4 Remind We will be using the Remind app as a way to send class announcements and reminders via text messaging. We sent this informa[on home on Meet the Teacher night. If you have not signed up for Remind, please check with your teacher.

5 Fastt Math Fas\ Math enables students to develop math fact fluency in a 10 minute online lesson. We will be comple[ng Fas\ Math in class but we encourage your child to complete lessons at home too! Fas\ Math can be accessed from McAuliffe s home page under Academics.

6 Parent Conferences We will hold Parent Conferences shortly a^er the Beginning of the Year Assessments are completed over the next few weeks. At our conference, we will share assessment results and, together, set some goals for your child. If you feel the need for a conference at any point throughout the year, please don t hesitate to ask!

7 Homework We will have a Homework Folder that will go home on Mondays and be due on Fridays. The Homework Folder will include a math sheet, monthly reading log, and your child s spelling list with spelling prac[ce ideas. It is important that your 2 nd grader reads at least 20 minutes every night!

8 Late Work Notifications If your child does not return their homework on the day it is due, he/she will receive a late work no[fica[on form. This sheet will indicate the late work and will require a parent signature. It will need to be returned the next day along with the completed work or the child will stay a^er school that day to complete the work un[l 3:45. If your child receives 6 late work no[ces in a 9 weeks, he/she will be assigned Responsibility Academy. Responsibility Academy is held on Thursdays un[l 5pm.

9 Student Planner McAuliffe Planner 2 nd grade is a great [me to begin encouraging responsibility! Each day, your child will write down homework informa[on and any other important things to remember in his/her planner. Please check their planner every day and be sure to ini[al each night.

10 Book Reports Students will be assigned 2 book reports over the course of the school year. For each report they will give an oral presenta[on along with a wri\en report or project of their choice. These book reports will be worked on mostly during class [me.

11 Project Based Learning Your child will be involved in several Project Based Learning (PBL) ac[vi[es throughout the year. This allows for student choice, research and explora[on. All PBL ac[vi[es are done in class and over a period of [me. Check out our teacher websites for a VIDEO explana[on of PBL.

12 Responsibility Sheets *Your child s Responsibility Sheet, located in their McAuliffe folder, indicates their daily & weekly behavior and represents expecta[ons for every student. If your child disregards an expecta[on during the day, the Responsibility Sheet is marked by the teacher and sent home for parents to sign. Please sign your child s sheet every Friday. When a child receives a mark in Specials, please contact the specials teacher if you have any ques[ons.

13 Behavior Management We are big advocates of posi[ve reinforcement and praising children for their posi[ve behavior. However, consistent disrup[ve behavior will not be tolerated and will be handled as follows: *Verbal warning (The child has the chance to correct the behavior.) *Non-verbal warning ( ex. STOP sign placed on desk as a reminder) *1st clip change: Child moves their clip and has to sit out/walk for 10 minutes of their recess [me or have Reflec[ve Lunch for 10 minutes. *2 nd clip change: The child moves their clip again and has to sit out/ walk for 20 minutes at recess or have Reflec[ve Lunch for 20 minutes. *3rd clip change: Phone call to parents and student fills out a Behavior Reflec[on sheet *4 th clip change: Student is sent to the office Each teacher has their own behavior management plan tailored to her own class. Please check with your teacher if you have any questions.

14 Behavior Management, cont. Major behavior incidents (violence, outright disrespect, inappropriate language, vandalizing school property etc.) will be handled immediately without any warnings given and parents will be contacted. Each child is expected to be on his/her best behavior outside of the classroom as well, including hallways, lunch/recess, Specials, etc. Please help encourage your child to be an outstanding ci[zen around the clock!

15 Responsibility Sheet Celebration On the last Friday of each nine weeks, we will have a Responsibility Sheet Celebra[on to reward good behavior. If your child receives 6 marks or less in a nine week period, they will be invited to the celebra[on. The Responsibility Sheet Celebra[on may be different each nine weeks and is a lot of fun!!

16 Classroom Snacks Please only send snacks that do not need utensils. This makes it hard for your student to eat while working. No messy or s[cky snacks Cut fresh fruit so that it will be easy to eat Healthy snacks are best crackers, dry cereal, fruit snacks, granola bars, etc. Please only send 1 snack per day. ALSO, please send a water bo\le with a sports top to prevent spills in the classroom.

17 Earbuds or Headphones Each 2 nd grader will need to bring in their own pair of earbuds or headphones to use with our class Macbooks, ChromeBooks and ipads. They will be stored in the classroom. THANK YOU!!

18 Student Birthdays All birthday treats will be given to the class at the end of the school day. Please either send in the treats with your child or leave in office for your teacher to pick up and bring to the classroom. The treats MUST be STORE BOUGHT. Make sure that you have the class count to ensure everyone gets a treat. Also, it would be great if you could send in napkins too! Due to the mess, we strongly suggest no cupcakes with icing. Thanks for your understanding! If your child has an allergy, please provide allergy-free treats for your child to enjoy instead of the birthday treats throughout the year. Cookies, brownies, doughnuts and muffins are super!

19 F ield Trips Students will a\end 1-2 field trips this year. We will do a walking field trip to City Hall, the Fire Department and the Police Department. The other field trip(s) will be determined throughout the school year and will correspond with our curriculum. We will need volunteers to accompany us, so watch for informa[on on our websites and in your child s McAuliffe Folder as these draw near.

20 2 nd Grade Swim & Safety Program 2 nd graders in LISD are now included in the district s Swim & Safety Program We will swim for about 1 ½ hours in the mornings on Monday-Thursday on our assigned week in November. More informa[on will be sent home closer to [me.
