1 English II Honors August 10, 2017 Volume 1, Issue Teacher information: Aimee Beske Rm: G120 Schedule: English II English II Honors abeske@stcharles.k12.la.us What you should know Teaching Philosophy: My main goal as an educator is to help your child receive a wellrounded education. While my foremost concern is English, I also try to encourage each student to grow socially, as well. We will meet each individual s needs by using a variety of activities to address different learning styles. While it is occasionally necessary to have direct instruction through lectures, the majority of class time students will Writings: participate in collaborative groups, student led discussions, and work individually so each student will become an independent learner. Classroom Expectations: In order to be successful in English II, every student is expected to use the following as exemplars: Be Prompt Be in your assigned seat with your binder. Be Prepared Bring all materials in class. Be Positive Don t give up! Be Productive Get ALL work done EVERY day! Be Polite Respect the teacher, other students, and yourself. Late Essays Ten points will be deducted each day for any late summative writing assignment. If after five days the writing assignment is still not completed and turned in, the student will receive no more than a 50 F. In-Class Timed Writings In-class timed writings will be given on a regular basis in response to a prompt, an assigned text, a cold read, or a current events issue. Any student who is absent or does NOT complete summative writings will be assigned mandatory after-school tutoring until the work is completed. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Students are required to submit their own work and cite their sources. Any student who plagiarizes as a substitute for doing his own work will receive an automatic zero for the assignment. All writings will be submitted to turnitin.com to be graded and to check for plagiarism. If it is not submitted, it will not be graded.

Students will receive the access codes in class, will set up their accounts on each of the sites, and will have access to the text books online. We will be using the following textbooks: Springboard Elements of Literature On the web USATESTPREP.com and noredink.com Students will have access to these websites which give them the ability to work on their own levels and at their own pace. Students will be required to complete specific assignments in class and out of class. The practice activities on noredink have lessons attached that will help students with any gaps in their grammar foundations. Student Led Class Discussions and Presentations: Throughout the year, students will be responsible for leading discussions and presenting to the class. Students will be required to pose questions, make comments, connect to characters and themes, and analyze texts. Typical class discussions will count as formative class grades, and summative class discussions will be held at the end of each literature Homework Homework can be expected on a regular basis and is due at the beginning of the class period. Students should place their assignments on their desks prior to the beginning of class. Edmodo & Google Drive Throughout the year, students will be responsible for posting, reading, and commenting through edmodo.com and Google Drive. Any student who abuses this forum or shows disrespect for himself or others will lose access to this forum and will be unable to complete assignments that are given in conjunction with the websites, resulting in automatic zeroes. unit. During discussions, students will be graded on the quality of their commentary as well as their speaking and listening skills (see rubric). Minor presentations will count as formative grades, and major presentations will count as summative grades. Presentation dates will be assigned, and all students will be responsible for being prepared on their assigned presentation date. Students who are not prepared to present on their assigned day will receive a zero for the presentation. Homework will NOT be accepted late. Homework is needed to complete work begun in class or in preparation for the next lesson. All homework must be legible and Vocabulary: Throughout the year, students will be responsible for teaching vocabulary words to the class. This will count as a formative grade. Students will create a presentation slide on a Google presentation. Each slide should include the student s name, vocabulary word, definition, part of speech, an example of how it is relevant to our lives, a picture that represents its relevance to our lives, and a sentence that uses the word correctly and relevantly to our lives. completed in blue or black ink or pencil. 3 3 Makeup Policy When you are absent, you are responsible for making up all work missed. I will not remind you. You are required to turn in all work and keep up with reading assignments as indicated on your weekly agenda. Please ask for clarification if there is an assignment you do not understand. When you will be out of class due to a field trip or any other excused school function, it is your responsibility to get and complete any assignments before returning to class. You are responsible for turning in all work and homework on the day you return to school. If your work is not turned in at the beginning of the class period, you will not receive credit for the assignment. Makeup Tests and Quizzes Within three days (not class periods) of returning to school from an absence, you must sign up with me to make up a test. When you sign up, you must note the specific assignments you are completing or your assignments will not be available to you to make-up. Makeup tests are given after school during English tutoring. When you have been absent, you have a short period in which to make up the missed work. See the HHS agenda for the number of days allowed. If an assignment was due the day you were absent, it is due the day you return. In class essays must be made up after school with Mrs. Beske or in the tutoring room within one week. If you do not make it up, you will receive a zero. Tests must be made up within one week. Any test that is not completed within a week s time (5 school days) will result in a zero. Unexcused absences will also result in a zero. Missed quizzes / reading check tests will be treated in one of the following ways, depending upon the purpose and length of the quiz and what we are doing in class. 1. Sometimes your quiz will be omitted, and your grade will be averaged without it. 2. Sometimes you will take the quiz on the day you return. 3. Sometimes you will have to stay after school to make up a quiz.

You may check them out from the library or purchase your own copy. English II Honors 1. Fahrenheit Things Fall Apart **An independent reading novel will be read during the 4 th quarter. Grade Policy 60% Summative: Tests, essays, discussions, presentations, projects, and research 40% Formative: Homework, discussions, quizzes, class work, etc. LEAP We have a new test at the end of this school year that will be required to move on to English III. ONLINE practice for LEAP 2025 will be done in class through diagnostic and interim tests, as well as other practice in order to provide data for weaknesses, strengths, and progress. These practice tests will count as formative grades, and students will be responsible for tracking their progress throughout the year. COURSE OBJECTIVES: To develop creative and analytical writing skills To develop knowledge and appreciation of language To analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information gathered To understand literary concepts and appreciate writers techniques To develop vocabulary through a study of prefixes and root words To use the skills and strategies of the reading and writing process for a variety of purposes To develop and present effective and responsible oral communications for a variety of audiences To read, comprehend, analyze, and respond to literature in a variety of genres for information and pleasure

5 5 Class Procedures: 1. Students will come to class prepared every day. Materials will not be provided if students are not prepared. 2. Students will demonstrate politeness and respect at all times when interacting with anyone in the classroom or in the school. 3. Students should enter the classroom, pick up binders, retrieve homework, and be seated at their desks before the bell rings. If students are not prepared and seated at their desks, students will be marked tardy. Class begins when the bell rings. No exceptions. 4. Students are NOT allowed to sit anywhere other than their assigned desks without permission. Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out. - Robert Collier 5. All school bags and personal belongings must remain underneath the desks at all times. 6. Students will not lean back in their chairs. Students who lean back in their chairs will stand. 7. Students will not put their heads down or sleep in class. Students who put their heads down or sleep in class will stand. If students continue to put their heads down or sleep, a referral will be written. 8. Anything that is on Ms. Beske s desk or podium is off limits to students unless a student has asked for and has been granted specific permission. 9. Class discussions will be conducted using standard English. Throughout these discussions, students will maintain respect for themselves and others. 10. Students will raise their hands to interact with discussion, answer, or ask questions. In order for class discussion to be beneficial to all, only one person will speak at a time. 11. Students should not ask to go to another teacher s class during class time for any reason. 12. Students will only be able to leave class for restroom purposes with their own agenda and a signed pass. If a student does not have an agenda or a pass, the student can only leave by trading a lunch detention for a pass. 13. Students should have a book in their possession at all times. If an assignment is finished early, students should immediately take out their book and begin reading.
