3 OUR PROGRAMME Please note that: We deliver our Education Programme in a variety of ways including Tours, Talks, Story telling and Workshops to meet the learning needs of your students. We offer packages within several subjects and areas of the National Curriculum that apply to student ages from Pre-School through KS1 through to KS4 Our programme has been created by working in collaboration with experienced teachers. The packages in this programme have been created to fit into specific key stages and age ranges. However they have also been designed to offer flexibility. Please don t hesitate to contact our dedicated schools officer to discuss your specific education requirements. He can be contacted by mail: schoolsofficer@warwick-castle.com The Castle Dungeons is not part of our Education offering but is available to book from per student (including Castle entry). It is recommend for students over 10 only. A minimum of 2 teachers / leaders need to be present throughout the entire 45 minute experience. 3

4 SAMPLE ITINERARY 10.00am: Arrival You will be met by our schools officer who will review your itinerary with you, give you practical information for the day and guide you through the turnstiles 10:15am: Explore the Castle! See the fun of real history as you delve into our halls and across the ramparts, discovering over 1000 years of history 11am: Educational Tour Choose from over 10 Educational Packages! Please make sure you arrive 5 minutes before your education package starts. 12pm: Lunch Time slots cannot be pre-booked. However we endeavour to fulfil your needs where possible 1pm: Daily Shows Watch one of our Daily Shows Such as the Bowman, Trebuchet, Birds of Prey and explore the vast parts of Warwick Castle (Shows and times are seasonal, so make sure to check with our Education team so you aren t disappointed!) 3pm: Departure 4

6 MEET THE MONARCHY History This tour introduces children to the concept of monarchy and discusses key attributes of a successful or unsuccessful Monarch. Such as respect, ability to lead, the results of not producing an heir. The tour teaches the popular stories associated with these Monarchs. Monarchs covered in this tour include Henry VIII, William the Conqueror, and Queen Victoria, Please contact our schools officer if you would like other Monarchs. 7 MEET THE MONARCHY Curriculum Links: Pupils should be taught about events beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally (KS1) -The Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest, The six wives of Henry 8, the Civil wars. Pupils should be taught about the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements.(ks1) -William 1 st, Henry 8, Charles 1st, Queen Victoria Pupils should be taught about significant historical events, people and places in their own locality. -William 1st and Norman Conquest Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: Gain a fundamental understanding of a chronological framework from when significant individuals ruled, from William 1st to Queen Victoria. Be introduced to famous Kings & Queens which will allow pupils to interpret what they looked like, and the famous characteristics they possessed. Understand the basic events and combatants at the Battle of Hastings. 7

8 ATTACK & DEFENCE History Students are introduced to the structures and strategies involved in the defence of Warwick castle through the middle ages. From the construction of the Motte and Bailey through to the 14 th Century defences we have today. They will learn the vocabulary of the various defences as well as learning how such defences were used. Pupils will have the opportunity to plan an attack and prepare a defence Of Warwick Castle. 9 ATTACK & DEFENCE National Curriculum Links: A study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils chronological knowledge beyond (KS2) A local history study (KS2-3) The development of Church, state and society in Medieval Britain (KS3) Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: Understand how Castles have developed and changed over time and what caused the construction of Castles to cease. Have an increased knowledge of the Vocabulary of Castle defences Have a clear understanding and chronological knowledge of significant wars and of the people that battled in them. Understand how Warwick Castle has protected itself during significant wars. This tour is a specific general defence of Warwick castle. 9

10 CASTLE LIFE History & Design Technology Castle Life will explore the social and cultural life in a medieval castle by looking at the roles and tasks carried out by the Castles inhabitants throughout its history. The tour shows comparisons and similarities to modern roles. Such as medicine, cooking, construction and fabrication. 11 CASTLE LIFE Curriculum links: Pupils should be taught about: the development of state and society in Medieval Britain e.g. the development of castles a study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils chronological knowledge beyond 1066 e.g. changes in aspects of social history Intended learning outcomes: After the Tour, your pupils will: Have a basic idea of the roles carried out in a Mediaeval castle and how its inhabitants entertained themselves. Have been introduced to the vocabulary of medieval jobs and leisure activities. Have a basic understanding and Vocabulary about the hierarchy such as the Earl, and the Constable within a medieval Castle 11

12 THE KINGMAKER History This tour is designed to give a solid overview of the Wars of the roses with particular reference to the role played by Warwick the Kingmaker. Pupils will be taught some of the key moments such as the Battles of Towton and Barnet, the death of Richard III and the rise of Henry Tudor. They will also be introduced to some of the important Characters, such as Henry VI, Edward IV and Richard Neville. Key Stage / Age Group: 3 4 (11-16 years) Duration: 30 minutes Cost: 2.50 per student Subject: History 12

13 THE KINGMAKER National Curriculum Links: the development of Church, state and society in Medieval Britain : the Wars of the Roses A local history study Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: Learn about the life and culture back in 1471 during the court of Warwick the Kingmaker. Have a strong understanding of the characteristics of the Kingmaker, and how he influenced and supported the monarch. Learn about significant wars and battles that occurred during this time, including how Warwick Castle was involved during these events. Have been introduced to some of the key events and characters of the period. 13

14 POWER OF THE MONARCHY History The power Of The Monarchy Uses key Monarchs in English history to show the roles of the English Monarchy and how it has developed and changed over time. Older children will learn about moments when the power of the Monarch changed at times such as the reformation and Magna Carter. 15 POWER OF THE MONARCHY National Curriculum Links: a study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils chronological knowledge beyond 1066.(KS2) a study over time tracing how several aspects of national history are reflected in the locality. (KS2) a study of an aspect of history or a site dating from a period beyond 1066 that is significant in the locality. (KS2) the English Reformation and Counter-Reformation (Henry VIII to Mary I) (KS3) Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: Be able to discuss the differences in the level of power between various monarchs using case studies, from William the Conqueror to Queen Victoria I. Have a clear understanding of how Warwick Castle has changed and developed throughout the reign of significant monarchs. Learn how and why particular monarchs rose and fell during their reign of England and their lasting influence. Have an understanding of the reformation. 15

16 CRIME & PUNISHMENT History & Citizenship Pupils are introduced to an understanding of crime and punishment as understood by the Anglo Saxons, mediaeval society and the Victorians. They will be able to enact case studies from sourced Saxon and Victorian material. 17 CRIME & PUNISHMENT National Curriculum Links: History: Pupils should be taught about changes in an aspect of social history, such as crime & punishment from Anglo-Saxons to the present (KS2) Citizenship: Pupils should be taught about the nature of rules and laws and the justice system, how rules and laws are made and enforced, and why different rules are needed in different situations (KS2) Citizenship: Pupils should be taught about the precious liberties enjoyed by the citizens of the United Kingdom. (KS2) History: Pupils should be taught about the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements. Some should be used to compare different periods. Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: Recognise why we have laws, rules and a justice system in place, and how it has changed over significant times in history. Gain a good understanding to how criminals were tried, and how the guilty would have met a grisly end compared to the modern day penalties. Have extended knowledge of significant individuals and criminals that have stayed at Warwick Castle during different periods of time, reigns of monarchs and laws of Parliaments. 17

18 ULTIMATE CASTLE TOUR History This tour traces the castles history from its initial construction in 1068 by William the Conqueror. It follows the development of the castle into a powerful mediaeval fortress, how it became a stately home and finally a tourist attraction. The tour references how different periods of history have influenced such development: The Norman conquest, Hundred years war, wars of the roses the enlightenment, fin du siècle. Key Stage / Age Group: 3-4 (12-16 years) Duration: 30 minutes Cost: 2.50 per student Subject: History 18

19 ULTIMATE CASTLE TOUR National Curriculum Links: a study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils chronological knowledge beyond (KS2) a study over time tracing how several aspects of national history are reflected in the locality. (KS2) a study of an aspect of history or a site dating from a period beyond 1066 that is significant in the locality. (KS2) Pupils should be taught to develop a sense of period through describing and analysing the relationships between the characteristic features of periods and societies. (KS4) Pupils should be analysing and explaining the reasons for, and results of, historical events, situations and changes. (KS4) Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: This tour will explore the castle s history by presenting key facts and figures in a chronological manner. It aims to provide a general understanding of the changes to the castle over time and introduces some of the castle s most important owners. 19

20 NORMAN CONQUEST History This tour will inform pupils about the Battle of Hastings, have a focus on the Norman Conquest and specifically William the Conqueror s role in it and describe the establishment of castles in England. It will not only give the children an appreciation for our medieval history and the importance of building fortresses, but also actively engage them with questions and props! For KS1-4. Key Stage / Age Group: 1-4 (6-16 years) Duration: 30 minutes Cost: 2.50 per student Subject: History 20

21 NORMAN CONQUEST Curriculum Links: Pupils should be taught about events beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally (KS1) -Detail of the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest. Pupils should be taught about the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements. (KS1) -William 1 st otherwise knows as William the Conqueror Pupils should be taught about significant historical events, people and places in their own locality. -The Norman Conquest and establishment of castles Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: Understand how Castles have developed and why they were so effective at repelling armies Be introduced to the concept of the monarchy though William 1 st Coronation Understand the basic events and combatants at the Battle of Hastings as well as what caused and started the Norman Conquest. 21

22 ULTIMATE KIDS TOUR History This tour is designed to introduce four historical facts about Warwick castle to very young children; Attacking the Barbican and gatehouse, Our secret door, Swords and shields, The fossils in our floor. It is fun and highly interactive including allowing the children to safely handle some weapons and is ideal for those schools looking for general castle based activity for reception classes and years 1 and 2. Key Stage / Age Group: PRE - 2 (4-7 years) Duration: 30 minutes Cost: 2.50 per student Subject: History 22

24 TREBUCHET TALK History & Design Technology (Available from Feb Half term October only) Using Warwick castles own siege engine as an aid and backdrop. Alongside a talk on the history of this impressive machine, the pupils will learn about the physical forces and principles that needed to be understood by medieval engineers in order to construct and work this impressive machine. The Trebuchet fires twice a day so pupils will also get the chance to see and experience the power of such engineering. Key Stage / Age Group: 1-3 (6-12 years) Duration: 20 minutes Cost: 2 per student Subject: History & Design Technology 24

25 TREBUCHET TALK National Curriculum Links: Pupil should be able to develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific discipline of physics. Intended learning outcomes: After the workshop, pupils will: Use our medieval weapons of war as a case study to learn how some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears allow smaller force to have a greater effect. Identify the forces such as gravity and air resistance that comes into play when using various mechanisms. Learn why and how the Trebuchet s design was successful in war due to its clever design that utilizes certain forces of physics. 25

27 STORIES & SHIELDS Arts & Crafts (English Language) Our most popular offering for reception and KS1. Students meet a real princess (or Prince), who will introduce them to the idea of heraldry. They are then given the opportunity to design there own heraldic symbols which they can then paint onto their wooden shield which is supplied as part of this package. They are also treated to a story from the princess involving bravery, a quest and of course a dragon. Key Stage / Age Group: Pre-School - 1 (3-7 years) Duration: 45 minutes Cost: 5 per pupil Subject: Arts & Crafts (English Language) 27

28 STORIES & SHIELDS National Curriculum Links: Pupils should be able to record from first-hand observation, experience and imagination, and explore ideas. Pupils should be able to represent observations, ideas and feelings, and design and make images and artefacts. Pupils should use materials and processes used in making art, craft and design. Cross referencing to English (KS1): Speaking and listening: Listening To listen, understand and respond to others, pupils should be taught to: make relevant comments listen to others' reactions Speaking and listening: Group discussion and interaction To join in as members of a group, pupils should be taught to: Extend their ideas in the light of discussion Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: Use materials provided by the Castle to create their own family crest and then get to take away with them back to the classroom Extend their imagination and explore creative ideas during arts & crafts activities. 28

29 SWORDS & SHIELDS Art & Design & History The students are introduced to a selection of key weapons of the mediaeval battle field, how these weapons were used and who would carry them. will take part in drill and marching exercises as performed during the middle ages. The workshop will also give the students the opportunity to learn some basic sword fighting skills. The tour ends with an opportunity to design a uniform based on their favorited warrior. 30 SWORDS & SHIELDS National Curriculum Links: Pupils should use materials and processes used in making art, craft and design (KS2) Play competitive games, modified where appropriate, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending (KS2) Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance (KS2) Cross reference to History & Art & Design: Battle formations used in War. Referencing famous battle and wars. Optional shield creating activity to take away with them for the classroom (aimed at KS2) Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: Learn the art of sword fighting and different techniques that were used in history from Warwick Castle Swordsman. Will recognise different arts on medieval weapons in History! Use materials provided by the Castle to create their own family crest and then get to take away with them back to the classroom 30

31 BATTLE SKILLS History, Design & Technology & P.E Another favourite with schools. Students meet with a mediaeval recruitment officer who will take them through their paces in mediaeval drill. They will discuss and see various mediaeval weapons and their use and will learn a number of techniques with swords. At the end students will learn that warfare is not all about glory. 32 BATTLE SKILLS National Curriculum Links: use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games (KS2-3) develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports (KS3) Cross reference to History & Art & Design: Battle formations used in War. Intended learning outcomes: After the tour, pupils will: An extended and more physical version of Swords & Shields where student will learn the art of sword fighting and bill drilling whilst utilising different techniques that were used in history from Warwick Castle Swordsman.
