ALEKS can be accessed using tablets and smartphones, but desktop or laptop computers are recommended. If you have trouble logging onto ALEKS, try using a different browser or restarting your computer. 2 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Prerequisite: MATH 020 F with a grade of C or better or math skills clearance. 72 hours lecture per term. This intermediate algebra course is appropriate for students preparing to take MATH 129 F, MATH 141 F, MATH 141HF, or MATH 142 F. This course includes products and factoring, exponents and radicals, fractions, functions and graphs, linear and quadratic equations, linear inequalities, logarithms and related topics at an intermediate level. Calculators will be used for selected topics. This course also meets the prerequisite for MATH 100 F, MATH 120 F, MATH 120HF and SOSC 120 F. Students who receive credit for MATH 040 F may not receive credit for MATH 041 F. (Degree Credit) AA GE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. Identify an equation as linear, quadratic, radical, rational, exponential, or logarithmic, and solve the equation using an appropriate method. 2. Produce the completely factored form of a polynomial. 3. Perform operations on and simplify polynomials, rational expressions, radical expressions, logarithmic expressions, or exponential expressions at an intermediate level. 4. Evaluate a function with a numerical or variable argument, and produce the graph of the function by plotting points. Note: In a college course, it is expected that you will spend 3 hours per week for every 1 unit earned. This is a 4-unit class, so 12 hours per week are required. Since we meet on campus only 2 hours per week, this means you will need to spend at least 10 hours per week outside of class working in ALEKS, watching the videos and explanations online, completing worksheets, studying, etc. Schedule 10 hours for math into your weekly schedule. If possible, I encourage you to make one of those hours the weekly SI session (see #6 below). COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 1. Midterms (3 x 200 points) and Final Exam (400 points) 62% of grade For each of the three midterms, you may use one half sheet of an 8½ x11 paper with notes on ONE side only. Your notes must be handwritten or typed by you. For the final, you may use one whole sheet of notes, ONE side. 2. In-Class Participation and Activities 3% of grade In-class activities will be part of our weekly schedule. To earn the points for an activity (usually 5 points), you must be in class and participating in the entire activity from start to finish. If you arrive late or leave early, you will not earn the points for that activity. Canvas Modules Each weekly module will include learning pages and assignment pages. The assignments will include both online ALEKS work and written (paper and pencil) work: 3. Worksheet Packets 11% of grade Worksheet packets will be handed out in class, and are posted on Canvas (FC website Canvas link on left side) on the Files tab in case you don t get a packet in class. Regular packets are 10 pts each; midterm review packets are 15 pts each; final exam review packet is worth 20 pts. Follow the instructions in the Canvas module and on the packet pages to complete the packet as you work through the weekly module. Once completed, you ll reach a packet submission page in the module. You ll need to scan your completed packet (may use a free cell phone scanner app such as CamScanner), and upload the scan in Canvas by the due date and time. Zarske Math 40 Hybrid 9:30am Fall

3 4. ALEKS Objectives (20 points per week) 19% of grade See schedule on page 8-12 of syllabus. There are usually two objective goals per week part (a) due on urday night at 11:59 PM (5 points) and part (b) due on day night at 11:59 PM (15 points). The ALEKS system will not allow you to work on an objective after the due date. Any topics you do not master within one objective will pour over into future objectives. That means if you do not finish an objective on time, you will lose points and also make your future objectives longer, so be sure to keep up with the schedule. Your score is based on the percentage of the objective that you complete on time. For example, if you complete 80% of Objective #1a by the due date of urday 8/25, you earn 80% of 5 points = 4 points. If you finish an objective early, you may click Continue My Path in ALEKS and start the next objective if you would like. 5. ALEKS Pie Progress 5% of grade Points are awarded at four times during the semester for making progress in your ALEKS pie: By 9/22 - target is 75 topics (15 pts) By 10/27 target is 145 topics (20 pts) By 11/24 target is 165 topics (20 pts) By 12/4 target is 200 topics (30 pts) Total number of topics in pie is approx. 240 You earn full credit if you meet or exceed the target percent. If not, the points you earn are based on your percentage of the target percent. For example, if by Sept. 22 you have only completed 60 topics in your pie, you have achieved 60/75 = 80% of the target goal. You will earn 80% of 15 pts = 12 points toward your grade. 6. SI sessions (Supplemental Instruction) Optional but highly recommended for XC This course has been designated as part of Fullerton College s Supplemental Instruction Program a voluntary student success program. Attendance is not mandatory, but I highly recommend it. Students that participated last semester found it very helpful and fun. You may earn 4 XC points for each SI session you attend from start to finish (maximum 36 XC points). Supplemental Instruction provides an academic boost through regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer facilitated sessions. The SI sessions are 50 minutes long and focus on improving your performance in class. It is not intended only for struggling students. In fact, students who consistently attend SI are generally more successful and earn higher grades than those who don t. The meeting time for SI sessions will be announced by the first week of classes. Our student SI leader is Charmaine Concepcion. She is one of my excellent former Math 40 students, and she will be working with us in our class and in the SI sessions. 7. Extra Credit Available Extra Credit Worksheets at the end of each packet (3 pts each) SI Session attendance and/or Math Lab time (36 pts maximum combined) o SI Sessions: 4 XC pts per 50-minute session must attend entire session o Math Lab time: 2 XC pts per each hour (60 minutes) of time shown on scanner report o For Math Lab, only time on the scanner report will be counted. Restrictions: If you forget to scan in and out so your time is not on the report, your time will not be counted even if you were there. The system subtracts any scheduled class time that overlaps your Math Lab time. If you go over 2 hours in a session, your time zeroes out. Scan out, then back in before 2 hours elapses in a session or you will not receive credit for your time. Zarske Math 40 Hybrid 9:30am Fall

4 ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION POLICY Participation in both the in-class and online portions of the class is required. You may be dropped for lack of participation in either portion. You should only miss class for serious and compelling reasons, e.g. illness, death in the family, emergency, etc. You may be dropped from the class for any of the following: **Not registering in the ALEKS course through Canvas by Thurs. Aug. 23 **Expired ALEKS temporary access **Missing three or more weeks of ALEKS objectives **Missing three or more weeks of packets **Three or more absences Student Withdrawal: Fullerton College considers it to be the responsibility of the student to drop a class through Admissions and Records if they wish to withdraw. If you wish to withdraw from this class by your choice, it is your responsibility to do so through Webstar. Withdrawal deadlines: *Without a W and qualify for refund. Sep. 3 *With a W Sun. Nov. 11 MAKE-UP POLICY: Midterms: Each student may make up or retake Midterm #1, 2 or 3 (choose one) at one of the makeup sessions in December (see p. 12 of syllabus): If for any reason you miss Midterm #1, 2 or 3, you must take it as your one makeup or your score will be zero. If you take all midterms as scheduled, you may retake one midterm of your choice (optional). I will count the higher of the two scores (original score and makeup score). If you know in advance that you will be absent on the day of a midterm, you may arrange to take the exam before the scheduled date and time if you contact me at least a week in advance of the test date. Or you may wait for a December makeup session. Final Exam: No makeups. ALEKS Objectives: The ALEKS system will not allow access to objectives past the due date. Any topics you do not master within one objective will pour over into future ones, but you cannot make up the missed points. Worksheet Packets: Packet scans uploaded to Canvas past the due date and time will receive late credit: Up to one week late - 20% off (any time after the due date and time is late) Additional 20% off for each additional week late In-Class Activities: Missed in-class activities (two maximum) can be made up in the Math Lab: Where to go: Math Lab (Room 807) within four weeks of the missed class Class activity makeup: Ask staff for the makeup activity worksheet, complete it, and then ask the staff for the self-check key. 5 HOW TO CHECK YOUR CURRENT GRADE Scores for all assignments will be posted in the ALEKS gradebook. Your Overall ALEKS Grade is your current grade in the class. Log in to ALEKS through Canvas, then: GRADING SCALE Based on weighted average of categories A: % B: % C: % D: % F: % ALEKS KNOWLEDGE CHECKS ALEKS is based on the principle of mastery learning. To determine which topics you have mastered and which topics you still need to practice, a knowledge check will pop up periodically. Knowledge checks also give you the opportunity to check off topics in future objectives by showing what you have already learned. If you miss questions you had previously mastered, you don t lose points on previous scores. But ALEKS puts those topics back into your pathway for you to practice. Once the knowledge check appears, within the first 24 hours you have a choice: After 24 hours, ALEKS will make you take the knowledge check before you can do anything else. 7 FULLERTON COLLEGE MATHEMATICS DIVISION SELECTED COLLEGE POLICIES ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY Students are expected to abide by ethical standards in preparing and presenting material which demonstrates their level of knowledge and which is used to determine grades. Such standards are founded on basic concepts of integrity and honesty. These include, but are not limited to, the following areas: 1. Students shall not plagiarize 2. Students shall not cheat 3. Students shall not furnish materials or information in order to enable another student to plagiarize or cheat. Instructors may deal with academic dishonesty in one or more of the following ways: 1. Assign an appropriate academic penalty such as an oral reprimand or point reduction. 2. Assign an F on all or part of a particular paper, project, or exam. 3. Report to the appropriate administrators, with notification of same to the student(s), for disciplinary action by the College. Such a report will be accompanied by supporting evidence and documentation. Repeated violations may result in students receiving an F in the course, suspension or dismissal from the College. AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) STATEMENT Fullerton College is committed to providing educational accommodations for students with disabilities upon the timely request by the student to the instructor. Verification of the disability must also be provided. The Disability Support Services office functions as a resource for students and faculty in the determination and provision of educational accommodations. CHILDREN ON CAMPUS Children are not allowed on campus unless supervised by a parent or guardian. Children may not attend classes or computer labs (unless the course is specifically designed to include children.) Children must be supervised so educational activities are not interrupted and may not be left unattended in common areas such as the library, student center, food services area, quad or college parking lots. EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATEMENT Take note of the safety features in and around the classroom. Also, please study the posted evacuation routes. The most direct route of exit may not be the safest. Running out of the building during earthquakes may be dangerous. During strong earthquakes, it is recommended to duck, cover, and hold until the quaking stops. Follow the guidance of your instructor. Your cooperation during emergencies can minimize the possibility of injury to yourself and others. You may purchase copies of these publications at the campus bookstore, or you may read them online at the Fullerton College website, STANDARDS OF STUDENT CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE POLICY The standards of student conduct and disciplinary action for violation of Board Policy 5500 were approved by the NOCCCD Board on January 28, 2003, and were drawn in compliance with Sections 66300, 76030, 76033, 76034, of the State Education Code. Students are expected to respect and obey civil and criminal law and shall be subject to the legal penalties for violation of the city, county, state, and national law(s). Student conduct must conform to Board Policy and college regulations and procedures. As cited in BP5500, A student who violates the standards of student conduct shall be subject to disciplinary action including, but not limited to, the removal, suspension or expulsion of the student. Students have an obligation to familiarize themselves with the College s policies, rules and regulations and to conduct themselves in a reasonable, respectful manner, which is conducive toward attaining their educational goal. Upon registration, each student should obtain a copy of the College Policies and Regulations: Standards of Student Conduct and Discipline Policy. Contained therein are the policies approved by the Board of Trustees governing student behavior and the applicable penalties for violations of these policies. Copies are available in the Student Affairs Office, the Office of Equity and Diversity, all division offices, and the Student Services office. WAIT TIME FOR LATE INSTRUCTORS If, due to unforeseen emergencies, the instructor does not arrive at the scheduled start time for class, students are to wait for fifteen minutes (unless otherwise notified by the division). If they do not receive notification to wait for their instructor to arrive, after 15 minutes the students may leave with no penalty for absence or assigned work due for that class meeting. 8 How to Register in ALEKS- Math 40 day Fall 2018 Step 1: Go to and click Canvas on the left side. Step 2: Log in using your MyGateway Username and Password. Step 3: Click Courses, and click our Math 40 course. Step 5: Select whether you have used ALEKS before and click Continue. Step 4: Click Modules on the left side, and click ALEKS Registration. Step 6: Enter an access code or purchase one online. You may enter this temporary access code to delay payment for up to two weeks: 479E9-23C4E-9BFC ( 0 is numeral zero) After your temporary access expires and you purchase an access code online, select: *18 Weeks *ALEKS 360 with ebook Step 7: Once you complete the registration steps, you will be in our ALEKS course. You will go through a Tools Tutorial, (takes about 10 minutes), and will then be prompted to begin your initial knowledge check (takes about minutes). Step 9: If you registered with the temporary access code, you will need to submit payment within two weeks. **Log in to ALEKS (may need to log in directly at for this payment step only; otherwise always log in through FC Canvas) **On the next screen next to the name of our course: Step 8 - Initial Knowledge Check: IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO DO YOUR BEST (without help) as this will determine which topics will be in your personalized ALEKS course. Do the initial knowledge check in one sitting where you can concentrate and do your best. You will need scratch paper. Takes about minutes. This will take you back to the payment page (Step 6).
