Vision Statement Where Everyone Learns and Belongs Mission Statement We are making a change to our mission statement, but it has not been finalized yet. The Claresholm school community works to develop literate, life-long learners who are: Creative and critical thinkers Responsible and self-directed Ethical and involved citizens Able to adapt to change Team-oriented Effective communicators While achieving the provincially defined outcomes. Our standard of excellence is lower than the province. We need to further explore what is accounting for this deviation.

An example of this is Student Participation in Clubs. We have specifically designed Discovery Days where every student is part of a different club. This was not reflected in our results. We will make a concentrated effort to explain questions to students as they are going through the survey. Areas to Watch Positive Sense of Belonging is lower than provincial averages. Response: We will be continuing with a lunch program for students that focuses on relationships and identity. Health classes will also continue to address concerns about
7 relationships and belonging. Our learning support team will continue to identify students at risk and put in place supports to address concerns. High Anxiety in girls is higher than the provincial average. Response: Our learning support team will continue to identify students at risk and put in place supports to address concerns. As a staff, we will work on strategies to alleviate stresses tied to academic success. It is important to note that this number is an improvement over last year. We will continue to work on our strategies to help our students deal with anxiety. We have eliminated all areas of concern, but need to stay focused and continue to try and improve Acceptable levels to Good and higher.

As a result, we have attempted to address this in a few ways. First, we have divided this group of students into three classes instead of two. This will allow teachers more time to work with students targeting individual needs. We have added resources to our guided reading program. More focused instruction will allow these students to better achieve their reading targets. Grade 4 teachers have been focusing in the area of mathematics. Targeted supports have been put in place to support all those students who are struggling academically. Programs like Accelerated Reader, Guided Reading, Daily 5, Reading Eggs, and Raz Kids have been implemented school wide to assist all students improve their literacy skills.
9 School Goals Goal #1: Develop a Mission and Vision to help guide our practice and improve student achievement. At West Meadow Elementary, we have an exceptional staff that works hard to meet the needs of our students. There are times, however, when do not all agree where we should go as a school. It has been many years since the school developed its joint mission statement along with the other schools in Claresholm. It is time for our school to develop its own identity and direction. Our goal for this year is to develop a mission and vision that we all know and believe. By doing so, we will have better focus, be able to work more collaboratively, and see increase in our student achievement. Strategies We will dedicate the time necessary to work collaboratively to come up with a vision and mission. We will enlist the support from sources not part of our school community. This will allow full particiation by all staff without the feeling of it being directed. Not only are we concerned with how our students do while they are here, but it is also important to make sure we have strong transitions from grade to grade, school to school, and beyond. We will continue to support current practices and work to develop stronger transitions for our students moving forward.
