3 Final Project 3 It is recommended that you to obtain a mark of 60% or more in this Final Project before doing the final exam for this course. Instructions Fill out the section titled identification. Write all your answers in the booklet. Do not forget to proofread all your answers. Submit this evaluation situation to your teacher if you are following the course at an adult education centre or send it to your tutor if you are following a distance course. We recommend that you keep a photocopy of your work, just to be safe. When you receive your corrected copy, read your teacher s or tutor s comments carefully. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask for feedback. 3
4 ANG Communicating Information Final Project 3: Sharing an Apartment This final project for Chapter 3 will be evaluated by your teacher or tutor. Make sure you do the work completely and seriously. There are two parts to this final project: a preparation and a written part. The table used to evaluate the written part is given to you below. You can use a dictionary and the Reference Booklet. Ready? Here s the situation: Your work hours have been cut and your budget is tight. You decide to get a roommate to share the rent and expenses. Your friend Leslie might be interested, so you will have to explain the details of apartment sharing in writing. Part 1: Preparing A. Read the texts about two experiences in apartment sharing. Summarize or simplify each text: identify the main ideas and the specific points and details. Experience 1 Last year, I shared my apartment with a university student named Gerry. Gerry was studying accounting and I was working at a hotel. He is a really nice guy. We shared the apartment for one year, because we were both on a tight budget. Gerry is very neat, clean and responsible, and so am I. He is a quiet guy and doesn t play any loud music. He moved to Ottawa after he graduated. I really enjoyed sharing an apartment with him and I would recommend him to anyone. 4
5 Final Project 3 Experience 2 Last summer, I shared my apartment with a young woman, for two months. It didn t work out very well. She was very messy and didn t take care of the apartment. She left clothes, books, shopping bags and a lot of stuff all around the apartment. The neighbours told me that she played loud music at night, sometimes came in late, and often parked her car in someone else s parking spot. I won t share my apartment with her again! B. Classify the advantages and disadvantages of sharing an apartment. Advantages Disadvantages 5

7 Final Project 3 Part 2: Making Connections and Writing About... You may have to hand in this work to your teacher or tutor. If this is the case, your work for Questions 1 and 2 is worth 20% of your final mark: Question 1 checks your understanding and Question 2 checks your capacity to reinvest your understanding and generalize beyond the texts. Your work for Question 3 is worth 80% of your final mark and evaluates your written production.
