 I would like to remind our school community about our commitment to ensuring that every student at Sandy Strait Strives for Success in To help define this vision we have set a target that: All students will achieve a year s growth in mathematics and reading for a year s input of teaching. Our two curriculum priority areas are reading and mathematics however a year s growth cannot happen without a year s worth of attendance. Our bold vision aims to ensure that if a Sandy Strait student is academically gifted, working at an age appropriate level or working below age appropriate level they each deserve a year s worth of growth in numeracy and reading for a year s input of teaching. NAIDOC Week NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. I would like to thank Karen Steyger and her extended family for organising such a wonderful week of activities last week. This year s theme was Our Languages Matter and all year levels participated in a range of activities including: Singing, story telling about K gari (Fraser Island), traditional games and dance. School Review The Department of Education and Training regularly reviews Queensland state schools to ensure they are delivering quality education to students. The reviews are conducted by the department s School Improvement Unit. The reviews do not rate or compare schools, but provide teachers and other staff with independent feedback to help them continue to improve learning outcomes for students. All schools have a review at least every four years. Our review was conducted on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week. We look forward to sharing the key findings from the review in the coming weeks.

2 Prep enrolments for 2018 News from the Junior School Deputy Principal Mrs Helen Forbes Enrolments for Prep 2018 have opened and it is important to contact the school if you intend to enrol a student for next year. Please contact the office and the administration assistants will assist you with the necessary information and paperwork that needs to be completed as well as information relating to our Pre-Prep program. We are having a short orientation session on Thursday evening 27 th July 5.30pm-6.15pm and a repeat session on Friday morning 9.30am-10.15am. This session will include a tour of the school, information about our Pre-Prep sessions and a walk-through our current Prep classrooms during lessons. This allows parents to see prep in action. If you will be attending one of the orientation sessions please contact the office. Striving for Success Students are back into their classroom routines and working hard as they strive for success in their schoolwork. The following overviews reflect the learning in English and Science: Prep English Rhyme This term our Preps are listening to and providing responses to a number of rhyming texts. This will help them develop their letters and sounds and many common words and visual patterns. Students will enjoy reading familiar rhyming stories as well as new rhyming stories. Please take time to enjoy some rhyming chants, stories and words with your child whenever possible. Their assessment will require them to innovate on a rhyme and recite a rhyming story for their classmates. They will also provide gestures to go with their presentation and write and draw a personal response to a rhyming story. Science Prep students are observing and recording weather types. They will use this knowledge to analyse how weather affects our daily lives as well as how animals and plants are affected. They will be required to represent and record the weather. Year 1 English Create and present a Character Students are learning about how authors create characters and that animal characters are often depicted as having human qualities. Students need to be able to connect to these characters by sharing their own similar experiences and by showing understanding of characters actions and behaviours. Our year one students will be required to complete a written and spoken character interview as their main assessment of this unit. To do this they will need to know the difference between a question and a command and statement and be able to ask questions and listen to answers as they interview their classmates. Science Year One will be studying and observing our skies and landscapes this term. They will be reflecting and analysing the changes of the sky and landscapes and recording their observations. Year 2 English Exploring Procedural texts Year two students are using Roald Dahl s novel George s Marvellous Medicine to analyse characters. They will learn how to write a procedure, the use of comma s in a list and the appropriate words to use when describing characters. They will need to sequence a jumbled procedural text as part of their assessment for this unit as well as writing and presenting a multimodal procedure to present to their teacher and classmates. Science The term s unit for year two science is titled Familiar living things. Our students will study the life stages of animals and plants and to use this knowledge of life stages in everyday life. Year 3 English Examining Stories from different perspectives Year three students are examining myths and Aboriginal Dreaming stories. They will learn to analyse verbs, clauses, sentence structure, evaluative language and compare and contrast different myths. For their assessment they will need to answer comprehension questions to show understanding of the texts, analyse a rhyming text and to present a retell from another perspective. Students are using Dr Suess The Lorax to tell the story from the Lorax s perspective. Science Year three s unit this term allows students to investigate how heat can be produced and transferred. Students will use conductors and insulators and read and use thermometers. They explore factors affecting heat transference and the safety practices required. Students will be able to use this knowledge to analyse real life applications of heat production and transference. Visual Arts Line, shape, colour and texture This term our students will be engaged in a Visual Arts program where they will be given an opportunity to focus on building their skills and knowledge involving the visual components of colour, line, shape, and texture. Students will also learn about noted artists and their work. At the end of the program our hall will be transformed into an Art Gallery where the fine work our students have created will be on display. Please drop in and view this exhibition at the end of this term. Sandy Strait has been running their intensive Visual Arts program for some years. The commitment of the students and teachers of The Arts has resulted in a collection of outstanding artwork.

3 News from the Senior School Deputy Principal Mr Bruce Jackson Inter-House Athletics A big thank you to Mr Baldwin for coordinating another successful athletics carnival last term and Congratulations to Kondari for achieving first place. Mr Baldwin is presently analysing carnival results and holding further trials to select our athletics team to compete in the Zone Athletics Carnival on the 28th July. USHS Come and Try Day A big thank you to the staff at USHS who invited our Year 6 students to a Come & Try day at their school last term. Students were given a taste of what high school life is like and participated in activities that included dance, home economics and manual arts. Visual Arts This term our students will be engaged in a Visual Arts program where they will be given an opportunity to focus on building their skills and knowledge involving the visual components of colour, line, shape, and texture. Students will also learn about noted artists and their work. At the end of the program our hall will be transformed into an Art Gallery where the fine work our students have created will be on display. NAIDOC Week As part of our NAIDOC week celebrations last week, we spent some time participating in a variety of activities that focussed on indigenous culture. Activities included: Storytelling & collage making, tracking animals, artefact treasure hunt and learning some Butchulla. A huge thank you Mrs Steyger for the fantastic job she did in coordinating our NAIDOC week celebrations. More Mathematics Ideas from Michael Ymer There are a number of general principles which you might keep in mind when you are helping your children. People learn, not so much by being told things, as by working things out for themselves and linking new ideas to ideas that they already have. You can help by asking your children questions, letting them work out answers for themselves, and then discussing their answers with them. Some suggested activities The following are some activities that you can do with your children. Some are general and some relate to specific aspects of the mathematics curriculum. REMEMBERING It is helpful for children to get practice at remembering numbers and other information. Examples of the type of information which we commonly try to remember are: Telephone numbers: when children are young you might ask them to repeat back to you 2 or 3 numbers in a row; as they get older they should be able to repeat back to you longer strings, and even to remember some numbers such as their own phone number and those of their grandparents Addresses: help the children to learn their own address and others such as their grandparents Car registration numbers Birthdays: children can learn the birth dates in your family, and also those of other relatives and friends Times of special events.
