1 HILLVIEW STATE SCHOOL Hillview State School Newsletter DO TO SUCCEED So often you find that the students you re trying to inspire are the ones that end up inspiring you. Sean Junkins These amazing year 6 students took time out to come and see what the P-2 kids have been up to. The Juniors proudly showed their Year 6 role models their projects and other pieces they have been working on. As I took a back seat and let the P-2 students take the floor, I saw the most heart-warming interactions between the senior and junior students. The Juniors were teaching the seniors and they were responding with Wow, I didn t know that! and Really! How interesting. The seniors were very positive, asked thoughtful and meaningful questions, listened intently to their younger peers and gave them sincere feedback. When they left, I realised what a beautiful example of peer tutoring I had just witnessed. I had not set up activities or learning stations, simply made time for sharing. The students had interacted so constructively that I was reminded of the many benefits of peer tutoring; direct interaction between students promoting active learning, peer teachers reinforcing their own learning by instructing others and peers and students sharing a similar discourse, allowing for greater understanding. Ultimately, I was inspired to organise for more sharing time!

2 HILLVIEW STATE SCHOOL 2 Community Party Only a few more comfortable sleeps until the Winter community party and Mission Australia Winter Sleep out. We are looking forward to sharing a hot meal and some delicious desserts with our family and friends and will be showing The Secret Life of Pets and Night At The Museum 1 and 2 for the students in the P-2 room, to excite them about our upcoming Queensland Museum trip. Where and when: Friday 16 th June at 5.30pm Please bring: A hot dish (curry, stew, and casserole), dessert to share and pillows and sleeping bags for the kids. Camp 2017 We are headed back to Tallebudgera Beach School in October, an Education Queensland Outdoor Education Centre, and the largest Surf Education School in Australia. Aquatic Adventure, Surf Safety, Personal Development, Problem Solving, Team Building, Leadership and Indigenous Culture activities dominate the Beach School program. We are very lucky to have such an excellent facility so close. Surf safety is extremely important to all Australians, as swimming at our beautiful beaches is a large part of our culture. Hillview students will be among the more than 8,000 students that will attend camps this year at what is the best aquatic adventure site in Australia. How exciting! Inspector Gadget donations Next term, we will again be doing Inspector Gadget as one of our Gifted and Talented clubs. We would love any donations of old machines or appliances that we can pull apart and inspect. Anything that has screws, moving parts or guts is great. This club is a fascinating one for those students that love machines and gadgets and the greater the variety, the better. I ll never forget the time spent trying to get a rice cooker apart and the only thing that was inside was a heating element! Please search your sheds (and Grandad s!) to find cool stuff, otherwise I end up raiding sidewalk pickups and the dump!!! Any big donations can be left under the residence, or smaller ones can be left in the 3456 classroom. Thank you.

3 HILLVIEW STATE SCHOOL 3 News from P12 What a brilliant semester the P-2 children have had! As we prepare for the winter holidays, we are making sure all our projects are finished. We finished making a fact and opinion game about our favourite native animals. The year 1 and 2 students researched facts and wrote opinions on their favourite animal. They typed them up into Microsoft word and then ed these to me. We edited them together, printed them out and attached them to pictures we found in old encyclopedia from the Op shop (Very fitting being the Animal Welfare League, proceeds going back to animals!). The kids really enjoyed playing the game with the year 6 students and they were suitably impressed! We have also finished our Native animal projects. Year 1 and 2 students developed informative posters on the computers and the prep students created interactive lap books. Be sure to check these out at the community party, I know I learnt a thing or two! Besides finishing projects, we have taken time to stop and reflect on the things we have learnt this semester with lots of revision activities. We are playing games and completing group and independent activities that revise many concepts we have studied, but also provide us with the opportunity to apply what we have learnt in new situations. This will give the children the ability to have really solid understanding before we move onto some new work next semester. Time flies when you re having fun! Museum Excursion We are looking forward to our excursion to the Queensland Museum next Thursday and are very lucky to be able to do the Animal and Insect classification activities with the museum scientists. We will be leaving at 8am and plan to be back by 4pm. We will endeavor to let everyone know if we are delayed by traffic or unforeseen circumstances. I will have my mobile ( ) with me, if you need to reach us during the day. The museum trip is a culminating activity for our Australian Animals unit and we will have the chance to see many models and displays of what we have learnt. Please remember that all teaching staff will be on the excursion and the school will be unattended on that day. Other arrangements will need to be made if your children are not attending the excursion.

4 HILLVIEW STATE SCHOOL 4 News from 3456 As the term comes to an end, we are reflecting on what we have learnt and bring to fruition all our tasks and projects. Our Australian Animal (Yr 5/6) and Life Cycle (Yr3/4) projects are complete and on display in our classroom. They are amazing and the students need to be commended on their effort to showcase their knowledge is such creative ways. The time and care they have taken is evident and I would also like to thank parents for their support to make them happen. Independent projects are an important preparation for high school assignments and they teach our kids to manage their time and take responsibility for their learning. We have also been working hard on our poetry writing and took part in an online workshop with Australian poet, Lorraine Marwood. This original poem by Marcus Webb is a great example of the talent they have shown. The Crab I am a crab, I like to run As you can see It is great fun I dig a hole and stay a night And bend my legs and curl up tight As morning comes And predators appear I wave my claws to show no fear I wear eight pairs of shoes and socks To dodge and skittle around the rocks I duck and jump over twigs and more As they wash up along the shore My friends arrive to play with me We play crab games by the sea By Marcus Webb

5 HILLVIEW STATE SCHOOL Our mathematics focus groups on Wednesday have been concentrating on numbers and operations. We like to work in different ways and with different materials. Using knowledge in a variety of situations helps to consolidate understanding and make it more interesting. This activity was a race game with four teams trying to order their operations in record time. Laughter, games and team work make learning fun! (And it works!)
