1 Secondary Physical Education Year 8 Course Outline: The course is not based on an examination syllabus, but it is assessed internally within the school. The course is designed to foster enjoyment and confidence in physical activity by providing students with an opportunity to take part in a number of activities. The Physical Education programme follows a common core of sporting activities throughout the whole school. Skill acquisition is emphasized in the early years, together with opportunities to use a variety of individual and team game situations. Essential aspects of this programme include racquet and net games, team games, swimming, and fitness. The programme is balanced through the inclusion of contact and non-contact sports, a wide variety of games incorporating team and individual activities and elements of physical fitness. Course schedule: The course consists of two 40 minute lessons held consecutively per week. Course Description: The programme contributes to the total development of the individual physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. Students discover themselves through activities which are not only enjoyable but also contribute to healthy living. The course aims to encourage and promote an appreciation of others and develop knowledge and understanding of the physical activities which encourage students to become responsible learners and be able to make valued judgments about their own active lifestyle within the community in which they live. Course Aims: The aims are to enable candidates to: achieve enjoyment through successful and challenging physical activity; promote an interest in, and an understanding of, physical activity; develop motor skills in a range of physical activities, necessary to enable students to participate successfully in a variety of physical activities, success being measured in relation to the individuals personal development; develop aesthetic appreciation through the experience of bodily movement; demonstrate skills and techniques readily applicable in more complex patterns;
2 demonstrate good knowledge of correct procedure appropriate to the activity; create opportunities for each individual to experience a sense of challenge, achievement and self-fulfillment in varying environments; provide opportunities for pupils to learn to participate, co-operate and contribute within group situations; encourage an understanding and application of basic principles of physical fitness, health and hygiene; provide the experience and incentive to pursue an active, creative and purposeful lifestyle; Curriculum delivery: During the course of one year students will be introduced to fitness tests twice a year, swimming for a whole term and a minimum of two other sports such as: basketball, football, badminton, handball and volleyball. As PE has one double lesson a week and to ensure a clear development and progression occurs, the cycle of the team sports will occur over two years. Fitness tests include: Multipurpose fitness test, Cooper s Test, Sit and reach, Standing Vertical jump, Standing long jump, Pushups, Sit ups, 25 m sprints and step ups. Secondary Physical Education Assessment Objectives (AO): In Physical Education there is no final exam, however the following assessment objectives will be used throughout the course of the year, in order for students and parents to keep abreast their attainments and goals. AO1 Skill acquisition Learn and perform individual skills Apply to game or performance situation AO2 Knowledge of rules and regulations Learn rules and regulations Apply them to a practical situation
3 AO3 Tactical awareness and application Show understanding of tactics Apply tactics to a game situation or performance AO4 Health and fitness Show improvement of personal health through regular exercise Improve knowledge and ability through practical application and participation AO5 Teamwork and cooperation Demonstrate the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship Show the ability to work and support others AO6 Organisation and effort Be organized for each lesson Show willingness to learn and improve AO7 Safe Practices Show an understanding of what safe practices are through knowledge, understanding and application of learnt practices. Note:*Not all assessment objectives may be accomplished due to inclement weather, disruption of facilities for other school functions and or time constraints.* Descriptions of the Core Physical Education Activities: Basketball: Basketball skills include the development from basic techniques and skills to more advanced concepts in the later grades. Students learn the skills of passing, receiving, dribbling, shooting, rebounding defense, offence, footwork, rules and scoring. Each students will be capable of applying (to their own ability level) each of the above techniques, at the appropriate time, in small or full sided conditioned or competitive games.
4 Volleyball: Volleyball skills include the development from basic techniques and skills to more advanced concepts in the later grades. Students learn the skills of sets/flicks, digs/bumps, underarm serve, overarm serve, blocking and spiking, defense, offence, footwork, rules and scoring. Each student will be capable of applying (to their own ability level) each of the above techniques, at the appropriate time, in small or full sided conditioned or competitive game. Football: Basic skills, techniques and principles are introduced so that small-sided games can be played from the outset. Small-sided games are emphasized up to thirteen years of age, so physical size and power are secondary in favour of skill acquisition. As the student s progress to the upper secondary they will be expected to show special awareness and the ability to implement strategic skills and tactics within the parameters of various games. Handball: Basic skills, techniques and principles are introduced so that small-sided games can be played from the outset. Small-sided games are emphasized so physical size and powers are secondary in favour of skill acquisition. After which full sided games will occur to develop tactical and spatial awareness. Student s participating in Handball show improved special awareness, cooperation and communication, as the skills involved are less complex than other ball skills and therefore allow students to develop their understanding of more complex tactics and develop confidence Swimming: Students are taught to swim at least 25 meters to ensure that all students are proficient enough to feel safe in water. Students are taught the backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle and butterfly. They will also develop an understanding of the laws of competitive swimming and personal survival techniques. Fitness: Strong emphasis on the importance of fitness is covered through various types of exercise aerobic fitness, endurance, explosive strength, circuit training and stretching. This activity will occur throughout the year, starting and ending with individual fitness tests for each student. Badminton: Badminton skills include the development of three shots: lobs, drop shots and smash and the development of the forehand and backhand serve. Basic techniques and skills to more advanced concepts in the later grades. Students learn the skills as well as rules and scoring. Each student will be given the opportunity to develop their
5 capacity to apply (to their own ability level) each of the above techniques, at the appropriate time, in singles or doubles games.
