1 First Peoples Box of Treasures Cultural Awareness Program A collaborative project of Victoria Native Friendship Centre & Royal British Columbia Museum Program description: The First Peoples Box of Treasures Cultural Awareness Program represents the culmination of approximately 8 years of research, program testing and evaluation. Data collected from both the Victoria Native Friendship Centre and the Royal BC Museum, identified gaps in the delivery of a collaborative cultural awareness program entitled, A Day s Journey, which was presented to the Greater Victoria School Districts over a period of four years. One of the more substantial gaps identified was the method of facilitation. It was determined that in order to provide a program that accurately conveys the cultures, traditions and values of Aboriginal Peoples, it is essential to maintain an Aboriginal presence in the facilitation approach. An additional gap in programming was the necessity to respect visual and practical learning in addition to the theoretical and academic. This gap has been addressed by providing the tour of the Royal BC Museum from a First Nation perspective. This point has also been addressed through the pre-scheduled follow-up activity in the classroom, where students are provided with the appropriate amount of time to complete and appreciate the cultural significance and teachings surrounding the activity. The final gap was identified as the inadequate amount of time allocated to present the information. Initially, the program was presented within a two hour time frame. In consideration of the amount of information to be shared as well as the various ways in which it is received, it became necessary to present the program in three parts. This new process is time effective and also conducive to Traditional Aboriginal practices for both teaching and learning. This program has been developed to address the following Prescribed Learning Outcomes of the BC School Curriculum for Grade 4 and incorporates Prescribed Learning Outcomes (K-5) from Shared Learnings: Integrating BC Aboriginal Content K-10 and the Greater Victoria School District s First Nations Education Division: First Nations in B.C. Comparing Interior and Coastal Cultures. This program also serves to support the directives associated with the enhancement agreements, signed by the Greater Victoria School District s and the Ministry of Education and is thereby adaptable to accommodate grades K-12. There is no cost for participation in the program but donations to the Victoria Native Friendship Centre are welcome and appreciated. All donated revenue is re-circulated into program expenditures, i.e.: the purchase of cultural materials and supplies. The First Peoples Box of Treasures Cultural Awareness Program is offered from September to June of the school year. Teachers are encouraged to complete an evaluation form following their participation in the program that will serve to continue upgrading the program. Each year, upon conclusion of the program, the facilitator will provide a statistical and narrative, summary report to the Victoria Native Friendship Centre and the Royal BC Museum. 1

PART 3 Classroom Visit - Cultural Activity Presentation Program Length: 1.5 hours. The following are a few examples of the options available to Teachers for the class activity. Each activity has been designed to convey a different Aboriginal Teaching. Other activities that compliment a specific area of study are also available and can be prepared and offered as well. All materials and supplies are prepared and provided by the Victoria Native Friendship Centre. 1. Potlatch Pouches: This has been the most popular selection with the focus of the lesson centering on the importance of giving vs. receiving. This activity includes information regarding the origin and meaning of the word POTLATCH; the Potlatch system and the associated cultural protocols. The activity requires participants to sew the pouch together while applying a button, patch and ribbon. Students will be encouraged to think of someone special to give the pouch to when it is completed. A simpler version of this activity is available for primary levels. 2. Print Making: The focus of this activity is the importance of artwork in relation to oral traditions. Using tiles that have been prepared to represent different animal images in the style of the Coastal First Nations, participants will be guided through the process of making prints. The myths and legends associated with each image will be shared. 3. Totem Poles (Spirit Poles): The cultural significance of Totem Poles or Spirit Poles is the focus for this activity. Participants will select from a series of animals stamps, designed by First Nation artists, and will create a totem pole using the stamps provided. Participants will then write the story/legend about the animals they selected for their pole. 4. Bentwood Boxes: The multiple uses of these boxes and how they were made is the focus for this activity. Participants will be given a specially designed cardboard box to decorate as their own bentwood box. Culturally appropriate images are supplied to assist with preparing the boxes. 5. Beaver Tail Totes: This is the newest addition to the cultural activities list and includes storytelling from the Interior First Nations cultures of BC. The activity requires participants to sew a small pouch together that represents the tail of a beaver, including the cross hatch markings. This third opportunity to interact with the participants allows the facilitator to provide the appropriate amount of time to relay the information; gage the level of retention for the information that has been shared; and leave a lasting impression that will encourage further investigation, all of which are traditional methods of knowing and learning for Aboriginal Peoples. 5
