1 Key Stage 4 Curriculum Grid Spring term 2016 English Yr11 Miss Betts English Y11 Mrs Sing English Y10 Miss Betts English Y10 Mrs Sing Maths Yr11 Set 1 Learners will be looking at the specimen exam papers, ready for their exams In June. Having looked at the papers, we will embrace a journey of consolidating fundamental reading comprehension skills and basic writing skills, as well as developing our skillset with higher level skills to ensure that learners are confident and competent in their English skills. Pupils will begin a project on Animal Farm by George Orwell. They will research historical, political and sociological elements of the novel and look at the differences between the story and the animated version. They will read a range of fiction and non-fiction texts regarding the issues raised. Pupils will write their own allegorical story basing the topic on morals and fairy tales. They will read Aesop s Fables and a selection of well known fairy-tales. The completed stories will be collated into a class story book. Learners will begin to explore the novel A Monster Calls. Through using the novel as a stimulus, learners will consolidate their reading comprehension skills whilst developing their inference and deduction skills, higher level of thinking and questioning skills. We will also be consolidating basic writing skills whilst introducing higher level skills to enhance written work. All of the work that we do will be based around the GCSE obejctives. Pupils will continue to work towards an Entry Level qualification. They will read a range of non-fiction texts and develop their reading comprehension skills. They will learn about exam technique and will assess others and their own answers to enable progress. They will take a final Reading assessment in reading non-fiction texts.. The pupils are continuing to work towards their OCR Foundation GCSE exam. This term they Pupils will continue to work towards an Entry Level qualification. They will read a range of fiction texts and further develop their reading comprehension skills, using skills acquired throughout Y10. They will learn about exam technique and will assess others and their own answers to enable progress. They will prepare to take a final Reading assessment in reading fiction texts in Summer 1. The pupils are continuing to work towards their OCR Foundation GCSE exam. This term they Pupils should have their log in details in their planners. Students will fundamentally develop their basic literacy skills, in reading and writing. Simultaneously, they will be developing many key skills such as communication skills, selfmanagement skills, as well as elements of emotional intelligence and optimism. Drugs affect our body chemistry. Medical drugs are developed and tested before being used to relieve illness or disease. Some people use drugs recreationally. They will undertake two short projects- one about cooking with pastry and the second is to be confirmed. Y11 will be building up to their final assessment work for Entry Level or Level 1. Some time will be spent developing skills and some time given to practising their final dishes. They will need to plan, produce outcomes and reflect on their learning. Spring 1 Enterprise. Students research different Enterprises and work as a team to plan an enterprise initiative which they will put into practice during the Spring term. They will analyse their previous project and work on improving their satisfaction and profit in another project. ICT spring 2. Students will be finalising their coursework folders to ensure that work is complete and to an adequate standard to fulfil exam requirements. Please encourage your child to get involved with the preparation and clearing up of meals at. All skills taught within this unit are life skills that are relevant to the wider world beyond school. They are skills that can be transferred to support independence. ICT Students will learn to develop their information technology and business awareness skills as well as elements of self-

6 Y10 Computing/ Enterprise Computing spring 1. This half term, students will be working on the Trends in Computing strand of their course. They will have to identify, and describe, a technology that interests them. They will then be required to research into the changes that have taken place within this technology, with examples. Finally, students will have to think about the impact of their technology on society. Spring 2 Enterprise. Students will begin the assessment coursework for an entry Level Award in Exploring enterprise skills. They will look at Enterprising individuals and identify what makes them Enterprising. They will undertake a personal skills audit and explore enterprise skill, qualities and attitudes. Students will assess their Autumn Enterprise project and reflect on their successes and failings. management and teamwork Enterprise Students will be considering the real-life skills that they are developing and how these apply in the workplace. They will investigate job roles and businesses that have been successful as well as taking on roles and acquiring skills in their own Enterprise business. Y11 PE Y10 PE Students will be completing the final assessments for the OCR Entry Level Certificate in PE. They will be finalising their practical performance in at least 2 skill areas. Students will also analyse a performance of another candidate and suggest ways to improve the performance. Students will begin the OCR Entry Level Certificate in PE. They will begin training in at least 2 sports of their choice, chosen from a range of practical activities. Students will be marked and assessed against 3 performance levels. Encourage your child to be as active as possible, aiming for at least half an hour of heart rate raising activity every day. Investigate local sport and leisure facilities, what is available in your local area? What help is available for those on a low income / with disabilities to access sport? Students will develop a wider understanding of how their bodies work. Simultaneously, they will be developing many key skills such as confidence, team work, problem solving, determination, leadership and optimism to aid them in future life.

7 Year 11 P4C/SRE Year 10 SRE/P4C Y11 Arts Award Spring 1 P4C Continuing to develop the pupils skills to debate and discuss a range of issues and to develop a deeper understanding and ability to reason and argue ideas. Encourage the development of thinking skills from being a caring, creative, collaborative thinker towards being a critical thinker; asking questions what if... There will be a range of stimuli that may link either to topical news, a story with moral issues, video clips that stimulate discussion through to links to other curriculum areas. Spring 1 SRE - students will complete a Module on Feelings and Relationships. This includes : Happiness, Anger, Fear and Feeling Low. We will explore how to recognise these feelings, how to manage them and how they can influence Relationships and understanding of ourselves and our behaviour. Shakespeare Challenge (Bronze) Inspiration Students research actors and directors who have Shakespearian experience. They look at their lives, careers and contribution to the celebration of Shakespeare s works. They will record their findings in their Portfolio. Spring 2 - SRE Sexual health and relationships. Students will work in groups according to gender and level of understanding on puberty, revising fertilisation, contraception, pregnancy and birth, healthy and happy relationships and choices. This will involve open and honest conversations about sex and give students an opportunity to ask any questions. Spring 2 P4C Continuing to develop the pupils skills to debate and discuss a range of issues and to develop a deeper understanding and ability to reason and argue ideas. Shakespeare Challenge (Bronze) Students will visit the RSC in Stratford upon Avon and take part in a workshop with staff from the theatre.. They will research aspects of Shakespeare s life and visit places of interest recording their views and images of their visit in their Portfolio. *There may be an opportunity for /site/?id=65 Students will explore emotions and behaviours and discuss appropriate behaviours in and around others including in a workplace and out in the Community. Students will learn about different jobs and roles within a theatre environment and research professional actors and directors, gaining an understanding of the skills, education and experiences with lead to this career choice.

8 students to see another performance of Shakespeare s Antony and Cleopatra at the RSC in Stratford. Y10 Arts Award Y11 Art Arts Award (Bronze) Students will begin to explore the actual art of photography. This will consist of learning how to frame shots effectively, how to take different sorts of photographs, how to take good photographs. Learners will continue to develop their portfolio with the images that they take. Students will be continuing to complete their GCSE Art portfolio, under the supervision of their new teacher, to ensure that it fulfils the WJEC requirements. More information can be gained on request. Y10 Art Year 10 will embark on an ABC Awards accredited course, under the guidance of their new teacher. The course will cover a variety of art based skills from this the pupils will produce a portfolio of work. More information can be gained on request. Y11 Land Studies Students will be assessing the school garden and coming up with a list of jobs to be done. They will then undertake the tasks and keep a diary of the work they have done. Please encourage students to help out in their own gardens. It would be great if they could plant some bulbs at - in borders or in pots. There are plenty of gardening programs on the TV that they could watch, which would help with their general knowledge. Y10 DT Students will design and make a steady hand game. This will involve following a basic design process. Students will produce their idea by cutting and shaping the material they have chosen, this will involve a simple construction method. Students will be introduced to thyristor latch circuit allowing for a buzzer and/or LED light to be included in the design. 9 Y10 Music Y11 Music This term we will be developing new instrumental skills to be able to play with others in a band situation and work towards a performance. This will be on a theme chosen by the students and rehearsals will allow personal skills development towards Unit 1- playing a part within a group. This term the students will develop different bands and performance groups to build new skills and try new songs. This will give extra evidence for unit 1 making sounds/playing part of a group. L1 Tech will record the material as they require a recording studio session for their portfolio. Please allow personal practice and specific listening so the students can choose material that they enjoy and want to play. Try to help learning words to a song. Students will be looking at life ready areas 3, 4 and 7. They will be looking at pupil needs, links to careers, and links with FE for progression.
