1 B M G M T B U S I N E S S M A T H P A R T I MOST COMPA TAB LE WITH WY NN READ ER R EV IS ED JA NUARY 2016 COURSE DESCRIPTION & STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES BMGMT 138 Business Math Part I course description follows; Formulating and solving practical business math problems, in an applied context including: using one-variable linear equations, percent s, fractions, decimals, markups, markdowns, perishables, and trade & cash discounting. Upon Successful completion of this course the student will be able: Solve equations and word problems for the unknown. Use percent s, decimals, fractions, and their conversions and applications. Apply trade discounts single and chain, cash discounts, credit terms, and partial payments. Determine mark-ups based on cost/selling price, markups, markdowns and perishables. PREREQUISITE INFORMATION The prerequisite for BMGMT 138 Business Math Part One is Math 90A with a grade of 2.0 or qualifying placement score. Business Math Part One is a 3 credit course, and is the prerequisite for the two credit course BMGMT 139 Business Math Part Two. Students must earn a 2.0 in Business Math Part One or obtain written permission from the instructor before enrolling in Part Two. Students completing Business Math Part One on an Accelerated Schedule may be able to complete this course and Business Math Part Two within the same quarter. Successful completion of both Part One and Part Two is equivalent to BMGMT 140 Business Math, a five credit course. The Course Syllabus and the Accelerated Schedule can be found when clicking Resources above the ALEKS Menu. COURSE MATERIALS & CLASS WEBSITE No textbook is required; however any older edition of Business Math by Jeffrey Slater can be used for offline study. There are no significant differences between textbook editions. No calculators should be used during ALEKS sessions. When needed a calculator within ALEKS will appear on the screen for student use. The class website is located at The course code will be provided by the instructor. Check to see if your instructor has used a CANVAS information page to provide students with this code. For help with registration or technical assistance call (714) or (800) Students must register separately and sign in to the online ALEKS classroom with an Access Code. The Access Code can be purchased from the publisher s website or from the OC Bookstore, and is good for one hundred and eighty

2 days. Students, who wish to take Business Math139 Part Two during the same or following quarter, should still be able to use the same Access Code. Skipping a quarter in between Part One and Part Two will most likely require that a new card be purchased. Students without a purchased Access Code may use a free two week access period financial aid code. The Financial Aid Access Code does not add an additional two weeks to your account. NOTE: This code gives you temporary access to ALEKS for a two-week period. Once the code expires, you will be locked out of your ALEKS account until you purchase a regular Student Access Code. It is highly recommended that you purchase the Student Access Code BEFORE the two weeks expire to prevent interruptions with your ALEKS account. 1. To log into ALEKS using the Financial Aid Access Code, go to: 2. Click on the "SIGN UP NOW!" link located under the login box on the left of the page. 3. Enter your Course Code in the box labeled "Using ALEKS with a Class?" and click on "Continue." 4. Verify that you are registering for the correct course and click on "Continue." Enter the 20-character Financial Aid Access Code. 5. Continue with the registration process until your account has been set up successfully. 6. After your account set up you will be logged into ALEKS and can immediately begin working in the course. 7. You can extend your ALEKS account at any time by clicking on "extend your account" and entering a purchased Student Access Code. If your temporary access expires before you purchase a Student Access Code, simply log in to ALEKS and you will be directed on how to extend your current account. You will then be able to continue your course where you left off before the temporary access expired. You do NOT need to create a new ALEKS account to continue your course. GRADING SCALE & COMPONENTS Course grades will be assigned numerical grades using the following scale: 90% & above = % = % = % = % = % = % = % = % = % = % = % = % =.7 below 60%=0.0 IN CLASS ONLINE TESTS - There are seven in-class tests. s must be completed during class or in the Bremerton ing Center by their individual due date. A test may be taken early with at least one week prior approval from the instructor. Other limitations may apply. See Course Schedule for due dates. IN CLASS FINAL EXAM The Comprehensive Final Exam can only be taken in-class or at the Bremerton ing Center. The date and time scheduled during Final s Week is identified on the Course Schedule at the end of this Syllabus. The instructor should be notified at least one week in advance for an early Final Exam request. ALEKS OBJECTIVES ALEKS keeps track of student objective attainment, and displays results in various colors in the form of a pie chart. Grey indicates topics the student is learning. Selecting any pie slice allows a student to see greater details of their individual learning progress. It is imperative that a student not fall behind, as ALEKS will move the student into the next set of objectives once a due date has passed. This results in a lower score based on the incomplete objectives. ALEKS may add back a prerequisite objective, only if it relates to future learning units, and only if the student finishes the future unit early and time allows. See the ALEKS Calendar for objective due dates.

3 ONLINE HOURS IN ALEKS This portion of the grade is based on a minimum of 5 hours a week in ALEKS. The instructor recommends 8 10 hours per week. A week begins on Tuesday and ends at 11:59 PM on Monday. Students completing 100 % of the unit s objectives within the week, before 5 hours have been completed, will receive full credit for the 5 hours that week. In determining the grades for ALEKS participation and topic mastery, the records kept by the ALEKS system will be used. There are no exceptions to this. To review ALEKS records, click Results above the ALEKS menu and review all three tabs. Students should be aware that periods of inactivity in ALEKS are not counted towards time spent and that the ALEKS system will log students off for inactivity. ONLINE ALEKS HOMEWORK The online homework in ALEKS is due every Monday by 11:59 PM; additionally hand written work and solutions to support the completion of online homework, should be recorded in the student s notebook. See In Class Notebook Check information listed next. IN CLASS NOTEBOOK CHECK Students are required to keep a notebook of ALL work related to homework and any other problems they do in ALEKS. Notebooks must be neat and organized. Each page should clearly indicate the Topic Title, Date Completed, and organization and demonstration of appropriate solution steps. No exceptions. The written work is graded on Dates. When turned in, loose leaf papers should be stapled representing only the problems relative to the topics and time period between in-class testing dates. Notebooks are graded on a pass/fail basis and are due at the beginning of class on In-Class dates. Your instructor will not try to guess what you are turning in. Spiral notebooks should not be used. IN CLASS ATTENDANCE In order for students to earn class attendance points, they must remain in class for the entire class time. The instructor will identify a pack-up time. Partial credit will be assigned for an hour of attendance. A zero will be assigned for anything less. Each student is allowed one exception. Attendance grades are posted each week. ONLINE CHAPTER PRACTICE TESTS Taking chapter practice tests is highly recommended. Students may take practice tests multiple times, and are not restricted to where they can take them. Only the best score for each practice test will be recorded. PRACTICE FINAL PROBLEMS (PFP) - Students who complete the Practice Final Problems score significantly higher on the Comprehensive Final Exam. The Practice Final is taken only once. 4 Worksheets: Optional problems that create a custom worksheet with 16 review questions when clicking on Worksheet above the ALEKS Menu. This handy set of review sheets to complete offline provides problems to practice based on what you are learning in your pie. CLASS POLICIES: LATE WORK & EXTENSION COUPONS Each student begins the class with 3 extension coupons. Coupons can be redeemed to extend a Homework due date by 24 hours, excuse a missed class attendance, or extend a Notebook Check to the next class period. Coupons can also be used to take a one class day late, or within THE SAME TIME FRAME AT THE Bremerton ing Center. This option requires prior approval from the instructor. Coupons cannot be used for HOURS IN ALEKS, or other grading components. CELL PHONES: No cell phone usage is permitted. This also includes calculator features. Cell phones should be turned off before entering the classroom. CALCULATOR USE: Calculator usage is limited in this course. ALEKS will determine when a calculator should be used and presents an on-screen calculator to students to assist in solving the problem. ALEKS will require students to solve other problems without the use of a calculator. Calculator use is permitted on the Offline Metric System Assessments. TRACKING THE USE OF ALEKS AND TOPIC MASTERY: In determining the grades for ALEKS participation and topic mastery, the records kept by the ALEKS system will be used. There are no exceptions to this. ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY: Students are required to do their own work on all assignments. It is also the student s responsibility to keep their work out of the hands of others who may misrepresent their origins. This includes access to the student s account or ALEKS Access Code. During any ALEKS Assessments (Knowledge Checks, Final Exam, and PFP), students may not use any other resources: no notes, no text, no other websites, no consultations with any other person by any means, and no calculator except for when the ALEKS on-screen calculator is available. Tutors or other lab staff members are not allowed to help with assessments of any sort. Asking for help on ALEKS problems is permitted only when in Learning Mode or while reviewing. Technology Plan B: Develop a plan "B" in case you lose your access to the Internet. The plan "B" should consider issues like a loss of your normal Internet access, problems with your device (laptop, mobile device, etc.), and any outdated software that might affect your ability to participate in this class. Ask yourself what would you do if you lost access to the Internet for more than a few hours and how you would continue to participate in this class? Do you have family or friends with access? Can you drive to campus and work at one of the tech labs? Do you have access to a public library? If a campus-wide problem occurs (such as a network outage) that impacts the ability of all students to complete activities as scheduled, your instructor will make appropriate accommodations. If you are having individual technical or computer difficulties, it is your responsibility to use the computers on campus or through another source to meet due dates. Class Time: During each class period the instructor will lecture on topics from ALEKS that correspond to the calendar. Afterwards, students may work ahead in ALEKS. An Instructional Aid will be available to help students

5 working on ALEKS with technology issues for the first class period only. Take notes if they assisted you in resolving an issue, as these aids will not be available in future class meetings. The instructor may not have the technical expertise to assist with technical issues. In order to get the most out of class please pay close attention to what topics will be covered in class and what topics you have mastered in ALEKS ACCOMMODATIONS AND STUDENT SERVICES The following link to Access Services provides a Menu and link to a full range of Olympic College student services, from note taking and tutoring, to assistive technologies. The OC Website Search box can also be used for counseling and open lab hours. Disability Accommodations: If you believe you need an accommodation because of a disability, contact the Office of Access Services on the Bremerton campus at or go to AccessServices@olympic.edu. If you have a documented disability, please be proactive and contact Access Services early in the term to formally request an accommodation ( ). Each test needs to be scheduled in advance with the ing Center. Allow 4-days for your instructor to route your test once you have provided her with your Faculty ing Support Form including the testing appointment date. Math Tutoring: Free math help is available at the Bremerton Campus Math Study Center. Tutors may not be familiar with the financial vocabulary of Business Math, however all are familiar with basic math skills and many are familiar with ALEKS. The OC website search box at is a great resource for all types of student services. Check quarterly for Math Lab Tutors and Math Help for all campuses. BMGMT 138 BUSINESS MATH SUGGESTED COURSE SCHEDULE The table below represents a Suggested Schedule for the minimum pacing of this course. An ACCELERATED SCHEDULE may be requested from the instructor for students wishing to complete both BMGMT 138 Bus Math Part One, and BMGMT 139 Bus Math Part Two, within the same quarter.
