1 AP Biology Syllabus Ms. Alexandra Salinas LASA High School EXPECTATIONS: 1. Be in your assigned seat, ready to complete the bell-ringer when the bell rings. 2. Bring all appropriate materials to class. 3. Put away all non-class related materials before the bell rings. 4. Refrain from disruptive behavior during class. 5. Show respect for your classmates, teacher, classroom, and yourself. STUDENTS ARE ALSO EXPECTED TO FOLLOW ALL DISTRICT AND SCHOOL POLICIES AT ALL TIMES! CONSEQUENCES: 1. Verbal warning. 2. Teacher-student conference. 3. Call to parent, possibly a parent conference. 4. Referral. GRADING POLICY: Classwork/Homework 50% Includes all assignments other than tests and quizzes. Assignments may be weighted differently related to the amount of work required for the assignment or based on other distinguishing factors. Quizzes/Tests 50% There will be between 3-4 quizzes per six weeks and 1 test each six weeks. The average score of the 3-4 quizzes will be equal in weight to each portion of the single test. For example, if there are three quizzes, each quiz will represent 11% of your grade for the category with the test representing the remaining 67%. SUPPLY LIST: If you have a problem obtaining any of these materials, please let me know immediately. 1. a 2 (other widths are acceptable but a 1 binder will probably not be sufficient) 3-ring hard backed binder ring subject dividers labeled as indicated below (these categories are suggestions and are not required): Bell-Ringers and Vocabulary Study Guides and Notes Reading Notes and Reading Assignments Labs Returned Work 3. loose leaf paper, not spiral notebook paper (no assignment turned in on paper with an attached spiral edge will be accepted) 4. a pen and pencil and two red grading pens in every class 5. a box of tissue OR a roll of paper towels (optional but greatly appreciated!) 2 OFFICE HOURS: Tuesday 2nd half of lunch 1:30 p.m. to 1:55 p.m. Wednesday mornings 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. Other times available by appointment TARDY AND ABSENCE POLICY: Enter the room quietly without disrupting the class. Sit in your assigned seat and begin the bell-ringer. If you have an excused absence or tardy (with a note), you may make up the missed bell-ringer during your teacher s office hours or choose to accept an average score of your other bell-ringers for the current bell-ringer sheet in lieu of making up the assignment. If you do not make up the bell-ringer within five school days, we will automatically average your other bell-ringer scores to determine the score for the missed bell-ringer. If you do not have an excused absence or tardy, you will receive whatever grade you actually earned on the bell-ringer; this means if you missed the entire bell-ringer you will receive a zero. Assignments and tests can be made up without penalty after an absence. One school day will be given for every day missed plus one extra day to complete the assignments missed after an absence. If assignments are not turned in within the allotted time, the work will be considered late and the late policy will be applied. If you have an unexcused tardy, you will NOT be allowed to make up the bell-ringer and you will earn a zero. Teachers cannot designate a tardy in district documents as excused or unexcused; the default is unexcused and in order to change a tardy to excused, students must contact the attendance clerk, Roberta Estrada in the LASA office. Similarly, teachers are unable to designate an absence as excused; in order to excuse an absence students must speak with Roberta Estrada in the LASA office. BELL-RINGERS: Every day, with the exception of test or quiz days, there will be a timed vocabulary bell-ringer. After the bell rings, you will have thirty seconds to make sure that everything is prepared, and the slideshow will begin. There will be ten slides. Each slide will hold a single definition corresponding to one of the vocabulary terms you have been previously assigned, a question related to previously learned material, or other relevant content. You will have between seconds to do each slide; usually you will have 30 seconds unless otherwise informed. You will be provided a special sheet of paper upon which to complete your bell-ringers. If you lose the sheet, you will earn a zero on the missing bell-ringers unless you come in and complete a makeup bell-ringer during office hours. Part of this assignment is learning responsibility by keeping track of the bell-ringer sheet. Bell-ringers MUST, with no exceptions, be completed in INK. Absolutely no bell-ringers written in pencil will be accepted and will result in a zero. If you are caught with a writing utensil other than that provided for grading after a bell-ringer, you will earn a zero on the bell-ringer. Two to three bell-ringers will be completed per sheet, and the sheets will be graded as a whole. You will earn between 4 and 6 bell-ringer class work grades per six weeks depending upon the way in which the dates fall that particular six weeks. The first three bell-ringers will be considered practice and not count for a grade. Once a term or concept has been addressed in class or an assignment, it is fair game for a bell-ringer for the remainder of the SCHOOL YEAR. You should keep ALL notes, tests, and other assignments and class documents in a safe place and study them regularly in order to do your very best on the bell-ringers. There is to be no talking or communication of any kind during bell-ringers. If you are not in your seat and ready when the time starts I will not allow you to simply come in later to make up the bell-ringer. Instead, the bellringer will be incomplete and you will earn the grade corresponding to the number of answers that were Information in this syllabus is subject to change at any time with reasonable notification. 3 correct. If you leave the bell-ringer blank, you will earn a zero. There is no time for chatting or wandering around the room aimlessly. You must sit down, get out your bell-ringer sheet and pen, and be ready to work! Students are permitted to correct bell-ringer scores up to a 70% for the overall assignment by writing the definition for each missed word five times. Such bell-ringer corrections must be turned in by the day of the test for the unit in which the bell-ringer was completed. For example, corrections for a bell-ringer taken during unit 2 must be taken by the day of the unit 2 test. HOMEWORK: Students will bring work from home to class as such assignments were given, indicated, or described in class or on the course webpage. Due dates will be indicated in class or on the course webpage. Any electronic assignments will be completed per the description and will be completed by the due date indicated on the course webpage or in class. All homework assignments are to be turned immediately following the grading of the bell-ringers unless I inform you otherwise or they are due electronically. Homework assignments will vary in form and function and will include pre-lab assignments that will be necessary to perform well on the lab in class. At times, reliable internet access will be required to complete homework assignments. Please notify your teacher if you do not have reliable internet access. Assignments and tests can be made up without penalty after an absence. One school day will be given for every day missed plus one extra day to complete the assignments missed after an absence. If assignments are not turned in within the allotted time, the work will be considered late and the following late policy will be applied. Students who submit late work will receive a maximum of a 70 on the assignment if it is submitted within 3 consecutive school days after the assignment was due. If the assignment is turned in after 3 school days, no credit will be given. IF YOU ARE ABSENT, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO OBTAIN ANY MISSING MATERIAL(S) / INFORMATION. I will not hunt you down or let you know what you missed. All course materials and due dates are posted on the course website; you should be able to determine what you missed and what you need to make up prior to even returning to school. If you know that you are going to be absent in advance, it makes life easier for both teacher and student if you inform the teacher prior to your absence and turn in work due while you will be gone prior to missing class. Please write ABSENT on any makeup work or the work will be counted late. BINDER CHECKS: Every six weeks you will have at least one binder check to make sure that you are maintaining a binder with the proper sections and including ALL of your biology work in the binder in an organized fashion. This will count as a classwork grade. Binder checks take place on test days. You will be given a rubric that identifies the grading standards for the binder every six weeks. You will be required to find approximately 5 assignments in your binder for grading. You will be provided a set number of minutes to find the assignments so be sure your binder is well organized before class. The assignments required may vary from class to class. If you are missing any of the five assignments, you will not receive credit for the missing assignment(s). These assignments will not be announced prior to the binder grading so be sure that you are saving all papers from biology class! If you are absent, be sure to collect the make-up work and complete it even if it is not for a grade to avoid penalty on your binder check grade! You are responsible for all assignments on the binder check even if you were absent; be sure to make up any assignments even if they were not turned in for a grade! 4 TESTS AND QUIZZES: Students will be informed of test and quiz dates in advance. However, these dates are subject to change with reasonable notice. Students will be provided with study guide for every unit to assist in preparing for exams and quizzes. However, any material presented in the unit lecture PowerPoint may appear on the test. As such, students should always download the PowerPoints and ensure that they also read the comments section on each slide which may contain information required for the assessments. Additionally, students are responsible for content from all class assignments, videos, class activities, labs, homework assignments, and reading assignments even if the material is not discussed on the study guide. No cheating or academic dishonesty is tolerated on tests and exams; students are not permitted to have cellular telephones or other electronic devices with them on in their clothing during an exam; devices must be in bags on the side of the room or checked in to the teacher during tests and exams. Any student caught with a phone or electronic device during an exam will automatically earn a zero even if the device was not being used to assist the student on the exam. There will be one test every six weeks. Generally, tests will consist of 32 multiple choice questions and 3 grid-in questions in 45 minutes and 1 long and 3 short FRQ questions in 45 minutes. However, tests may have to deviate slightly from this format to accommodate differences in schedules. Both the multiple choice portion and the FRQ portion will count as separate grades in the test category and will be weighted equally. Students will be given one day for every day missed plus one extra day to complete tests. If you have not made up the test or made arrangements with your teacher in this time frame, you will earn a zero on the test. In order to earn a grade other than a zero, you will instead have to instead take the re-take test for a maximum grade of a 70%. Students who fail multiple choice exams are permitted to retake the exam to earn credit on missed questions up to a 70%. In order to retake the exam, students must first complete corrections. Some class time will be provided to begin corrections. In order finish corrections, students should come in during office hours or any other time agreed upon by teacher and student. For multiple choice questions, students must write out the incorrect answer they chose and explain why it is wrong, then they should figure out the correct answer and explain why it is correct using the form provided in class. The exam must be retaken within five school days of the day the failing grade was received. The retake exam will be all short answer with approximately 10 questions. Students will NOT be permitted to retake the exam until corrections have been completed! If a student attempts to come in the last day to retake the test and he or she has not already completed corrections, the student will have missed the opportunity to retake the test because he or she did not follow instructions. Students who fail FRQ exams should re-write the FRQ well enough to earn at least 90% of the points available on the FRQs. This should be done out of class. Within five school days of receiving the failed FRQ grade students should come in to take the retake test. This is the same 10 short-answer question test as the multiple choice retake; if students fail both components of the exam they only need to do the retake once and the same score will be used for both portions. If students only fail the FRQ portion, they may choose 5 of the 10 short answer questions rather than completing the entire short answer exam. Students are allowed to make up failed quiz grades for up to a 70% by completing corrections on missed questions as follows: students must write out the incorrect answer they chose and explain why it is wrong, then they should figure out the correct answer and explain why it is correct.
