Bigelow Month of September Scientific Skills, Scientific Method and Measurement Course Name: Middle School Physical Science Quarter: 1 Content (Outcomes) Skills (Outcomes) Assessment Materials & Texts SWBAT utilize the scientific method to conduct their own (guided) scientific experiments. Teacher developed PowerPoints SWBAT define inference, qualitative and quantitative observation, and differentiate between the three. SWBAT differentiate between and identify independent (manipulated) and dependent (responding) variables in an experiment. SWBAT use metric forms of measurement to determine length, mass, volume (solid and liquid), temperature and density. SWBAT create simple graphs with clear, defined axis and titles. S1.1 SWBAT Formulate questions independently with the aid of references appropriate for guiding the search for explanations of everyday observations. S1.2c - SWBAT differentiate among observations, inferences, predictions, and explanations S2 SWBAT go beyond the use of reasoning and consensus, scientific inquiry involves the testing of proposed explanations involving the use of conventional techniques and procedures and usually requiring considerable ingenuity S2.1d SWBAT use appropriate tools and conventional techniques to solve problems about the natural world, including: Tests tests are written using Wizard Test Maker and Prentice Hall Science Explorer software. 2 SWBAT become familiar with specific lab tools, rules and safety precautions utilized in a formal laboratory setting. measuring observing describing classifying sequencing Teacher Observation Calculators Rulers S2.2 SWBAT design scientific investigations (e.g., observing, describing, and comparing; collecting samples; seeking more information, conducting a controlled experiment; discovering new objects or phenomena; making models), design a simple controlled experiment, identify independent variables (manipulated), dependent variables(responding), and constants in a simple controlled experiment SWBAT organize and neatly label their work. SWBAT utilize laboratory equipment properly and safely. SWBAT identify the safety precautions in the room and how to use them appropriately.
