1 Section 9993/9994 MATH 078/178 SPRING 2017 CALCULUS FOR BUSINESS, SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES (01/30-06/05) INSTRUCTOR: Vi Trang TIME AND ROOM: TTH 12:30-03:20pm H-139 OFFICE: STEM Achievement Center Office Hours: By Appointment COURSE DESCRIPTION Math 078 Math 178 Intermediate Algebra For Math 178 Calculus For Business, Social And Behavioral Sciences A review of the core prerequisite skills, Presents a study of the techniques of calculus competencies, and concepts needed in with emphasis placed on the application of business calculus. Intended for majors in these concepts to business and management science, technology, engineering, and related problems. The applications of mathematics who are concurrently enrolled in MATH 178, Calculus for Business, Social derivatives and integrals of functions and Behavioral Sciences at Cuyamaca including polynomials, rational, exponential College. Topics include: a review of and logarithmic functions are studied. Not computational skills developed in open to students with credit in MATH 180. intermediate algebra, factoring, operations on rational and radical expressions, linear, exponential and logarithmic expressions and equations, an introduction to matrices, functions including composition and inverses, and an in-depth focus on quadratic functions. This course is appropriate for students who are confident in their graphing and beginning algebra skills. A graphing calculator is required for this course. Not open to students with credit in MATH 180. Pass/No Pass only. Non-degree applicable.

2 PREREQUISITES Mathematics 078: Appropriate placement. Co-requisite: Concurrent enrollment in MATH 178 at Cuyamaca College Mathematics 178: C grade or higher or Pass in MATH 110 or equivalent (MATH 103 does not meet the prerequisite) STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1) Calculate derivatives for polynomial, rational, exponential or logarithmic functions involving constants, sums, differences, products, quotients or the chain rule. 2) Apply derivatives to solve application problems from business or the natural or social sciences. 3) Use graphical, numerical or analytical methods to solve real-world problems from business or the natural or social sciences. 4) Calculate antiderivatives involving power, exponential, and logarithmic functions. 5) Use substitution to calculate antiderivatives. 6) Apply matrices and their properties to solve applications from business or the natural or social sciences. REQUIRED TEXT & SUPPLIES 1. Applied Calculus, 5th Edition, Hughes/Gleason/Lock/Flath/ et al. 2. WileyPlus code: This will come with your textbook if you buy the book from the bookstore. If not, you will need to buy a code online or at the bookstore. Online is cheaper. My WileyPlus Setup: To create an account you will need: 1. Internet connection - go to 2. An access code that comes with your textbook 3. Course ID# Your personal address 3. Calculator: A graphing calculator is required. I will be using Ti-84 in class. 4. Notebook paper, graph paper and a binder are required. Pencil, big eraser, highlighter, ruler, and color pencils/pens are optional Calculators CANNOT be shared on exams, so please bring your own calculator.

3 ATTENDANCE Since your grade is based in part on your class work, missing all or even part of a class could negatively affect your overall grade. Math 078 and Math 178 are treated as a single course combo. You will experience the course as one class and will be unaware when Math 078 stops and Math 178 begins on any given day. Consequently, if you drop or are dropped from either course, you will be dropped from the course combo (i.e. both courses). Also, I reserve the right to drop you from this course combo for missing three or more class meetings (missing roll counts as missing the class meeting). However, if you quit attending class, you should not assume that I will drop you. Should you choose to drop, ultimately it is your responsibility to officially withdraw. EXAMS There will be FOUR exams and a comprehensive final. No exam score will be dropped and there are no retakes. Exams will cover material from the lecture notes, homework problems, and chapter reviews. If you miss an exam, you will receive a zero for it. Make up exams may ONLY be taken by PRIOR ARRANGEMENT or in the case of a DOCUMENTED emergency and only if you contact me on or before the exam day. No cell phones may be used on exams. HOMEWORK (Computer Lab Work / Paper & Pencil work) & CLASS WORK: Online Homework You will be doing part of your homework online on the website Starting Week 2 you will have homework due. All assignments are posted well in advance; it is your responsibility to regularly check your computer account for the assignments and their due dates. Homework will be collected on the date of the exam. You can do your homework on campus computers or on your home computer. Deadlines will only be changed if wileyplus.com goes down for more than 12 hours. No late homework accepted. Note: Please obey the computer lab rules and remember that food and drink are not allowed in the Math Lab and STEM center. Class work: Class work consists of both individual and group activities. Some (but not all) of your in-class activities will be graded. For the in-class group work, each group member should complete the work and keep a copy for review. However, I may randomly select only one group member's work to grade for the entire group. Again, the group members present will earn the same grade for the activity/group-work. I do not accept late work for in-class assignments and you cannot make-up missed in-class assignments (so if you miss class, you will earn a zero for any in-class work collected on that day).

4 AFFECTIVE SUPPORT ASSIGNMENTS: These assignments may include reading articles, watching videos, writing and reflecting on certain concepts and ideas regarding the affective support. No late work accepted CLASS PERFORMANCE: Students are expected to complete the following assignments and assessments: Assignment Frequency Points Total Points Possible Online Homework Affective Domain Assignment Exams Final Exam Total 700 ASSIGNING GRADES: To earn a grade of Pass in Math 078, you must earn a grade of C or higher in the concurrentenrollment Math 178 class. Grading Scale A+ >92% A % A- 90% B % B % B- 80% C % C 70% D 60% F <60% If you take the course P/NP: Pass is equivalent to: Equal or above 70% Grades will be rounded with the following guidelines: rounds to 389 while rounds to 390. ALL requests for an opportunity to improve your grade due to personal circumstances will be denied. At the end of the semester, I submit the grade you earned in the class. This grade may be different than the one you wanted or needed in the class. I do not negotiate grades based on personal circumstances. Please respect this policy. FINAL EXAM The final is MANDATORY and CUMULATIVE and will be given Thursday, June 1, 1:00 PM 3:00 PM, Room H-139 DON T MAKE TRAVEL PLANS THAT CONFLICT WITH THIS DATE!!!!!

5 TUTORING To support your efforts to succeed in this class, it is highly recommended that you utilize the free math tutoring services available in the STEM Center (the Tutoring Center). Students needing additional help to achieve the learning outcomes for this class are encouraged to enroll in Math 198, Supervised Tutoring. The H-building STEM center tutor station will provide students with an add code to enroll in this free non-credit class. Instructors and student tutors are available to answer homework questions, give confidence, and support math students. Students also have access to graphing calculators, textbooks, instructional videos, and computer tutorial programs. Computers are also available for student use. Hours of the STEM Center: M Th 9:00 am 4:00 pm, Friday 9:00 12:00 pm. CLASSROOM CONDUCT Class time is valuable. You are expected to be courteous to each other and to the instructor. You will be asked to leave the class for display of behavior the instructor deems as disruptive to the class environment. Take care of all business before you arrive to class. It is a major interruption to leave the classroom while the instructor is lecturing. Remember that YOU are in charge of your education, so take responsibility and do your best to learn the material. If you have a question, ask it. If you don t understand something, say so! Any question that will help you to better understand the material is not stupid. Because of this, I expect you to be patient and respectful of others who are asking questions in an effort to do well. Please turn off and put away your cell phones during class. Putting away your phone means that it is off your desk and away in your backpack. Therefore there is absolutely NO CELL PHONE USE, WEB SURFING or TEXTING allowed in class. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Cheating and plagiarism (using as one's own ideas writings, materials, or images of someone else without acknowledgement or permission) can result in any one of a variety of sanctions. Such penalties may range from an adjusted grade on the particular exam, paper, project, or assignment (all of which may lead to a failing grade in the course) to, under certain conditions, suspension or expulsion from a class, program or the college. The majority of students who do not complete this class are students that miss in excess of 2 class meetings. Feel free to ask questions any time during class. FORM A STUDY GROUP. Meet outside of class with 2 or 3 students on a regular basis and work on assignments. Exchange phone numbers and address and stay in contact for help. USE THE TUTORS. The tutors in the Math Study Center are there to help you if you need it on a walk in basis. COMPLETE ALL ASSIGNMENTS. Complete your assignments by practicing a little bit each day. You can learn, develop skills, and retain concepts only with practice. MyWileyPlus has great resources to help learn the material. Explore the options and take advantage of them.
