2 Introduction The Annual Report for 2017 is provided to the community of Nyngan Public School as an account of the school's operations and achievements throughout the year. It provides a detailed account of the progress the school has made to provide high quality educational opportunities for all students, as set out in the school plan. It outlines the findings from self assessment that reflect the impact of key school strategies for improved learning and the benefit to all students from the expenditure of resources, including equity funding. Kylee Pearce Principal School contact details Nyngan Public School 60 Cathundril St Nyngan, nyngan-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au Message from the Principal Nyngan Public School continued the Positive Behaviour for Learning program in 2017 whilst introducing Kids Matter. Staff initiated a reward system for Safe, Respectful and Cooperative lining up with the Positive Behaviour for Learning mascot, Bango being awarded to the class with the most 'Line Legend' points at the end of the week. Staff at Nyngan Public School continued to train in Literacy, Language and Learning. This program supports Early Stage One and Stage One learning. Mrs Cristene Bartley was employed to support the Early Action for Success philosophy across Years three to six. Mrs Shone and Mrs Bartley lead staff mentoring K 6 with staff attending regular mentoring sessions and being provided opportunity for peer collaboration. Miss Williamson and Mr Knight began training in Kids Matter with Nyngan Public commencing this program mid year. Mr Knight initiated The Shed as a lunch activity. The Parents and Citizens met twice a term, ran the Nyngan Show kiosk and re introduced the Easter fete. This was a successful event with many community members and visitors to town sharing in the fun of the evening. The Aboriginal Education Consultative Group met twice a term. Staff worked with the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group and community to coordinate a week of National Aboriginal and Islander Day of Celebration activities across the community, across the week. 3 Message from the school community AECG Annual School Report The Aboriginal Education Consultative Group has a transparent partnership with the Nyngan Public School. Our aim is to guide and provide assistance with Aboriginal Education and strengthen that partnership with the wider community. NAIDOC week was a whole week of celebration of Aboriginal Culture. All students were provided with opportunities to dance with our Aboriginal Dancer, Tyrone Gordon and engage in creating Aboriginal Artwork with a very talented local Aboriginal artist, Priscilla Lord. A variety of activities were organised and the students were all actively engaged. Principal reports are delivered at each AECG meeting, which are held Week 4 and week 8 of each term. Principals are able to have an open conversation at these meetings and ask for support for endorsements that may be required. Our AECG is always trying to improve Aboriginal education outcomes for schools and to ensure Aboriginal education is embedded in all areas of the curriculum and is featured throughout teachers' class programs. It lays the foundation for the students to build knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for their culturally diverse society and strengthen their identity. All children are encouraged to be proud of their culture and show respect and acceptance of the diversity of other cultures. The AECG is a conduit between Aboriginal families and the Educational providers, we ensure that our childrens learning outcomes are achieved and that our children are able to access the crème da la crème education. 4 School background School vision statement At Nyngan Public School we believe in assisting students in their search for knowledge within an environment that is safe, respectful, cooperative and rich with learning opportunities. School context Nyngan Public School, located in the Bogan Shire, provides individualised educational opportunities for the students currently enrolled. Located 165 kilometres west of Dubbo with a strong history in farming and agriculture. Families rely on employment from local business, the mining industry and a more recently established Solar Plant. The school maintains a culture which is based upon continuous improvement and quality service. Nyngan Public School is an Early Action for Success School with additional staff and resources being made available in order to support learning K 2. Nyngan Public School has a partnership agreement with the AECG, supporting the 53% Aboriginal student enrolment in the delivery of accurate cultural experience and sharing such with students from other cultural backgrounds. Nyngan Public School continues to implement Reading Recovery, Speech, Language and Hearing and L3. Self-assessment and school achievement Self-assessment using the School Excellence Framework This section of the Annual Report outlines the findings from self assessment using the School Excellence Framework, school achievements and the next steps to be pursued. This year, our school undertook self assessment using the School Excellence Framework. The framework supports public schools throughout NSW in the pursuit of excellence by providing a clear description of high quality practice across the three domains of Learning, Teaching and Leading. Throughout 2017 staff continued to build knowledge of student ability and need through regular data collection. Nyngan Public School continued to implement Early Arithmetic Strategy groups whilst initiating Whole School Reading. Both programs support staff goals to continue to build a school culture which is strongly focused on student learning needs. The implementation of Positive behaviour for Learning and Kids matter gave focus to student well being, resulting in improved student engagement. Three staff at Nyngan Public School achieved accreditation at a proficient level in Early Stage One and Stage One staff continued with Literacy, Language and Learning training whilst Stage Two and Three staff commenced Focus on Reading training. Continued teacher training continues to enhance the teaching and learning programs available at Nyngan Public School. Teacher mentoring and staff collaboration opportunities were made available to all staff throughout The leadership team at Nyngan Public School comprised of the Principal, Relieving Assistant Principal and an Instructional Leader. The leadership team worked collaboratively to support staff training and wellbeing and student engagement. Staff met on a regular basis to analyse student learning needs and support the implementation of differentiated programs that catered to such need. The leadership team supported teaching and School Administration Support Staff through the Professional Development Plan process. Our self assessment process will assist the school to refine our school plan, leading to further improvements in the delivery of education to our students. 5 Strategic Direction 1 Develop a quality teaching and learning culture driven by assessment evidence in line with the Australian Curriculum Purpose To provide a high standard of education to support data driven strategies, improve teaching and learning programs and pedagogical practises inspiring every teacher and student to excel in Literacy and Numeracy. To ensure that learning for students across our school is based on quality educational delivery and consistent, high standard and shared professional practices. Overall summary of progress Staff worked collaboratively through mentoring sessions to review student data and the teaching and learning being implemented to enhance each students ability to perform their best. Individualised mentoring sessions and group collaboration sessions supported staff to develop professionally and work toward achieving their personal goals at outline in their professional development plan. Progress towards achieving improvement measures Improvement measures (to be achieved over 3 years) Reduce the number of students not obtaining proficiency in the NAPLAN testing process. Achievement in literacy and numeracy goals will be met and growth tracked using the continuum. Common assessment tasks for data analysis and future planning with regards to pedagogy and programming in literacy and numeracy. Assessment data was analysed. Students continued to use specialised support programs with great enthusiasm. Development of in school mathematics assessment collection activity. Data collection and review K 3 as part of Early Action for Success commitment. Extension of this process to include primary classes. Next Steps Staff will continue to train in Literacy, Language and Learning. Funding will be attributed to continuing the extension of this pedagogy across the primary years. 6 Strategic Direction 2 Promote positive culture and values Purpose To work across the school community to embed a positive culture and set of values based on the three expectations of being safe, respectful and cooperative school community members. Using Positive Behaviour for Learning to achieve a culture where success is valued and a strong social conscience is developed. Overall summary of progress Positive Behaviour for Learning progressed in 2017 with the addition of signage and the introduction of Kids Matter. Nyngan Public School had a new External Coach who supported the Internal Coach and the Positive Behaviour for Learning team. Staff, parents and students consulted four times per term to support the implementation of the program. Progress towards achieving improvement measures Improvement measures (to be achieved over 3 years) Funds Expended (Resources) Progress achieved this year Students demonstrate improved cooperation on the playground resulting in a reduction in the number of students receiving negative playground entries on millennium. Update Nyngan Public School Anti racism policy $15000 A reduction in the number of playground Millennium reports resulted in less staff being required on duty. As a result additional lunch time activities such as gardening, the shed, gymnastics and choir were made available to students. $1250 A staff member took part in Anti racism Contact Officer training. Next Steps Internal coach training for a new staff member. Staff taken through Anti racism policy. Students informed of the Nyngan Public School Anti Racism policy. Purpose To build stronger, positive relationships as an educational community, inspiring a culture of collaboration, engaged communication, empowered leadership and organisational practices to encourage increased student learning outcomes Overall summary of progress In 2017 the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group and the Parents and Citizens Association met twice per term (Weeks four and eight). Parents, community and staff shared conversation regarding programs being implemented at Nyngan Public School. Parents and community attended Nyngan Public School to share celebrations such as Mothers Day, Harmony Day and Easter Hat Parade. Yarning Circle was held on two occasions. Large number of families attended the Mothers Day breakfast held in May. Literacy and Numeracy Workshops were attended by 90% of families with students attending Kinder Start Transition. Homework centre coordinated by volunteer parents and supported by staff $2000 Homework centre ran weekly for Terms Three and Four. There were only 3 students on average who attended. Next Steps Increase the number of Yarning Circles to at least one per term. Student representative Council will continue to meet weekly to coordinate two activities per term. Review of Student Engagement Policy and school shirt colour. Adapt assemblies to two per term. Nyngan Public School will continue to host celebratory events which are shared with community. Nyngan Public School has an Aboriginal Education Officer. English language proficiency $2938 Provision of release time for class teacher to source resources to support in class learning of students requiring additional English support. Low level adjustment for disability $ Speech Language and Hearing continued at Nyngan Public School with students assessed at the end of 2016 and individualised programs being devised for implementation in Additional School Learning Support Officers were employed to support learning in the classrooms. Learning and Support Teacher employed 0.7. Quality Teaching, Successful Students (QTSS) $9853 Assistant Principal was provided additional time to support instructional leadership and mentoring in the classrooms. Socio economic background $ A class teacher was employed to support the extension of the early Action for Success pedagogy across the primary years. Nyngan public School continued to implement the Positive behaviour for learning Program while introducing Kids Matter. Support for beginning teachers $ Additional release, mentoring and training opportunities were provided to a number of staff in their first year of support. Staff returning from maternity leave were supported by their second year of funding. Early Action for Success $ Instructional Leader supported Early Stage One and Stage One with data collection also from Year Three. Instructional Leader worked with additional staff member who expanded the early Action for Success pedagogy across the primary years. Literacy, language and learning training continued TEN training continued. Resources were purchased to support the program. Speech, language and Hearing $23263 Speech therapist assessed students at the end of 2016, designed individualised programs and tutored a School Learning Support Officer in the implementation of the programs. Parents were encouraged to support student attendance through regular reminders in the weekly newsletter. Teacher qualifications All teaching staff meet the professional requirements for teaching in NSW public schools. Management of non-attendance The Principal met with the Home School Liaison Officers weekly to discuss student attendance. Students with less than 85% attendance were placed on a personalised attendance plan. 10 Professional learning and teacher accreditation In 2017 staff at Nyngan Public School took part in professional training that supported Department of Education requirements, the School Plan, Professional Development Plans and the learning needs of the students. All Early Stage One and Stage One staff took part in Literacy, Language and Learning training. Positive Behaviour for Learning was supported locally by the Internal Coach. The Internal Coach completed training in Dubbo on a regular basis. Reading Recovery and Focus on Reading training continued. Two staff trained as Anti Racism Contact Officers. Staff took part in mandatory training such as anaphylaxis training, child protection, work health and safety and work place induction. CPR training took place in Term 3. Three staff completed accreditation at proficiency with two awarded their certificates and the third awaiting process completion. 12 School performance NAPLAN In the National Assessment Program, the results across the Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 literacy and numeracy assessments are reported on a scale from Band 1 to Band 10. The achievement scale represents increasing levels of skills and understandings demonstrated in these assessments. Year 3 students on average showed an increase in the number of students performing in the percentage bands of 4,5 and 6 when compared to the average. The number of year 5 students in bands 5 and 6 for writing in 2017 showed growth when compared to those in bands 5 and 6 across Page 12 of 14 Nyngan Public School 2785 (2017)

13 15% of Year 5 students achieved band 7 in NAPLAN Numeracy, 2017 whilst 35% achieved band 5. The My School website provides detailed information and data for national literacy and numeracy testing. Nyngan Public School employed an additional data collection teacher in This staff member worked across the primary classes to extend the Early Action for Success Early Stage One and Stage One data wall to include the primary years. Regular analysis of data, staff observation and anecdote resulted in students taking part in educational opportunities that differentiated curriculum and catered to individual need. This program supported the Premier's Priorities: Improving education results. Additional in class support and engaging programs were made available to all students with a focus on support to improve Aboriginal education outcomes for students in the top two NAPLAN bands. Parent/caregiver, student, teacher satisfaction Whole School community participation remained a focus for Parents and interested community were invited to attend regular Positive Behaviour for Learning meetings with staff. Attending such provided parents and interested community the opportunity to gain greater knowledge of the program being implemented at Nyngan Public School. The implementation of Positive Behaviour for Learning was also a focal point for one Parents and Citizens meeting. 14 which invited community to join. Staff and students informed community on a regular basis through newsletters and the local paper. Policy requirements Aboriginal education Nyngan High School students visited on occasion to share their knowledge of the Ngiyampaa language with students in Early Stage One and Stage One. Staff consulted with community to coordinate a week of community celebration for National Aboriginal and Islander Day of Celebration. Students had the opportunity to gain a greater respect for and knowledge of culture through workshops with Tyrone Hall, Traditional Dance, the Sutherland singers, Sista Speak and an artist in residence. Two School Learning Support Officers were employed to support students across the grades whilst providing positive role models and encouraging community to school. Nyngan Public School hosted a welcome back barbeque at the start of the 2017 school year. Parents were invited to Personalised Learning Plan Meetings in Terms 1,2 and 3 of Parents unable to attend were invited to arrange an alternate meeting time or take part in a phone meeting. Multicultural and anti-racism education The school Principal continued in her role as facilitator for Anti Racism Contact Officer training. An additional staff member from Nyngan Public School took part in the training in Staff and students celebrated Harmony Day with students visiting a number of workshops specialising in one country. Each student had the opportunity to experience dance, music, food or sport from the selection of countries. Representatives from community with a variety of cultural heritage visited to share their knowledge and experience with staff and students. residence in November2016. At this time students who had taken part in the 2016 program and students commencing school in 2017 were assessed for speech, language and hearing complications. An individualised program was then developed with implementation provided by School Learning Support Officer who is trained in doing such. Early Action for Success Nyngan Public School employed an additional teacher to implement the Early Action for Success pedagogy across Stage Two and Three. The Instructional Leader continued to work with Early Stage One and Stage One staff to assess the learning needs of Early Stage One and Stage One students whilst collecting the learning data of these students and Year Three. The data Wall was extended to include all grades. Dymocks Book Bank Students in Years 3 6 continued to take part in Dymocks Book Bank with students selecting four books per year to be shared with their class and then taken home to contribute to their home library. The Shed This program was initiated mid 2017 to provide opportunity for students to assist in fixing bikes and scooters donated by community and then given to students to take home. It added to the selection of lunch time activities gardening, gymnastics, choir, coding, drumming and library. Leadership Programs Nyngan Public School provides extensive leadership opportunities through the Student Representative Council, Library Monitors, Sports Monitors, Gardening Club and The Shed. Inductions took place at the beginning of 2017 with parents joining staff to present students with their badges. National Aboriginal and Islander Day of Celebration was celebrated at Nyngan Public School with students from other educational setting within Nyngan joining Nyngan Public School students to workshop in sport, art and food that had significance to Aboriginal culture. Year 5 and 6 students took part in the Country Woman's Association, Country of study with students producing informative power points and presenting a dance to community.
